Previous col- lections of vegetative Merostachys specimens from El Triunfo, Chiapas, Mexico, were identified as M. pauciflora. However, new flowering collections from the state of Tabasco, Mexico, allowed us to differentiate the Mexican populations from M. latifolia and M. pauciflora. A detailed study of samples from the Tabasco population, and a review of the previous collections from Chiapas, confirmed the existence of a new Merostachys species, which we here describe and illustrate as M. -

Hitchcock, Systematic Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, u entitled Types of American grasses: a study of the American species of grasses described by Linnaeus, Gronovius, Sloane, Swartz, and Michaux," is an important contribution to our knowledge of American grasses. It is regarded as of fundamental importance in the critical sys- tematic investigation of any group of plants that the identity of the species described by earlier authors be determined with certainty. Often this identification can be made only by examining the type specimen, the original description being inconclusive. Under the American code of botanical nomenclature, which has been followed by the author of this paper, "the nomenclatorial t}rpe of a species or subspecies is the specimen to which the describer originally applied the name in publication." The procedure indicated by the American code, namely, to appeal to the type specimen when the original description is insufficient to identify the species, has been much misunderstood by European botanists. It has been taken to mean, in the case of the Linnsean herbarium, for example, that a specimen in that herbarium bearing the same name as a species described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum must be taken as the type of that species regardless of all other considerations. -

Vascular Plants of Williamson County Leersia hexandra − CLUBHEAD CUTGRASS [Poaceae] Leersia hexandra Swartz, CLUBHEAD CUTGRASS. Aquatic perennial herb, clonal, with submersed, short-lived rhizomes and stolon-bearing, fibrous-rooted, not rosetted, shoots in sparse clones with stolons arising from mother plant, mother plant rooted from short rhizome having several emergent shoots, stolons submersed and horizontal initially with 1 emergent shoot at a node, in range to 35 cm tall; flowering shoot with several basal leaves including at least 2 with photosynthetic blades and ca. 4 cauline leaves, axes with hairs at nodes, conspicuously scabrous, shoot unbranched with terminal inflorescence or with an ascending lateral shoot from an axillary bud above midplant; rhizomes poorly defined with many adventitious roots; stolons (termed rhizomes by other authors) with long, slender internodes, to 30 × ca. 0.7 mm, with 1−3 adventitious roots per node with or without an emergent shoot. Stems: cylindric, hidden by sheaths, internodes smooth, nodes purple- red, appearing channeled to flattened, to 2 mm diameter, having dense, stiff, appressed downward-pointing hairs (incl. basal of leaf sheath) with hirsute hairs to 1 mm long. Leaves: alternate distichous, simple with sheath; prophyll at base of emergent shoot of mother plant, to 10 mm long, membranous, light red-purple, appearing open, conspicuously 2-keeled with wide membranous margins, with sparse minute teeth along keels; sheath open but tightly sealed around stems, sheaths often with sparse, minute -

One of the plants that can also be used to treat fever caused by parasitic diseases is bamboo (Bambusa sp.). The purpose of this research is to identify the type and potential of bamboo as an antimalarial compound in Lampung Province. This research be able to provide an overview of the diversity of bamboo species and their potential as an antimalaria compound in Lampung Province in May-July 2020. Primary data collection methods were obtained directly in the field including bamboo stands, both growing wild and cultivating, and describing them. Morphological observations for identification such as rhizome root types; bamboo shoots; branching; culm; leaf; stem; and segments refer to the criteria used by Widjaja (1997). The data is analyzed descriptively and tabulated. The results obtained 14 species of bamboo consisting of 5 genera with 14 species: Gigantochloa robusta, Schizostachyum brachycladum (Kurz), Schizostachyum blumei, Gigantochloa atroviolacea, Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea (Steud.), Bambusa vulgaris var. striata (Lodd.ex Lindl.), Gigantochloa apus (Kurz), Dendrocalamus strictus, Bambusa maculate (Widjaja), Bambusa glaucophylla (Widjaja), Dendrocalamus asper (Backer ex K. Heyne), Dinochloa scandens (Blume ex Nees Kuntze), Bambusa glaucophylla (Widjaja), Dendrocalamus asper (Backer ex K. Heey), Dinochloa scandens (Blume ex Nees Kuntze), Bambusa multiplex (Lour.) MANAGING THE TOP FIVE INVASIVE PLANTS IN CALVERT COUNTY 1. What are the top 5 invasive plants in Calvert County? Phragmites, English Ivy, Kudzu, Bamboo and Autumn Olive. Phragmites common reed (Phragmites australis) Accidentally imported in ship ballast, European phragmites has spread up and down the East Coast for centuries, displacing millions of acres of wetland plants, including native phragmites. The Maryland Eastern Shore may harbor our only remaining native phragmites (Phragmites australis ssp. americanus.) Whereas native phragmites grows in sparse clumps and decomposes readily, European phragmites forms impenetrable monocultures more than 15-feet tall composed of both old and new canes. Subsequently, infested wetlands become dry land, wildlife habitat is destroyed, and a fire hazard created. Roots penetrate several feet deep and extend out 10 feet a season. Wind and water, carrying seed and rhizome/root fragments, have spread phragmites to tidal and nontidal wetland and dry lands, including ditches. It is extremely difficult to combat. English ivy (Hedera helix) Eurasian, not English, in origin, this evergreen vine threatens habitats at all heights. At ground level, its leaves shade out seedlings and herbs, forming acres of monoculture and attracting rodents. In trees, it engulfs branches, shading and slowly killing them. Its weight topples trees in wind, snow or icy conditions. It serves as a reservoir for bacterial leaf scorch, a serious disease of trees including maples, oaks and elms. Vines mature in trees, then flower and bear toxic berries which induce birds to vomit them out, ensuring spread. Any rooted piece can resprout. Kudzu (Pueraria montana var. lobata) “The vine that ate the South” was promoted as livestock forage, an ornamental, and for erosion control until the 1950s. -

S TAPLETON * This paper continues the systematic treatment of the bamboos of Nepal and Bhutan, covering four hardy temperate genera with semelauctant inflorescences and 3 stamens from the subtribe Arundinariinae Bentham. Arundinaria Michaux has leptomorph rhizomes, while Thamnocalamus Munro, Yushania Keng f., and the new genus Borinda have pachymorph rhizomes. The separation of these and related Sino-Himalayan genera is discussed. Sinarundinaria Nakai is treated as a synonym of Fargesia Franchet, a genus that is not known from the Himalayas. A new treatment of Himalayan Thamnocalamus species is given, including the description of two new subspecies of Thamnocalamus spathiflorus (Trin.) Munro, subsp . nepalensis and subsp . occidentalis, and one new variety, bhutanensis. T. aristatus is treated as a synonym of T. spathiflorus subsp. spathiflorus, and Fargesia crassinoda Yi is transferred and given new status as Thamnocalamus spathiflorus (Trin.) Munro var. crassinodus (Yi) Stapleton. Two new species of Borinda are described: B. chigar from West Nepal and B. emeryi from East Nepal. Six species of Fargesia from Tibet are transferred to Borinda, which thus comprises eight species. STATUS AND S EPARATION OF THE G ENERA Bamboos from the mountains of the Indian subcontinent and China with 3 stamens and terete culms were all placed in Arundinaria Michaux until late in the 19th century, when two genera for bamboos with spathate inflorescences were described. Munro (1868) described Thamnoca- lamus as a Himalayan genus with groups of one to four racemes at the tips of branchlets, each raceme being enclosed in a spathe.
