He says as few as 400 parks in Australia are accredited today – a number he believes the new organisation can double. Price gouging Maybe the park operators should have a long hard look at themselves. Here are just a few points. 1. Increase in fees from $35 per night to $55 per night for school holidays (I can document this) 2. $8 to $10 night extra for kids. Perhaps it stems from its history as a former showpiece for Australian manufacturing. The Flynn first went on display at the 1956 International Melbourne Motor Show, held in Melbourne during the city’s golden Olympics year. Roadhaven was regarded as one of Australia’s top caravans at the time – in fact the country’s foremost caravan aficionado Keith Winser was the most famous owner and promoter of the brand – he owned four of them! Graham and Linda bought theirs six years ago. It had been used as a sleepout and kept under cover for 35 years, which explains its outstanding condition. Even today, the Flynn still stands out from the crowd, with its distinctive shape and quality inclusions.

The Newcastle toaster It’s the vintage caravan that takes its name from the city where it was created. The Newcastle was built in 1960, using components including a complete body from the huge Carapark company, based just up the road in the Hunter town of Maitland. Bob “Cobber” Kerr and his wife Yvonne bought and restored the caravan six years ago. “It was built for a Port Stephens oyster farmer originally and kept on a jetty above a mangrove swamp,” Bob says. “It was in remarkably good condition due to its construction from “Reswood” - plywood impregnated with resin. “It was a very durable treatment of plywood developed in the 1950s by Sydney company Ralph Symonds Pty Ltd.”

Bob and Yvonne with their Newcastle caravan 20 timetoroam.com.au upfront | feature Gavin Ottaway and his family with their 69 Ambassador Brand new Viscount – from 1969 Stepping into Gavin Ottaway’s Ambassador Alumvan is like stepping back in time.

Everything is shiny and new like it just came out of the Viscount factory. Possibly a great restoration job you might think, but it’s not. Gavin purchased the Viscount 12 months ago from the original owner in Bendigo. The first owner only used it three times and then kept it a shed for 45 years. The fact it was carefully stored and hardly ever used explains the almost-new feeling. Even the annexe looks like it was made yesterday. The Viscount’s lost years are now being made up for by the the Ottaway family. They’re using the classic van for regular getaways, but obviously taking special care not to mark or damage the shiny 1960s finishes.

Issue 09 Jun/Jul 2014 21 upfront | feature Anthony and Kathy Dack with their Tabbert Caravan An Ideal German- Australian marriage

Anthony and Kathy Dack are proud owners of two of the most photographed car and caravan duos from the vintage rally.

A bright pink 1959 Holden FC matched with a 1960s German-built Tabbert caravan. A motor mechanic from Tathra NSW, Anthony found both vehicles locally. The car was a virtual wreck when he started out. After eight years of restoration, the car now looks like it was just driven out of the showroom- a real credit to Anthony’s meticulous trade skills. The Dacks say the caravan was imported by a local German family (by the name of Mr and Mrs Berlin) who returned to their native country in the 1960s and bought the caravan back with them, along with a Mercedes Benz car. The compact Tabbert is almost nothing like the Australian caravans of the same era, Coming up next issue: with many ingenious German-designed Caraparks in the Desert features, including a lift-up grate in the floor Time to Roam goes bush with to allow you to easily sweep out dust. a couple of classic Caraparks, tracing the history of this iconic Aussie caravan

It bridges motorhome class boundaries, Since the early 2000s however, large, sitting somewhere between a large camper economical vans have been released in van and a small B class motorhome. Melaleuca has both. While I love the compact We’ve talked quite a bit about the Fiat Ducato nature of a camper van, the Melaleuca offers in previous reviews and it is worth repeating the extra space needed for more comfortable that the new Euro 5 compliant Fiat Ducato uses touring for longer periods. 36 timetoroam.com.au tried + tested | motorhome review the seats are very comfortable. I also love the way the passenger and drivers seats swivel around to face each other (or the main living space) and there’s a little table to drop in between them for casual dining or a handy work station.

Sleeping space fit for a king The Melaleuca might be compact but the sleeping area is spacious and highly practical. For the solo adventurer, the sleeping area at rear can be configured as a 50/50 setup which offers half the space as seating and half the space as a permanent single bed setup facing east west across the van. For taller people or twin share, you can have two 1870mm long single beds facing north south or drop the table down between the two, slide the cushion across and you get a vast king-sized bed. Now that’s versatile! There is also a 2/3 - 1/3 option when ordering the Melaleuca where the rear section is built a little wider for a permanent double bed at the rear, with the option of an innerspring mattress. With this setup, there is permanent seating just forward of the bed.

Space for essentials Some people like to take everything with them when they hit the road and there are some pretty impressive larger motorhomes to accommodate this approach. The Melaleuca however is designed for simplified travel. Cupboard storage is perfect for food stocks for one or two people along with clothing, books and personal technology. The cabinetry construction material is an impressive pressure laminated ply which uses balsa wood for extra lightness and is so hardy it should still look good in 20 years. Horizon also uses self-locking Italian sourced cupboard handles that are both stylish and practical. They make a nice upgrade from the industry standard push button catches. Unlike the button design, these handles are self locking when you release them so you won’t have any drawers or cupboards flying open as you drive off. For stowing larger items such as chairs, outdoor table, sporting equipment and so on, there is heaps of under-bed storage space easily accessed via the rear doors, plus a sizeable area above the driving cab which is perfect for spare bedding, coats and other bulky light weight items.

Dinner time One of the great benefits of traveling in a motorhome over hotel/motel style travel is the ability to buy fresh local produce as you pass through different regions and then prepare your gourmet feast in your own little kitchen. Bench space is naturally compressed due to the minimised length of the Melaleuca, but the dining table provides ample additional preparation space for what is likely to be a simple meal for one or two people as opposed to a banquet for half a dozen guests. Issue 09 Jun/Jul 2014 41 on the roam | our top 5 make a lifestyle and living out of it. It was definitely a leap of faith to leave behind the nine to five thing and the steady income, but we got out there, took the risk and now we couldn’t be happier. I love travelling with Jane because I think there’s something fantastic about sharing your experiences with someone. There are so many highlights in every trip – even simple things, like going through towns in Australia and meeting the locals or camping in places where nature is at your doorstep. Travel highlights are just so numerous and being able to share the unexpected moments with Jane makes it all the more memorable. However, there’s nothing like living in close proximity with your partner to test a relationship. I also think it’s important to plan well, but not necessarily within an inch of life. Know what you’re going to be doing and have plans in place, but still allow room for flexibility as things often pop up unexpectedly. So many people fail to embrace that spirit of adventure OUR when travelling. But I’ve found that getting out there, welcoming the mystery and having that curiosity to learn from the unexpected is what makes all the difference. This kind of life isn’t for everybody, but Jane and I love what we do and we love our lifestyle. If you want to do something, TOP FIVE you should just be brave about it and take that leap. Even if it’s just for a holiday, I think everyone should get in the caravan, get out there and find their own adventure. Jane & Michael Pelusey

Purnululu National Park, WA We have walked, cycled, four wheel drived and helicoptered in and out of the amazing beehives formations and deep gorges of Purnululu in the Kimberley region. We have experienced the exceptional tourist side as well as the traditional owners aspect of Purnululu. It is an adventure to get there and worth every bit of energy spent.

Fraser Island, QLD We only managed to get to Fraser Island at the end of 2012, but it quickly became one of our favourite places in Australia. There is the excitement of the car ferry and arriving to an island that is 4WD access only. The contrast between the white long stretches of beach on the east coast to the deep dense rainforest of the interior is spellbinding. And there are the unique freshwater lakes, one of the reasons why Fraser Island is a World Heritage Site. Swimming at Lake Mackenzie is one of those special experiences. Seeing a dingo in the wild is also a highlight. All this on an island completely made of sand.

Western MacDonnell Ranges, NT If you have seen an Albert Namatjira painting you will know the West Macs. West of Alice Springs is a line of ranges with many highlights. For us as walkers, the Larapinta Trail is high on the must do list, but for those less active there is Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Serpentine Gorge, Ochre Pits, Ormiston Gorge, Redbank Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge, Tnorala Gosse Bluff, Palm Valley, Mount Sonder, Mount Zeil and Mount Giles. Mount Sonder is the highest mountain in the Northern Territory. The vistas are iconic outback Australian and truly the red centre.

Blue Mountains, NSW The Three Sisters at Katoomba is the iconic view of the Blue Mountains but once you get away from the tourists at Echo Point, the magic starts. The network of walking trails across the top and up and down gorges and heavily forested valleys keep us busy every time we visit. We love coming across lyrebirds while hiking along a misty trail in the early morning. We also love the dense forest of tree ferns and eucalyptus. Michael loves getting up early to photograph the mist lifting out of the deep valleys and the magic light near sunset, illuminating sheer rock faces in a golden glow. It’s hard to believe that such an immense wilderness is so close to Sydney.
