“To Fight the Battles We Never Could”: The Militarization of Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes by Brett Pardy B.A., The University of the Fraser Valley, 2013 Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the School of Communication Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology Brett Pardy 2016 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Summer 2016 Approval Name: Brett Pardy Degree: Master of Arts Title: “To Fight the Battles We Never Could”: The Militarization of Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes Examining Committee: Chair: Frederik Lesage Assistant Professor Zoë Druick Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Adel Iskander Supervisor Assistant Professor Michael Ma External Examiner Faculty Member Department of Criminology Kwantlen Polytechnic University Date Defended/Approved: June 16, 2016 ii Abstract The Marvel comics film adaptations have been some of the most successful Hollywood products of the post 9/11 period, bringing formerly obscure cultural texts into the mainstream. Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that a hegemonic American model of militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2012), and demonstrate the significant reorientation of the film franchise towards the American military’s “War on Terror”. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful.

  • The Confusion of Conditions a Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.*
The Confusion of Conditions A Sociological Look at the Television Series E.R.* By Sabine Chalvon-Demersay Translated from the French by Teresa Lavender Fagan E.R. is an American television series that portrays the daily activities of a medical team in the emergency room of a hospital located in Chicago. The pilot episode was broadcast on NBC in September 1994. The series was bought by France 2, which aired the first episodes in July 1996, and has presented a new season every fall. Michael Crichton created E.R. He wrote the pilot episode, which was produced by John Wells and directed by Rod Holcomb; he continues to supervise the writing of subsequent episodes which are directed by different people. A graduate of Harvard, the author of 22 best-selling books, he has a medical degree, but has never practiced medicine. It was during medical school that Crichton thought of the original screenplay for E.R., which was produced twenty years later. He needed the authority that was granted to him by the success of his books and his film scripts (notably Disclosure, Jurassic Park, Congo, Rising Sun), as well as the support of Steven Spielberg, in order to be in a position to propose an original screenplay that in many respects went against much of what people expected in a television series, and concerning which he was not willing to make any concessions. The Research What is most striking when one questions viewers of the series is their sense of a true powerful relationship that is immediately established between the series and its audience and which develops throughout the seasons: violent rejection, strong enthusiasm, disgust, expectation, impatience, frustration, irritation, habit, weariness, (relief).

  • Alumni Newsletter Treasuring Uni High!
UNIHI Education Foundation A Non-Profit Corporation Alumni Newsletter May 2003 Treasuring Uni High! Neal Rein S’66, UHEF President Several weeks ago I found myself digging through one of the large basement areas located below Uni’s administration building. I was accompanied by Judy Wolfenstein and Carolyn Lynch, both fellow Foundation Board members. Our goal was to try to locate and retrieve some of the many items that represent the history of University High School. It was an archeological expedition that rivaled that of Harold Carter as he delved into King Tut’s tomb. Although we did not locate a golden sarcophagus or any treasures from ancient Egypt, what we did discover is of great interest to all of us who attended or worked at Uni. Among the many items buried deep in dust and trash were collections of attendance records from the past several decades, boxes of outdated textbooks, student and teacher scrapbooks, long outdated supplies, some of the original brass hardware from the old doors, cabinets hand made in Save the Date! the early 20’s, a family of feral cats, and several long lost trophies covered with decades of dust. Although these items were of interest, a short time later we hit paydirt as we uncovered the full set of “blueprints” for the construction of University High school. Although these documents are in All-Alumni terrible condition, they are complete, readable, and should have been stored in a time capsule Picnic rather than on a dusty floor. and We examined these documents, some of them dating back to 1923, two years before Uni first Classic Car opened.
