Spring 2012 Prof. Jochen Hellbeck [email protected] Van Dyck Hall 002F Office hours: M 3:30-5:00 and by appointment History 510:375 -- 20 th Century Russia (M/W 6:10-7:30 CA A4) The history of 20 th century Russia, as well as the world, was decisively shaped by the Revolution of 1917 and the Soviet experiment. For much of the century the Soviet Union represented the alternative to the West. When the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917 they were committed to remake the country and its people according to their socialist vision. This course explores the effects of the Soviet project—rapid modernization and ideological transformation—on a largely agrarian, “backward” society. We will consider the hopes and ideals generated by the search for a new and better world, and we will address the violence and devastation caused by the pursuit of utopian politics. Later parts of the course will trace the gradual erosion of Communist ideology in the wake of Stalin's death and follow the regime’s crisis until the spectacular breakup of the empire in 1991. Throughout the course, we will emphasize how the revolution was experienced by a range of people – Russians and non-Russians; men and women; artists and intellectuals, but also workers, soldiers, and peasants – and what it meant for them to live in the Soviet system in its different phases. To convey this perspective, the reading material includes a wide selection of personal accounts, fiction, artwork, films, which will be complemented by scholarly analyses. Exploring works by Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Faddei Bulgarin, I view tropes such as spending, counterfeiting, hoarding, and gambling, as well as plots of mad or blocked ambition, in relation to the cultural and economic history of Nicholas I’s reign and in the context of the importation of economic discourse and literary conventions from abroad. Furthermore, I consider the impact of culturally and economically conditioned affects—ambition, avarice, and embarrassment—on narrative tone. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) BLACK EUROPEANS: A British Library Online Gallery feature by guest curator Mike Phillips Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was the son of Marquis Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, and a slave, Louise-Céssette Dumas, from the Caribbean island colony of Saint Domingue (or Santo Domingo, known as Haiti after 1804). Returning to France in 1780, De La Pailleterie consented to his son joining the army on condition that he did not use his name. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas’ courage and strength became legendary and by 1793 he was a general at 31. Following a successful campaign with Napoleon in Egypt, Dumas seemed set for a brilliant future but, because of his involvement in a republican plot, he was despatched to France, captured during the journey and imprisoned. Freed after 20 months, he was lame, deaf in one ear, partly paralysed and penniless. At the age of 35 he was obliged to retire to Villers-Cotterêts, a quiet village near Paris where he had married Marie-Louise Elizabeth Labouret in 1792. Alexandre was born on 24 July 1802. Madame Dumas was in raptures because of his fair skin and blue eyes. A few days before she had seen a puppet show with a black devil called Berlick, and she had been terrified at the prospect of giving birth to a Berlick. Alexandre adored his father, who died in 1806. Told that his father been taken away by God the four-year-old Dumas angrily declared his intention of going up to heaven and demanding satisfaction. In adult life he was to fictionalise many of his father’s real life exploits in his famous novel The Three Musketeers. -

Chapter One Born in the Crucible of War Chapaev and His Socialist Realist Comrades In life there is always a place for feats. Геройство—это значит совершить невозможное. -Fyodor Gladkov When Maxim Gorky published his novel Mother in 1906, it became a proto- type for future socialist realist novels. Over a quarter of a century later, when in 1934 the method of socialist realist writing was codifi ed, Mother was listed as an offi cially approved exemplar. Sitting at an estate in the Adirondacks,1 Gorky had written the novel in the wake of devastating events in Russia: the humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and the convulsions of the 1905 revolution that failed to bring the tsarist state down. Th is must have seemed to Gorky like a “plastic juncture,” to use John Dewey’s term, though that assessment turned out to be premature. His novel Mother was in its own way a war novel that confronted the working class problems of Russia and heralded the coming Revolutions. Aft er a brief discussion of Mother, we look in this chapter at two of its progeny, two of the most signifi cant novels to emerge in the immediate aft er- math of the Revolution and Civil War. Marcelline Hutton Resilient Russian Women in the 1920s & 1930s The stories of Russian educated women, peasants, prisoners, workers, wives, and mothers of the 1920s and 1930s show how work, marriage, family, religion, and even patriotism helped sustain them during harsh times. The Russian Revolution launched an economic and social upheaval that released peasant women from the control of traditional extended fam- ilies. It promised urban women equality and created opportunities for employment and higher education. Yet, the revolution did little to elim- inate Russian patriarchal culture, which continued to undermine wom- en’s social, sexual, economic, and political conditions. Divorce and abor- tion became more widespread, but birth control remained limited, and sexual liberation meant greater freedom for men than for women. The transformations that women needed to gain true equality were post- poned by the pov erty of the new state and the political agendas of lead- ers like Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. -

Patera, my advisor, without whose guidance this work would not have been begun. ABSTRACT A number of crities have observed that there is no tradition of women's writing in Russian. The writings of Lydia Chukovskaya. 1. Grekova and Tatiana Tolstaya - the principle subjects of the present work - partially contradict this perception. and defy the restrictions imposed by ideological authoritarianism and of gender. AlI three writers describe aspects of the Soviet. and humant condition, in unique ways. Lydia Chukovskaya's fiction portrays women, paralyzed by the scope of the Stalinist terror. who attempt to survive with dignity and accept their individ uaI responsibi1i ty. I. Grekova writes about single women who main tain their autonomy through a balance between their professional and domestic lives. Tatiana Tolstaya's characters inhabit an atmosphere of lyrienl alienation from which there is no exit. This study examines in detail the work of thesc writcrs in the context of other Soviet men and women writers, as weB as in the light of Western, feminist thought.
