A new look at the emerging Patterns of Church-State Relations in the Early Medieval West By Wayne Louis Belschner Director: Richard Lennan Readers: Francine Cardman, George Demacopoulos, Robin Fleming, Catherine Mooney Abstract By the time Gregory the Great (590-604) began his ministry as bishop of Rome, the political, economic, and social circumstances in Italy were dire, as evidenced by ongoing barbarian threats, Rome’s failing infrastructure, monuments and aqueducts in need of repair, abandoned farms, and decimated populations. As a result, demands were made on Gregory to tend to both the spiritual and physical needs of the people in Rome and in Italy. I argue that through his actions and writings, Gregory took control of the situation, and transcended pre- established ecclesiastical policies and procedures that permitted religious authorities to enter into political affairs. An examination of the fourth-century paradigm of Ambrose, bishop of Milan, and the fifth-century paradigm of Leo the Great, bishop of Rome, introduces earlier examples in which pastoral leaders became active in state matters. Gregory, while not explicitly stating their influence on him, goes beyond them both and develops a paradigm uniquely his own. Gregory’s eschatology significantly shaped his understanding of the need to be involved in both religious and political matters. In analyzing his Pastoral Rule, Moralia, and homilies on the Gospels and the Prophet Ezekiel, I have identified the virtues and qualities that Gregory felt all pastoral leaders must possess. The resulting profile of leadership emphasizes the moral conduct and the intentionality that those in authority need to operate. Through examining a large selection of his letters, I have been able to present a political theology that was key to Gregory’s entrance into political affairs and his development of social programs that tended to the physical needs of the people. I conclude that Gregory’s profile of leadership and political theology reveal a new paradigm which is his contribution to the ongoing development of the relationship between the Church and the state as both emerge from the age of late antiquity. Every nation in the world has its own history, and at the same time all nations are interconnected in the history in this or that way. All the events of the world’s history are recurrent and people of today should study history so that not to repeat the mistakes of past generations and avoid the difficulties they experienced. History of every nation in the world possesses its own tragic and glorious episodes. History is the combination of political, economic, social, military and religious events and processes that form the direction in which this or that nation develops. In this paper, the history of one country of African continent will be considered – the history of Tunisia and of colonization of this country by various nations (Balout vol. 1). The history of Tunisia is very complicated and filled with tragic moments of decline and glorious moments of power and influence. The epochs of Berber nation, Phoenician establishment of the first city-states on the territory of the modern Tunisia, Punic Wars and Roman conquest, Vandals, Byzantines and Ottomans, French colonization and, finally, the Independence of the country – all these stages of development of Tunisia are very important and influential for the shaping of the modern country (Balout vol. 1). The current paper will focus on all the most significant periods of the history of Tunisia with special attention paid to the political, social and military processes that affected the territory of the modern Tunisia in this or that way.

Gregory’s work was part culmination of pre-existing practice, part innovation. I contend that Gregory transformed fading, ancient institutions and ideas—the Imperial annona, the monastic soup kitchen-hospice or xenodochium, Christianity’s “collection for the saints,” Christian caritas more generally and Greco-Roman euergetism—into something distinctly ecclesiastical, indeed “papal.” Although Gregory has long been closely associated with charity, few have attempted to unpack in any systematic way what Gregorian charity might have looked like in practical application and what impact it had on the Roman Church and the Roman people. Despite being eclipsed by the power of the emperors in the first century BC, the men who made up this order continued to act as the keepers of Roman civilization for the next four hundred years, maintaining their traditions even beyond the disappearance of an emperor in the West. Despite their longevity, the members of the senatorial aristocracy faced an existential crisis following the Ostrogothic conquest of the Italian peninsula, when the forces of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I invaded their homeland to contest its ownership. Considering the role they played in the later Roman Empire, the disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy following this conflict is a seminal event in the history of Italy and Western Europe, as well as Late Antiquity. Two explanations have been offered to explain the subsequent disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy. The first involves a series of migrations, beginning before the Gothic War, from Italy to Constantinople, in which members of this body abandoned their homes and settled in the eastern capital.

    EARLY CHRISTIAN AND BYZANTINE Amulet: St. Symeon Stylites Byzantine, 12th c. CE Lead 64.76 Museum Purchase The lead amulet shows the bust of Saint Symeon emerging from the top of a column. An angel stands to left and right, one of them on a ladder. Below the angels appear the Saint’s mother and his disciple Conon. Saint Symeon was an ascetic who lived most of his life on the top of a column. After his death, the column on which he died was venerated and attracted pilgrims who came to be healed. Amulets like this one were considered to have healing properties and were made for the pilgrims who came to the sanctuary. An inscription around the edge of the amulet confirms its healing nature. It reads: “Blessed medallion of Saint Symeon Thaumatourgos (healer/performer of miracles). Praise god in his Saints. (a quote from Psalm 151) Amen.” This type of amulet, created to heal or prevent disease or illness, was very common. (MAA 11/07) Amulet: Holy Rider Byzantine, Palestine, 5th c. CE Bronze 70.99 Museum Purchase The bronze amulet is one of the most popular in Late Antiquity (5th to 7th centuries). On one side it shows a mounted warrior stabbing with his spear a fallen figure, an image which is found also in both pagan and Jewish art but is assimilated into Christian beliefs. Amulets like this one were worn as a general protection against evil. A Greek inscription above reads: “One God conquering Evil.” On the other side is the figure of Christ Crucified.

I agree with this dating, but I think that there may be some points containing possible historical traces that go back even to the first century AD, such as the letters exchanged by king Abgar and Tiberius. Some elements in them point to the real historical context of the reign of Abgar ‘the Black’ in the first century.     The Responses of Pope Nicholas I to the Questions of the Bulgars A.D. 866 (Letter 99) Translated by W. L. North from the edition of Ernest Perels, in MGH Epistolae VI, Berlin, 1925, pp.568-600. Introduction Since the sixth century, the Bulgars had known intermittent contact with the Christians of the surrounding nations, whether as merchants or prisoners-of-war or through diplomatic relations. During the later eighth and early ninth century, the Christian population in Bulgar lands increased so much that Christians were rumored to have influence at the court of Khan Krum (802-814); they were also persecuted under Khan Omortag (814-31). The Bulgars continued to remain "officially" pagan until the reign of Khan Boris, who came to power around 852. Several factors may have led Khan Boris to assume a more favorable attitude towards Christianity. First, Christianity offered a belief-system that transcended — at least potentially — cultural or ethnic boundaries and thereby offered a means not only to unify Bulgaria's disparate populations but also to secure legitimacy and respect with Byzantium and the West. The ideology of Christian rulership also enhanced the position of the prince vis-à-vis his subjects including the often contentious boyars. Furthermore, Boris' sister had converted to Christianity while a hostage in Constantinople and may have influenced her brother. Finally, Boris himself seems to have been attracted to Christian beliefs and practices, as evidenced by the seriousness with which he pursued the conversion of his people. Boris' move towards Christianity seems to have begun in earnest with the opening of negotiations in 862 between himself and Louis the German for an alliance against Ratislav of Moravia.
