Engaging students in an online environment! Almost all students have internet, computers and mobile phones. School approach to online learning: Synchronous model: students and teachers follow existing school timetable. Initially 60 minute periods. Technology: Google Classroom, Adobe Connect, NSW DE Zoom. School laptop is Window 10 with built in webcam, Wacom tablets, headsets. Challenges for teachers Teacher digital tools and skills Need to “write maths” . Challenges for teachers Synchronous timetable Making high quality math videos Challenges for teachers Year 7 are not digital natives What we learned for Junior classes • Consistency and simplicity • A standard lesson design : watch/listen, do, submit. • Book work is still important and a key to managing work. What we learned for Senior classes • Zoom is terrific with seniors. • Can pretty much run a normal lesson. • There is one benefit : continuous work samples. New Challenges • Assessment. Exploring Google self-marking quizzes; online maths services. Three ideas • No digital pen? A graphic tablet • WACOM • XP-PEN • Synchronous model? Look after your sanity. • Junior classes : simplicity and predictability • And don’t forget the value of bookwork.
