Entre estas pa­ rece haver fatos incontestáveis ao lado de fraudes inúmeras e inegáveis. Como distin­ guir uns dos outros? Como discernir a reali­ dade da fraude? O meio seguro que nos assiste para conhecermos a verdade c distinguirmo-la da fraude, da ilusão e do erro, é a nossa ra­ zão. Pela razão iios distanciamos dos ani­ mais. Nós não conhecemos a verdade inlul- tivaniente. Intuitivamente apenas percebe­ mos os primeiros princípios universais e. des­ tes nos servimos para chegarmos ao alcance das verdades mediatas. Os nossos sentidos lambem são meios que nos levam à posse da verdade, mas eles não nos proporcionam logo plena certeza da objetividade daquilo que percebemos por meio deles. Apreendem e transmitem sim­ plesmente as primeiras impressões do que acontece fora e dentro de nós, impressões es­ sas que devemos sujeitar ao exame da razão para apurar-lhes o conteúdo de verdade, de falsidade ou de ilusão. Seria insuficiente e superficial estudar o Espiritismo somente À LUZ DOS FATOS. O físico que procede cientificamente não se — 10 — contenta com os contornos e as aparências dos fatos. Procura descobrir a causa intima e até as leis que dirigem a produção dos fe­ nômenos que se lhe oferecem ao exame. Com esta análise chega a estabelecer a realidade dlos fatos físicos. Semelhantemente, temos de proceder com respeito ao Espiritismo. Para não ser­ mos taxados de superficiais e incienlificos, in­ cumbe-nos indagar qual a natureza intima dos fenômenos espiritas, qual a causa que os pro­ duz, e, consequentemente, indagar se êles acreditam ou não as MENSAGENS que o Es­ piritismo oferece a seus crentes. E’ só pelo raciocínio que conseguimos apurar a verda- (io a esse respeito. Eis ai o terreno firme, porque neutro, em o qual só é possível aceitarem-se discus­ sões sobre o Espiritismo; é o único terreno em que podemos terçar armas com espiritas para apurarmos a natureza e a objetividade dos fenômenos e mensagens. Verificando o absoluto acordo dos fatos espiritas com essas primeiras verdades, conseguiremos concluir para a realidade deles e afirmar a sua ínti­ ma natureza. A própria ciência exige conhecimento das coisas pelas causas. Onde não há conhecimen­ to das causas íntimas, onde só se consideram os fenômenos externos, não há ciência. Querendo, pois, tratar do Espiritismo cientificamente, escolhemos para este livro um titulo que mais correspondesse à nossa finalidade:"O ESPIRITISMO À LUZ DA RA­ ZÃO," De-fato, pretendemos examinar, den- — 11 — tro desta oficina das ciências, os dados do ESPIRITISMO. Atirá-los-emos para dentro do cadinho da razão e os iremos distribuin­ do em secções logicamente concatenadas. Só assim esperamos restabelecer a verdade. Só assim esperamos evitar a imensa confusão a que os espiritas arrastam os seus adver­ sários. Não será imodéstia nossa se afirmarmos que o nosso esforço representa um progres­ so na literatura anti-espirita em lingua por­ tuguesa. Geralmente, os autores que nos pre­ cederam fizeram obra de polêmica; e é sabi­ do que as polêmicas nunca obedecem a um plano preestabelecido, -porque, em regra, um contendor atrai o outro para terreno impre­ visto. Alem disso, os nossos predecessores tra­ çaram-se um programa restrito: ou o estu­ do cientifico de uma só parte do problema espirita, ou um estudo geral, mas sem feição cientifica. E assim, no primeiro caso, estu­ dam apenas um lado da questão, — ou os fenômenos, ou as mensagens, ou as causas, ou as consequências, ou a teoria. E, no segundo caso, escrevem livros despidos de aparato científico, sem notas, sem citações autoriza­ das, e, não raro, recheados de anedotas inve- rídicas c de histórias insulsas. Procurando evitar todos os escolhos, to­ mamos ainda o ensejo de ensinar a doutrina católica nos pontos em que ela é negada ou controvertida pelos espiritas. Assim, não nos contentamos em refutar o erro espirita: fornecemos armas para a defesa do catecis­ — 12 — mo e demonstração do dogma católico. De ver que a Sagrada Escritura, neste particular, é o nosso maior arsenal de provas. Sobretudo, estendemo-nos na refutação dos érros mais disseminados e, para sermos completos, nos valemos da Bíblia, assim co­ mo da Filosofia. Deste modo, aí ficam três categorias de argumentos: teológicos, filosó­ ficos e populares, estes tomados de emprésti­ mo à lógica natural, ao bom senso. Isto, de acordo com as várias categorias de leitores que nos lerem a obra. Sc tivermos conseguido estabelecer a verdadeira origem dos fenômenos; se tiver­ mos reduzido a seus justos limites o valor das mensagens; se tivermos mostrado os desas­ trados efeitos do Espiritismo, julgamos ter al­ cançado o nosso escopo: glória de Deus, ser­ viço do Brasil, préstimo à sociedade. Tudo isso pelo êxito, maior ou menor, com que ti­ vermos afastado do perigo espirita

A particularly useful one, and the focus of the present article, is Nandor Fodor’s Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science (Fodor, n.d., circa 1933 or 1934). The encyclopedia has more than 900 alphabetically arranged entries. These cover such phenomena as apparitions, auras, automatic writing, clairvoyance, hauntings, materialization, poltergeists, premoni- tions, psychometry, and telepathy, but also mediums and psychics, re- searchers and writers, magazines and journals, organizations, theoretical ideas, and other topics. In addition to the content of this work, and some information about its author, it is argued that the Encyclopaedia is a good reference work for the study of developments from before 1933, even though it has some omissions and bibliographical problems. Widely used by writers interested in overviews of the literature, Fodor’s work is part of a reference literature developed over the years to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge about the early publications of the field by students of psychic phenomena.

In recent times the source of interest in psychical research in Germany has been subject of relevant studies. Not infrequently these works have dealt with this phenomenon through the interpretation of the various steps and transformations present in Hans Driesch’s thought, from biology and medicine to neovital- ism, and finally to parapsychology. However these studies identified the causes of this growing involvement in paranormal research either in the historical context of “crisis” of modernity (or “crisis” in psychology), or in an attempt to “normalize” the supernatural as an alternative to the traditional experimental psychology. My paper aims instead at throwing light on the constant effort by Driesch to conceive (and found) psychical re- search as a science of the super-normal, using the methodology successfully adopted by the scientific community (especially German) in the late nineteenth century. Moll’s analysis concluded that parapsychologists vouching for the reality of supernormal phenomena, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis and materialisations, suffered from a morbid will to believe, which paralysed their critical faculties and made them cover obvious mediumistic fraud. Using Moll’s treatment of Schrenck-Notzing as an historical case study of boundary disputes in science and medicine, this essay traces the career of Schrenck-Notzing as a researcher in hypnotism, sexology and parapsychology; discusses the relationship between Moll and Schrenck-Notzing; and problematises the pathologisation and defamation strategies of deviant epistemologies by authors such as Moll. SCHWARTZ The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona Abstract—Mediums claim to be able to report accurate and specific information about the deceased loved ones (termed discarnates) of living people (termed sitters) even without any prior knowledge about the sitters or the discarnates and in the complete absence of any sensory feedback. Despite recent experimental research investigating this phenomenon (e.g., Beischel & Schwartz, 2007a), no systematic qualitative studies have been conducted. Consequently, eight research mediums were asked to describe in as much detail as possible how they personally experience receiving communication from a discarnate, as part of a comprehensive nine-step subject screening procedure. Thematic analysis revealed seven comprehensive constituent themes that were used to formulate a fundamental structural definition. Keywords: research mediums—discarnate communication—phenomenology— thematic analysis Introduction A growing public interest in the phenomenon of mediumship is clearly evident in the current rise of this topic in various aspects of popular culture. Numerous books, television shows, and movies featuring mediums—those who experience regular communication with the deceased—have moved from the obscure realm of the occult to the recognizable mainstream. The conventional scientific community has only just begun to recognize mediumship as a topic worth investigating when, in fact, the scientific study of mediums is over a century old.
