25th Salt Water Intrusion Meeting, 17- M. Paepen1, H. Michael2, K. Walraevens1 and T. Hermans1 1Laboratory for Applied Geology and Hydrogeology, Geology Department, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium 2Urban and Environmental Engineering, University ABSTRACT Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and saltwater intrusion (SI) seem two opposite components of the complex interaction between freshwater aquifers and the sea, but are in fact complementary processes (Taniguchi et al., 2002). SGD is of major ecological importance since it can create an important nutrient flux towards the coastal waters, but it might also be the entry gate for contaminants (e.g. Burnett et al., 2006). SI leads to the inflow of salt or brackish water into the onshore freshwater aquifers, causing a risk for the quality of exploited drinking water. The approximately 67 km long Belgian coastline along the North Sea has a complex geometry. A fragmented dune belt 100 m up to 2 km wide separates the sandy beach slope from the polder area. Rainwater infiltrates in the dune and polder areas and partly flows towards the sea as SGD. At the same time, the tides are locally responsible for the unusual presence of a salt water lens under the beach (Vandenbohede & Lebbe, 2006). In addition both SGD and SI are influenced by geological heterogeneity, making their characterization difficult. Two sites are investigated: the Westhoek area (near the Belgian-French border - characterized by a large, broad dune belt) and the area between Wenduine and Blankenberge (West of the Zeebrugge harbour - where the dune belt is relatively narrow). In order to detect zones where SGD occurs, the distribution of the fresh-/saltwater interface is mapped. -
3.1 Hard Coastal Defense
Ecolas Marine Biology ANALYSIS Chapter 2: Infrastructure in the BPNS GAUFRE: Towards a spatial structure plan for the Belgian part of the North Sea Coastal defense Figure I.2.3b: Illustrative picture of the different beach zones. 3.1 HARD COASTAL DEFENSE ECOLAS Environmental Consultancy & Assistance Bart De Wachter & Annemie Volckaert 3.1.1 Description Along the Belgian coast no natural hard substrates (rocky shores) are found. In the framework of coastal defense several artificial hard substrates have been built. Their most important function is the protection of the hinterland (dikes, groynes), the harbour (piers, moles) or the safeguarding of the shipping (buoys). Furthermore they form a substrate on which specific rocky shore communities can settle. Along the Belgian coast four main types of hard substrates can be distinguished: groynes, dikes, moles and piers. Groynes, dikes and piers are directly exposed to waves, while moles (except the breakwaters of Zeebrugge) are found within the shelter of the harbour. In contrast to dikes that are orientated practically parallel with the wave activity, groynes are placed perpendicular to the waves. Besides, groynes are on base of their morphology differentiated in a rock-fill on the seaward side, a groyne top and two flanks, all subjected to a different hydrodynamic activity. Piers ‘escort’ all a harbour gully and consist of a complex construction of differently orientated balk- or pole-structures. These structures are made of wood or concrete. A further division within the different types can be made on the basis of the following characteristics: • The degree of exposure in relation to the waves. -

Zeno, the Latest Life Nature – Restoration – Project Along the Flemish Coast
6th European Conference on Ecological Restoration Ghent, Belgium, 8-12/09/2008 ZENO, THE LATEST LIFE NATURE – RESTORATION – PROJECT ALONG THE FLEMISH COAST Dewulf E. 1, Van Nieuwenhuyse H. 1, Herrier J.-L. 1 and Lozie P. 1 1 Agency for Nature & Forests of the Flemish Ministry of Environment, Nature and Energy, West-Flanders Keywords: Restoration and management of Coastal Dunes and their transition to the Polders, NATURA 2000 habitat types: 2130 Fixed coastal dunes with herbaceous vegetation (‘grey dunes’), 2190 humid dune slacks. NATURA 2000 species: amphibians: Triturus cristatus, Hyla arborea, Epidalea calamita, birds : Egretta garzetta, Platalea leucorodia. Introduction In the federal state structure of Belgium the competence for environmental matters, including nature conservation, is bestowed to the Belgian federal authority in the territorial sea beneath the low water line and to the Flemish regional authority on land (including the tidal beaches) above the low water line. At the Flemish coast, several Natura 2000 sites have been delimited at sea as well as on land. In execution of the ‘European Birds Directive’ 49/709/EEC , 7 Special Protection Areas have been designated by different orders of the Flemish government (Map 1). In the framework of the ‘European Habitat Directive’ 92/43/EEC, already three Sites of Community Interest have been designated on land, and two areas in the Flemish territorial waters are recognised (Map 2). Map 1: Map of the Special Protection Areas in the Map 2: Map of the Special Areas for framework of the European Birds Directive 49/709/EEC Conservation in the framework of the Habitat at the Flemish coast Directive 92/438 EEC at the Flemish coast It is then obvious that ‘L’Instrument Financier Européen pour l’Environnement’, abbreviated as LIFE, more precisely LIFE nature, would play an important role as a tool for the practical implementation of the Natura 2000 – network at the Flemish coast. -
Longshore Transport and Sedimentation in a Navigation Channel at Blankenberge (Belgium)
LONGSHORE TRANSPORT AND SEDIMENTATION IN A NAVIGATION CHANNEL AT BLANKENBERGE (BELGIUM) Zimmermann, N. Trouw, K .2, Wang, L.1, Mathys, M.1, Delgado, R .3 and T. Verwaest3 Tile harbour of Blankenberge in Belgium experiences strong sedimentation in its entrance channel requiring frequent dredging, hi order to investigate under which conditions this sedimentation is the most pronounced, the instationary coastal model XBeach is used. This paper presents results of long-term morphology modelling of channel sedimentation after applying a specific methodology for input reduction. A reduced time series representative of the annual wind-wave climate is run in combination with a representative tide and a constant morphological acceleration factor (motfac) to cover one year of erosion-sedimentation. While this approach does come with side effects, it has the important advantage to be easy to implement and to preserve part of the climate history compared to other approaches such as MorMerge and a time-varying moriac approach (described in the paper). With this approach and default settings, XBeach is shown to reproduce both qualitatively and quantitatively well the measured sedimentation. Results show that tide, wind and waves all contribute significantly to the total sediment transport, and that both continuous transport and individual storm events cause strong sedimentation. Some aspects of morphological modelling methodologies are discussed, relative to the calibration, input reduction and long-term modelling methods. Keywords: morphological modelling: XBeach: input reduction: channel sedimentation : acceleration PROBLEM DEFINITION Blankenberge is located in Belgium in the Southern North Sea, 6 km West of the large port of Zeebrugge, on a stretch of sandy and gently sloping coast defended by groynes.
