A total of 32 transect counts were per- formed. Habitats sampled included sandy bottom, rocky boulders, vertical walls and rocky outcrops. Species richness, diversity, density, trophic structure, size and spatial organization were documented for the fish assemblages. Forty-four species from 23 families were encountered; 32% belonged to Sparidae (10) and Labridae (four). The greatest species richness (25) was observed in rocky boulder habitat at 10–15 m depth, while the lowest (five) occurred over a deeper sand habitat. The greatest density (760Á5 individuals per 100 m2) was recorded over rocky outcropping (20–25 m deep), and the lowest of 11Á6 individuals per 100 m2 was over a sand bottom at 10–15 m depth. Thalassoma pavo, Abudefduf luridus and Chromis limbata had higher densities on hard bottoms, while Heteroconger longissimus was the most abundant species in sand bottom habitats. -

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

E-mail: [email protected]. SUMMARY: Mycteroperca fusca is one of the main predators of the Canarian archipelago coastal marine ecosystem. Noth- ing is known on the life history or population dynamics of this predatory serranid fish. In this study, age and growth of M. fusca were investigated by annual growth increment counts from 214 fish collected between January 2004 and December 2005. A year’s growth is represented by one opaque and one translucent ring. The island grouper is a slow-growing and long-lived species, with ages up to twenty years recorded. Length at age was described by the von Bertalanffy growth -1 model (L∞=898 mm; k=0.062 year ; and t0= −3.83 year), the Schnute growth model (y1=262 mm; y2=707 mm; a=0.008; -1 and b=1.98), and the seasonalised von Bertalanffy growth model (L∞=908 mm; k=0.061 year ; t0= −3.83 year; C=2.58; and ts=0.542). A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. -

July 2015, 69 pp. 2 Executive Summary On July 15, 2013, NMFS received a petition to list 81 species of marine organisms as endangered or threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). If an ESA petition is found to present substantial scientific or commercial information that the petitioned action may be warranted, a status review shall be promptly commenced (16 U.S.C. 1533(b)(3)(A)). NMFS determined that for 27 of the 81 species, including the island grouper (Mycteroperca fusca), the petition had sufficient merit for consideration and that a status review was warranted (79 FR 10104, February 24, 2014). -

The list 24 is based on historical literature records and new revisions. The ichthyofauna list is 25 composed by 397 species very diversified in 2 superclass, 3 class, 35 orders, 139 1 1 families and 288 genus. The order Perciformes is the most diverse one with 37 families, 2 91 genus and 135 species. Gobiidae (19 species) and Sparidae (19 species) are the 3 richest families. Biogeographically, the Lusitanian group includes 203 species (51.1%), 4 followed by 149 species of the Atlantic (37.5%), then 28 of the Boreal (7.1%), and 17 5 of the African (4.3%) groups. We have recognized 41 new records, and 3 other records 6 have been identified as doubtful. -

Thirty-seven species are newly recorded to the Azores and seven are described as new to science: Byssoloma fuscum, Lecania azorica, Sphaerellothecium heterodermiae, S. parmotremae, Stigmidium micareae, S. sub- cladoniicola, Thelocarpon microsporum. Key words: biodiversity in lichens and lichenicolous fungi, ecology, Macaronesia, new re- cords, taxonomy INTRODUCTION The Azores are a group of volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 1,400 km west of the mainland of Portugal. There are 9 major islands, which have volcanic origins. Mount Pico, on the island of Pico, is the highest point in the archipelago, at 2,351 m. The islands visited for the study below, are characterised by a hilly landscape with the highest point on São Miguel, ca 1,100 m and the highest point on Terceira, ca 1,000 m. There is an existing checklist of lichens and lichenicolous fungi, which has been published online by Gabriel (2008), in which distribution of the species can be found from all over these nine islands. During October 2011 and June–July 2014 the author and his wife gathered ca 1,000 specimens on two islands, São Miguel and Ter- ceira, respectively. -

TERCEIRA ISLAND - The Lilac Island - Elliptic in shape, Terceira covers an area of 402 sq. km, is 29 km at its longest and 17.5 km at its widest. The island is a plateau, with the Serra do Cume to the east, the Serra do Labaçal in the centre (rising to 808m), and the Serra da Santa Bárbara (rising to 1,021m) to the west. Angra do Heroismo, with its origins in the late 15th century, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a picture book town of imposing townhouses and cobbled streets seemingly untouched by time. The best views of this once prosperous trading centre are from Monte Brasil across the harbour. The west coast harbours a host of villages and the wilder, with volcanic caves which are a further invitation to discover the subterranean mysteries. Natal Caves and Algar do Carvão considered a geological Nature Reserve is formed by caves of up 100 metres in depth, with majestic stalactites and stalagmites and inner lake. Praia da Vitoria, to the east, with its sandy beach is a charming small town and, inland, the views from the 500m high point of the Serra do Cume, over the gigantic quilt made up of green pastures separated by black volcanic stone walls, quite breathtaking. Terceira caters to all interests from golf, exploring volcanoes, walking, swimming in natural rock pools and visiting the sixty-eight 19th century ‘Impérios’, (small chapels of the Holy Spirit), which are scattered throughout the island. Then there are the colourful festivals and street bullfights (they pad the bulls’ horns and bulls are never killed) where the only casualty is young men’s wounded pride. -

Detailed descriptions and a key to these species are presented. The habitats in which PaAa'peAcZ5 are most commonly encountered and the pattern of species occupancy within each of these habitats are described along with seasonal patterns of abundance. The interrelationships between the morphology of the alimentary tract, the food taken, and feeding behaviour were investigated. -
Workshop for Red List Assessments of Groupers
Workshop for Global Red List Assessments of Groupers Family Serranidae; subfamily Epinephelinae FINAL REPORT April 30th, 2007 Prepared by Yvonne Sadovy Chair, Groupers & Wrasses Specialist Group The University of Hong Kong (24 pages) Introduction The groupers (Family Serranidae; Subfamily Epinephelinae) comprise about 160 species globally in the tropics and sub-tropics. Many groupers are commercially important and assessments to date on a subset of species suggest that the group might be particularly vulnerable to fishing. An assessment of all grouper species is needed to examine the sub- family as a whole and set conservation and management priorities as indicated. The Serranidae is also a priority family for the Global Marine Species Assessment. This report summarizes the outcomes of the first complete red listing assessment for groupers conducted by the Groupers and Wrasses IUCN Specialist Group (GWSG) at a workshop in Hong Kong. The Workshop for Global Red List Assessments of Groupers took place 7-11 February, 2007, at the Robert Black College of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). The 5-day workshop was designed to complete red list assessments for all grouper species. Of a total of 161 grouper species globally, only 22 are included on the IUCN Red List with a currently valid assessment; several need to be reassessed and the remaining 100+ have never been assessed. The aim of the workshop, therefore, was to assess 139 groupers to complete all 161 species. The workshop had 23 participants, including many highly respected grouper experts, coming from eleven countries (see cover photo of participants). All members of the GWSG were invited in circulation.
