Islay is not large - approximately 25 miles favoured by commercial conifers. Islay receives average annual rainfall of 1237mm. wide and 16 miles long, but well-served by a network of county roads. Timber from the island has previously been transported from Port Ellen. Port Askaig is 3.5 miles to the east of Finlaggan Forest; Bowmore, the administrative capital of the island 9.5 miles to the south-west and Port Ellen, on the south coast - The attached sale plan shows Lot 1, Bunnahabhain, extending to 605 hectares; lying just 18 miles. to the south is Lot 2 Finlaggan, 378 hectares. Eilean Mor is the island in the foreground of this photograph (not included in the sale) From 1329–1493, Argyll and the Hebridean Islands were governed by the Lords of the Isles. These Scottish rulers were descendants of Sommerled who is renowned for freeing the Western Isles from the tyranny of the Vikings. It was here at Finlaggan that the Council of the Hebridean Lords met to settle disputes, discuss rulings and pass new laws. ACCESS To Lot 1 – Bunnahabhain: From A2, continue north on the county road to point A6 carry on to A7, just before Balulive Farm, then on to the start of the forest at A8.     DUN FHINN KILDALTON, ISLAY AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY DATA STRUCTURE REPORT May 2017 Roderick Regan Summary The survey of Dun Fhinn and its associated landscape has revealed a picture of an area extensively settled and utilised in the past dating from at least the Iron Age and very likely before. In the survey area we see settlements developing across the area from at least the 15 th century with a particular concentration of occupation on or near the terraces of the Kintour River. Without excavation or historical documentation dating these settlements is fraught with difficulty but the distinct differences between the structures at Ballore and Creagfinn likely reflect a chronological development between the pre-improvement and post-improvement settlements, the former perhaps a relatively rare well preserved survival.     Corranbuie & Skipness Land Management Plan Summary Corranbuie & Skipness LMP was approved on 30-1-12017 and runs for 10 years. Vision Corranbuie and Skipness are two adjoining forests, see map 1 Location, lying immediately to the south of the village of Tarbert on Loch Fyne, linked by open hill land rising to over 350m at the highest point. Loch Fyne forms the majority of the eastern boundary while the western area is adjacent to elevated heath and private forestry plantations. Tarbert and Skipness are the closest settlements and the nearest transport link is the A83T which links Tarbert with Campbeltown. Ferry routes run close by from Tarbert to Portavadie, Claonaig to Arran and Kennacraig to Islay. Tarbert is an important tourist hub, with access provision into the forest from the village. The Kintyre Way runs through the forest. The eastern coastal strip is noted for its designated Atlantic oakwoods. The total combined management area is 2996.8ha.     Chapter 27 Our Lyon Family Ancestry Introduction Just when I think I have run out of ancestors to write about, I find another really interesting one, and that leads to another few weeks of research. My last narrative was about our Beers family ancestors, going back to Elizabeth Beers (1663-1719), who married John Darling Sr. (1657-1719). Their 2nd-great granddaughter, Lucy Ann Eunice Darling (1804-1884), married Amzi Oakley (1799-1853). Lucy Ann Eunice Darling’s parents were Samuel Darling (1754- 1807) and Lucy Lyon (1760-1836). All of these relationships are detailed in the section of the “Quincy Oakley” family tree that is shown below: In looking at this part of the family tree, I realized that I knew absolutely nothing about Lucy Lyon [shown in the red rectangle in the lower-right of the family tree on the previous page] other than the year she was born (1760) and the year she died (1836). I didn’t even know where she lived (although Fairfield County, Connecticut, would have been a good guess). What was her ancestry? When did her ancestors come to America? Where did they live before that? To whom are we related via the Lyon family connection? So after another few weeks of work, I now can tell her story. And it is a pretty good one! The Lyon Family in Fairfield, Connecticut Lucy Lyon was descended from Richard Lyon Jr. (1624-1678), who was one of three Lyon brothers who emigrated from Scotland in the late 1640’s. Scotch Whisky has been made for more than 500 years and uses just a few natural raw materials - water, cereals and yeast. Scotland is home to over 130 malt and grain distilleries, making it the greatest MAP OF concentration of whisky producers in the world. HIGHLAND MALT The Highland region is geographically the largest Scotch Whisky SCOTCH producing region.
