  • 3.1 Hard Coastal Defense
Ecolas Marine Biology ANALYSIS Chapter 2: Infrastructure in the BPNS GAUFRE: Towards a spatial structure plan for the Belgian part of the North Sea Coastal defense Figure I.2.3b: Illustrative picture of the different beach zones. 3.1 HARD COASTAL DEFENSE ECOLAS Environmental Consultancy & Assistance Bart De Wachter & Annemie Volckaert 3.1.1 Description Along the Belgian coast no natural hard substrates (rocky shores) are found. In the framework of coastal defense several artificial hard substrates have been built. Their most important function is the protection of the hinterland (dikes, groynes), the harbour (piers, moles) or the safeguarding of the shipping (buoys). Furthermore they form a substrate on which specific rocky shore communities can settle. Along the Belgian coast four main types of hard substrates can be distinguished: groynes, dikes, moles and piers. Groynes, dikes and piers are directly exposed to waves, while moles (except the breakwaters of Zeebrugge) are found within the shelter of the harbour. In contrast to dikes that are orientated practically parallel with the wave activity, groynes are placed perpendicular to the waves. Besides, groynes are on base of their morphology differentiated in a rock-fill on the seaward side, a groyne top and two flanks, all subjected to a different hydrodynamic activity. Piers ‘escort’ all a harbour gully and consist of a complex construction of differently orientated balk- or pole-structures. These structures are made of wood or concrete. A further division within the different types can be made on the basis of the following characteristics: • The degree of exposure in relation to the waves.

  • Longshore Transport and Sedimentation in a Navigation Channel at Blankenberge (Belgium)
LONGSHORE TRANSPORT AND SEDIMENTATION IN A NAVIGATION CHANNEL AT BLANKENBERGE (BELGIUM) Zimmermann, N. Trouw, K .2, Wang, L.1, Mathys, M.1, Delgado, R .3 and T. Verwaest3 Tile harbour of Blankenberge in Belgium experiences strong sedimentation in its entrance channel requiring frequent dredging, hi order to investigate under which conditions this sedimentation is the most pronounced, the instationary coastal model XBeach is used. This paper presents results of long-term morphology modelling of channel sedimentation after applying a specific methodology for input reduction. A reduced time series representative of the annual wind-wave climate is run in combination with a representative tide and a constant morphological acceleration factor (motfac) to cover one year of erosion-sedimentation. While this approach does come with side effects, it has the important advantage to be easy to implement and to preserve part of the climate history compared to other approaches such as MorMerge and a time-varying moriac approach (described in the paper). With this approach and default settings, XBeach is shown to reproduce both qualitatively and quantitatively well the measured sedimentation. Results show that tide, wind and waves all contribute significantly to the total sediment transport, and that both continuous transport and individual storm events cause strong sedimentation. Some aspects of morphological modelling methodologies are discussed, relative to the calibration, input reduction and long-term modelling methods. Keywords: morphological modelling: XBeach: input reduction: channel sedimentation : acceleration PROBLEM DEFINITION Blankenberge is located in Belgium in the Southern North Sea, 6 km West of the large port of Zeebrugge, on a stretch of sandy and gently sloping coast defended by groynes.

BURNETl-FLETCHER PROFESSOR OF HISTORY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LONDON EDINBURGH GLASGOW NEW YORK TORONTO MELBOURNE CAPE TOWN BOMBAY HUMPHREY MILFORD 1919 f^ •NOTE The publication of Sir Eoger Keyes's Dispatches of May 9 and June 15, 1918, at length affords an authentic record, by its organizer and leader, of an achievement which a French Admiral has characterized as ' the finest feat ot arms in the naval history of all times and all countries '. As a story of pure gallantry, it may be, the Dispatches do not add to the information already accessible. But they correct many glaring current inaccuracies, based on irre- sponsible statements and incomplete knowledge. Above all, they present us for the first time with an authentic exposition of the purpose and tactics of the operations, and permit us to view their incidents in proper perspective. For the first time, too, we realize the magnitude of the design, its colossal intricacy, its patient weaving. Narratives of both Raids were issued through the Press Bureau on April 26 and May 15, 1918. Having regard to their medium of publication, but on that' ground alone, these articles, written by an exceedingly competent and well-informed journalist, may be described as official.

The majority of the Belgian AAS have established self-sustaining populations, although for some species the establishment is uncertain or in need of verification. Prime introduction vectors are shipping, including small recreational craft, and aquaculture. Most AAS originate from the temperate northwest Pacific. The invasion rate has been increasing during the last two decades. Key words: Belgium, aquatic species introductions, shipping, aquaculture Introduction some recognized cryptogenics. In our list we opted for a rather conservative approach, i.e. we Worldwide, many species have successfully did not attempt to prepare an exhaustive list of colonised new habitats as an ongoing all species of non-native origin that have ever phenomenon. Coastal waters are heavily exposed been recorded in Belgian marine waters, whether to introductions of alien species as a result of the established or not.
