  • Thomas Carlyle and the Making of Frederick the Great
Thomas Carlyle and the making of Frederick the Great Linda C Stewart, B.A. (Hons.), M.Sc. A thesis submitted in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy To English Literature School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures University of Edinburgh 30th September 2009 ii Abstract ____________________________________________________________________ Thomas Carlyle’s History of Friedrich II. of Prussia, called Frederick the Great was published in six volumes between 1858 and 1865 and was his last major work. Carlyle had a specific purpose in mind when he began writing Frederick. He believed that contemporary events had left Europe in disarray and the British nation fragmented. In his view, the nation needed to function as a family unit, with the older, more experienced members of the group instructing and educating the young. Carlyle’s attempt to address the situation with the publication of his Latter-Day Pamphlets in 1850 had failed, largely due to their aggressive tone. He adopted an entirely different approach when it came to writing Frederick. Chapter one explores Carlyle’s vacillation over his choice of Frederick as a suitable subject for his history and investigates his soul-searching over whether or not to proceed with the project. It examines the three-way relationship which Carlyle created between himself, Frederick and the reader and explores the various language techniques that Carlyle used to create and maintain this relationship. In chapter two, Carlyle’s style of writing in Frederick is investigated. It argues that Carlyle was engaged in the act of storytelling and explores the various literary techniques that he used to achieve this.

Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College Antisemitisms: Facing the Longest Hatreds in a post Holocaust World This introduction to the “world’s longest hatred” is not meant to be comprehensive and will be generally restricted to my own focus, research, personal experience, and imagination. I will explore the role of antisemitism in the context of the development of Western European individual and collective identities that created an “imaginable” foundation for the Nazis. What are the roots of antisemitism? How do individual and collective identities shape its various expressions? How is it similar to and different from racism, bigotry, and prejudice? How has it manifested itself in different times and places? Were the Nazis different or part of a continuum? What is the role of imagination? How does antisemitism allow perpetrators to morally justify their actions by shifting their moral universe? Focus questions: Where does antisemitism come from and how does it give meaning to individual and collective identities? How does antisemitism act as a “virus” – mutating to penetrate societal norms? Hate cannot be publicly aired without some form of justification. What sources of authority within cultures have legitimated and sanctioned antisemitism? What made central and eastern European antisemitism lethal? For classroom discussion: What was surprising and/or interesting about this reading? What questions do you have of the text? What needs to be clarified for you? What are the important ideas and themes for you? How to deal with issues of identity? Antisemitism, broadly defined, are feelings, attitudes and acts of prejudice and hatred against Jews.

  • The Chieftain
Van der Vaart-Verschoof FRAGMENTING THE CHIEFTAIN There is a cluster of Early Iron Age (800–500 BC) elite burials in the Low Countries in which bronze vessels, weaponry, horse-gear and wagons were interred CHIEFTAIN THE FRAGMENTING as grave goods. Mostly imports from Central Europe, these objects are found brought together in varying configurations in cremation burials generally known as chieftains’ graves or princely burials. In terms of grave goods they resemble the Fürstengräber of the Hallstatt Culture of Central Europe, with famous Dutch and Belgian examples being the Chieftain’s grave of Oss, the wagon-grave of Wijchen and the elite cemetery of Court-St-Etienne. Fragmenting the Chieftain presents the results of an in-depth and practice-based archaeological analysis of the Dutch and Belgian elite graves and the burial practice through which they were created. It was established that the elite burials are embedded in the local burial practices – as reflected by the use of the cremation rite, the bending and breaking of grave goods, and the pars pro toto deposition of human remains and objects, all in accordance with the dominant local urnfield burial practice. It appears that those individuals interred with wagons and related items warranted a more elaborate funerary rite, most likely because these ceremonial and cosmologically charged vehicles marked their owners out FRAGMENTING as exceptional individuals. Furthermore, in a few graves the configuration of the grave good set, the use of textiles to wrap grave goods and the dead and the reuse of burial mounds show the influence of individuals familiar with Hallstatt Culture burial customs.
