From the day that I changed my college major to English Literature from the rather more lucrative Computer Science, to my decision to move two thousand miles from home to pursue a Master's degree at Washington State University, to my subsequent choice to stay at WSU for my Ph.D., my parents and brother have always been amazingly supportive, even during the times when they might very well have suspected that I'd just gone crazy. To mom, dad, and Justin: I still miss being home, but your understanding has made my time away much easier than it might have been, and that's made a huge difference. And yes, if you were still wondering, I actually have gone a little crazy... Jason's fascinating seminar on mobile technology got me to start thinking about the possibility of substantive connections between the wilderness and technology as well as inspiring me to try making a location-based mobile game of my own, which was easily the most fun I've ever had doing homework since the days of safety scissors and eating glue. Finally, thanks to Jon for calmly answering nearly countless panic-stricken emails, and for not balking when I came into his office five months before my defense and told him that I wanted to include a chapter on video games. Bunting, Jr., Ph.D. Washington State University May 2012 Chair: Jon Hegglund This dissertation is a critique of the American concept of wilderness. Traditionally, this concept has assumed the necessity of a geographic locus that embodies the qualities of “the natural,” but I challenge this assumption, positing that what we value most in our interactions with wilderness places is not the physical location, but instead a quality of experience that we find at that location. By theorizing how this quality can be transplanted to contexts beyond the wilderness place in the first two chapters, I argue for a new concept of wilderness that is not constrained by geography, that allows us access to experiential wildness nearly anytime and anywhere. The remaining three chapters provide practical examples of how this wildness can be deterritorialized. First, I examine literature dealing with the practice of urban exploration – including L.B. Deyo and David Leibowitz's Invisible Frontier: Exploring the Tunnels, Ruins, and Rooftops of New York and Julia Solis' New York Underground: The Anatomy of a City – to show how it functions as a method for bringing wildness to city space. Second, I discuss the recent video game Minecraft, arguing that it intentionally presents a gameworld to the player that encourages meaningful experiences of wildness not unlike those afforded to the urban explorer. Third and last, I investigate the possibilities for wildness represented by mobile gaming and the integration vii of the location-aware interface with “real life”. Here I draw on the examples of Foursquare and geocaching to illustrate how these games can encourage a reinscribing of walked space by the player through the mobile interface's superimposition of a virtual layer of place-information onto the physical world. Ultimately, in addition to constructing a new theory of “wilding” space from a synthesis of previous space/place theorists' works, my dissertation argues for the relevance of three different-but-related spatial practices that I believe are all deserving of more serious critical attention. There follows a seventeen-year story of parents' sacrificing their own in­ terests for their daughters', and giving them the benefits of a Columbia School education. With the exception of the date and the events, the story is the same for parents of the entire school, Nursery through the Senior class.     Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 4 (October 2015) Activists, Bodies, and Political Arguments Jason Del Gandio The following essay is adapted from a keynote address presented at the 2014 Patti Pace Performance Festival. The live address included a PowerPoint presentation involving a series of images and videos.1 One of the great strengths of the Patti Pace Festival is the wide range of attendees, which include high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and professors. This address aims for a middle ground by targeting the undergraduate audience. In brief, the address discussed the manner by which activists use their bodies to make political arguments. Setting the Stage: An Introduction People often think of argumentation in terms of verbal communication—for example, someone advances a claim, supports it with evidence, and provides an overall rationale. But we can also use nonverbal communication to make argu- ments. This is particularly true with activists. Think of anti-war protesters conducting a classic “die-in.” The activists choose a rhetorically significant location—perhaps a military recruiting center or the office of a pro-war representative. The activists gather at the location and at a pre-designated time one of them blows a whistle. Everyone suddenly drops to the ground. Another activist stands among the “lifeless bodies” and recites an anti-war statement. Bomar (guest post) * Original album Original label Buck Owens and His Buckaroos In the fall of 1965, Buck Owens was the biggest country star in the world. He was halfway through a string of sixteen consecutive #1 singles on the country chart in the industry-leading “Billboard” magazine, and had just been invited to appear at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. Already designated a National Historic Landmark, the esteemed venue had hosted Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Bernstein, and Ellington. Owens recognized the honor of being asked, but instructed his manager, Jack McFadden, to decline the offer. “When they first started talking about it, it scared me to death,” he admitted in a 1967 radio interview with Bill Thompson. Buck was worried the Manhattan audience wouldn’t be interested in his music, and he wanted to avoid the embarrassment of unsold tickets. McFadden pushed him to reconsider. When Ken Nelson, Owens’ producer at Capitol Records, suggested they record the performance and release it as his first live album, Buck finally conceded. Buck Owens’ journey to the top of the charts and the top of the bill at the most revered concert hall in the United States began in Sherman, Texas, where he was born Alvis Edgar Owens, Junior in 1929. By 1937, the Owens family was headed for a new life in California, but they wound up settling in Mesa, Arizona, when a broken trailer hitch derailed their plan.

    Patrick Jagoda 1 Digital Games and Electronic Literature: Toward an Intersectional Analysis Introduction: Literature and the Paraliterary Should groups such as the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) play a role in the study of digital games? And what about broader professional organizations such as the Modern Language Association (MLA)? These questions suggest others: Fundamentally, what is the relationship between the categories of “electronic literature” or “literature” as such, on the one hand, and “digital games” on the other? Also, how do we understand the field of literature to be changing when so many compelling artistic experiments are unfolding in the realm of computer, console, and mobile games? The mission statement of the ELO notes that the organization exists to “foster and promote the reading, writing, teaching, and understanding of literature as it develops and persists in a changing digital environment” (Electronic Literature Organization 2013). The overarching MLA statement explains that the organization works to “strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature” (Modern Language Association 2013). It is noteworthy (though perhaps unsurprising to most readers) that games are nowhere to be found in either of these statements. Since the focus, in these descriptions, is on the term “literature,” it is worth asking one final and more rudimentary question: How does the form of “games,” especially as it has transformed in the early twenty-first century, relate to the category of “literature”? In his work from the mid-1990s, novelist and critic Samuel Delany posits a material practice of “paraliterature” that describes “texts which the most uncritical literary reader would describe as ‘just not literature.’” In the illustrative list that follows, he includes “Comic books, mysteries, westerns, science fiction, pornography, greeting card verse, newspaper reports, academic criticism, advertising texts, movie and TV scripts, popular song lyrics” (Delany 1995, Patrick Jagoda 2 210).

    Edward Abbey to give fourth annual David Marc Belkin Memorial Lecture April 5, 1982 Edward Abbey, novelist, essayist and part-time forest ranger best known for his hardhitting, sometimes bitter, usually irreverent defense of the world's wilderness areas, will give the fourth annual David Marc Belkin Memorial Lecture Thursday, April 22, at the University of California, San Diego. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 8 p.m. in room 2722 of the Undergraduate Sciences Building on the Revelle campus. The title for Abbey's talk is "A Walk Through the Desert Hills." The Belkin Lectures on environmental issues were established by the parents and friends of David Marc Belkin, an honors graduate of John Muir College at UC San Diego. Belkin lost his life while backpacking in the High Sierra in July 1978. His love for the wilderness prompted his family to establish the endowed memorial fund in his memory. Abbey has been called "A living American artifact, part maverick, part pastoral extremist, part semi-hermit, part latter-day Jeremiah Johnson." His environment is the desert, the forest or the Australian outback; his people are the Indians and the Aborigines who know how to live in these places without spoiling them. His targets range from government agencies that authorize the building of roads through wilderness areas and gigantic corporations that engineer the "rape" of the land, to simple-minded tourists who, according to Abbey, defile the solitude with their very presence. Speaking for himself, Abbey has said, "I've found I can get along comfortably without a four-wheel-drive V-8- powered, gadget-loaded pickup truck.

Abbey was born and grew up in -Edward Abbey, The Fool's Progress (459-60) Indiana County, about 60 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, and spent nearly allofhis first 21years there. His parents were also from the region, and several of his relatives still livein Indiana County. Ed Abbey's writingattracted a popular, even cult following,especially in the West, but there is a double- edged ironyto his fame: he has remained largely unknown in his native Western Pennsyl- < v \u25a0\u25a0•^r-. \u25a0• K&>". r vania, while most ofhis t v " "^ readers inthe West know littleabout the Pennsylvania heritage that Abbey himself .;... Wj considered crucial to his voice as a writer. Desert Solitaire (1968), a book of essays about the red rock country ofArches National Park and Canyon- lands National Park in Utah, tops some lists as the best twentieth-century book about the natural world. The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975), a novel about four activists who believe indirect action against "development" of wilderness James M.Cahalan isprofessor of English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he directed the doctoral program inliterature from 1987 to 1991. An authority on Irishliterature and arecipient ofIUP's Distinguished Faculty Award for Research (1990), Cahalan is the author ofnumerous articles and fivebooks including, most recently, Modern IrishLiterature and Culture: A Chronology (1993). His article "Edward Abbey, Appalachian Easterner," willappear in November in Western American Literature.
