I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

The first quarter has been extremely busy for us. As usual, January began with our annual Enshrinement as we honored 15 incredible individuals, three exceptional programs, presented the 16th Founder’s Award and the 13th President’s Award before nearly 1,700 people. In mid-March we hosted the 21st annual Hole-in- One High School Golf Clinic. And in late March over 800 people attended the fifth Women’s Sports Luncheon as we inducted four women’s sports leaders and two outstanding programs. We have had a full first quarter! Now we are into April with our first golf tournaments are just days away. We will host our first Celebrity Golf Classic in St. Louis at The Legends Golf Club on 2 April 23. On May 14, we will be at the Club at Porto Cima for the Lake of the Ozarks Celebrity Golf Classic. Beanballs and Baseball: Private Remedies vs. Criminal Sanctions for Violence in Baseball Kelli Amanda Metzger Knerr* I. INTRODUCTION On August 10, 2009, the tension between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers began to escalate when a pitch hit Detroit Tigers‟ first baseman Miguel Cabrera while he was at bat in the top of the fourth inning.1 The beanballs2 continued later in the game when Boston‟s third baseman Kevin Youkilis was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning and Detroit‟s Brandon Inge was hit in the top of the eighth inning.3 When the two teams met the next night, the discord boiled over.4 A pitch once again hit Cabrera, this time in the top of the first inning.5 In the bottom of the first inning, Tigers‟ pitcher Rick Porcello threw an inside pitch to the Red Sox‟ first baseman Victor Martinez.6 After nearly being hit by the pitch, Martinez “took a few menacing steps toward the * J.D. • Mobile Baseball, 1951-1962
Transcribed Pages from the Charles Dickson Papers Box 3 Folder 5: Mobile Baseball 1951-1962 356. Mobile Register April 4 – 1951 Boston Braves vs. Brooklyn Dodgers In the only major league exhibition game carded at Mobile this season, the two National League clubs waged a three-hour-and-five-minute marathon that saw 18 hits, 18 runs, three errors, and 20 free tickets to first by a battery of nine pitchers. The final result of the game was a score of 10 to 8 in favor of “Lippy” Leo Durocher’s Brooklyn Dodgers against Billy Southworth’s Boston Braves. The Mobile fans had the pleasure of seeing Eddie Stanky in action on second base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. (TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: SEVERAL INDEPENDENT SOURCES CONFIRMED THAT DUROCHER WAS NOT THE MANAGER OF THE DODGERS IN 1951; THE DODGERS WERE MANAGED BY CHUCK DRESSEN. DUROCHER WAS THEN MANAGER OF THE NEW YORK GIANTS) Clyde King King’s contract purchased from Montreal could help the Brooklyn Dodgers considerably. Clyde King is not exactly a newcomer to the Dodgers. He appeared on the team as a left- handed pitcher in 1944, 1945, and 1949, but lacked the required speed. He’s smart, though, and has control. King formerly played with the Mobile Bears. April 5 – 1951 John Hall Hall will be back with the Mobile Bears during the 1951 season after three seasons. Few fans realize that in the fall of 1947, Branch Rickey could have sold Hall for exactly $100,000. That was the offering price of the young rookie who came out of nowhere to set the Southern Assn.

Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.
