    Understanding the Recent Phenomena of Holocaust Remembrance in the Form of National Holocaust Museums and Memorials in Belgium, France, and Germany Hannah Elizabeth Garza Universiteit van Amsterdam Graduate School of Humanities A thesis submitted for the degree of Masters in Holocaust and Genocide Studies Spring 2017 !1 Abstract This thesis will focus on national Holocaust museums and memorials in Europe, in specific regards to the national Holocaust museums of Belgium and France, and the national Holocaust memorial of Germany. This dissertation will begin with a brief overview of the scholars used within each chapter, along with a discussion on the development of national Holocaust museums in Europe in the introduction chapter. Following the introduction, the first chapter will discuss the Kazerne Dossin Memorial Museum in Mechelen, Belgium. Chapter two will then cover the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris, France. Finally, chapter three will then focus on the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in conjunction with its underground information center in Berlin, Germany. This thesis will endeavor to explore the themes represented in each museum in relation to German compliance, and the role of the bystanders from each Nation. The goal is to understand how each of these national institutions discussed within the text, portray their involvement in the events of the Holocaust and Second World War by way of State compliance and the actions of their bystanders. When I received an invitation from SAA to the final of the World Cup Rugby at Ellis Park, I was really not sure if it was worth travelling 16 hours to see a I 1/2 hour match that I could probably see much better in my own living room!!! Luckily my gut feeling got the better of me, I suppose, and Tm now in the plane on my way home after participating in a "Great Historical" sports event. Only by being there could one really feel the fantastic atmosphere and experience what the New South Africa really means." The excitement could be felt throughout the city with thousands of fans making their way to the ground all dressed up in crazy hats carrying flags of all sizes (only the New South African flag of course!). There were stands on street corners "painting" the new flag on people's faces, and, of course, folks gathered around their traditional "Braaivleis" drinking and smiling. Inside the ground the 70,000 crowd were wildly excited as they greeted the two teams who took to the field. To hear 70,000 people shouting "Nelson, Nelson" as that great man entered what was formerly the bastion and stronghold of white South African supremacy, is a moment never to be forgotten.

    Jewish Communal Affairs American Jews and the Middle East ISRAEL, IRAN, IRAQ In December 2006, AJC issued a pamphlet, 'Progressive' Jewish Thought and the New Anti-Semitism, by Prof. Alvin Rosenfeld of Indi- ana University, which pointed to specific examples of left-of-center Jew- ish critics of Israel who went so far as to question the right of the Jewish state to exist, a position that Rosenfeld considered anti-Semitic. Few knew of the publication until an article about it appeared in the New York Times on January 31, 2007, and then it became a focus of public dispute. A number of discrete issues were debated back and forth, such as in- accuracies in the Times characterization of AJC and of Rosenfeld's the- sis, whether Rosenfeld had erred in lumping together friendly critics of Israel with virulent foes, and whether, as some critics alleged, his real agenda was to push an alleged Jewish neoconservative alliance with the Bush administration and Christian conservatives in support of the Iraq war. The most serious charge was that 'Progressive' Jewish Thought was meant to censor all liberal criticism of Israel by tarnishing it with the label of anti-Semitism. Rosenfeld countered that he could not see how point- ing out the anti-Semitic implications of those who wanted Israel dis- mantled amounted to censorship, and suggested that those making the charge were themselves engaging in censorship by seeking to silence Is- rael's defenders. As 2007 began American Jewish groups were focused on a potentially nuclear Iran whose president made no secret of his intention to destroy Israel.

    War and Pride: “Out Against the Occupation” and Queer Responses to the 2006 Lebanon War Natalie Kouri-Towe Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Studies © Natalie Kouri-Towe 2008 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine the role of queerness, solidarity and movement in anti-war activism relating to the 2006 Lebanon War. I investigate two events called “Out Against the Occupation” that were organized during the summer of 2006 in response to the war. These events emerged as a queer response to the context of various gay pride events held throughout the war that failed to develop an anti-war response to the war in Lebanon. These gay pride events include the Divers/Cité festival held annually in Montreal, the first World OutGames held in Montreal, the World Pride events held in Jerusalem and the Queeruption gathering held in Tel Aviv. I argue that we must rethink the role of movement, queerness and solidarity in order to understand how movements of resistance emerge. I do so by examining the role of subjectivity in how we come to move and orient ourselves towards others. Next, we visit the Palmach Museum, where we “join up” with the paramilitary forces from Israel’s pre-statehood days. Discover the secret underground ammunition factory that played a pivotal role in Israel’s fight for independence at the Ayalon Institute. This afternoon, we walk through the Neve Tzedek neighborhood, one of the first neighborhoods in the Israel, now home to many artist studios and galleries. This evening marks the beginning of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day. We will meet with an IDF war veteran to hear their story. Dinner together this evening at our hotel. Following dinner, we walk over for “Shirim BaKikar” at Rabin Square, joining the people of Tel Aviv in solemn song and remembrance.
