The tle's reference to Greek mythology is, tragically, well‐deserved Parashat HaShavuah with Rabbi Kulwin Parashat HaShavuah, EVERY Saturday morning , at 9:00 AM before Services Israel Through Film Cinema is big in Israel. Israelis love the movies and, for its size, Israel produces a lot of them. Art, by its very nature, is a way of looking at something, and in these sessions we will see what we can learn about Israel through its films: how do Israelis see themselves, how do Israelis see the world, and on why do Israeli filmmakers make the films they do? Somemes, films reinforce the historical narrave with which we are familiar; other mes, films stand that narra‐ ve on its head. We will watch and discuss examples of both. Current Israeli cinema frequently makes it to America – films like Beaufort, Ushpizin and Waltz with Bashir were shown widely. But these five selecons, all about 90 minutes long, in Hebrew with English subtles, are lile seen today. As part of the Israeli canon, however, they were popular, influenal and significant in their day. Rabbi Kulwin will introduce each screening and lead a discussion aerward. Dates are Wednesdays, November 18, January 13, February 10 & March 2. Wednesday, November 18, 7:00 PM Hill 24 Doesn’t Answer (1955) Oen called Israel’s first feature film, and set during the War of Independence, the drama Hill 24 tells the tale of four young Israeli soldiers on the way to defend a strategic hill overlooking Jerusalem. It is a film based on a bold, patrioc theme Wednesday, January 13, 7:00 PM Hill Halfon Doesn’t Answer (1976) A lile John Wayne, lile MASH, and a lot of Marx Brothers, Hill Halfon pokes fun at army life though it’s more in‐ terested in the army as a backdrop for slapsck. The actors include Hagashach Hashiver, an Israeli comedy trio akin, in their day, to Marn and Lewis. History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin First Series for 2015‐2016: Variees of An‐Semism. Historians teach us that an‐Semism takes different forms: Hitler pracced racial an‐Semism, Shakespeare wrote literary an‐Semism, and Spanish Jews suffered from the religious an‐Semism of the Inquision. In these sessions we will read first hand documents including The Mer‐ chant of Venice, Mein Kampf and various Chrisan texts. As we explore the different an‐Semisms, we will discuss their similaries and differences, as well as reach an understanding of how best to define the phenomenon. Monday, November 2, 7:00 PM: Religious An‐Semism; Chrisanity and Israel on the Jews Monday, November 9, 7:00 PM: Economic An‐Semism; Bernard Baruch and the Internaonal Jewish Conspiracy Monday, November 16, 7:00 PM: What is An‐Semism? • The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Presents: the Nature of Music May, 2021 Dear Fellow Educators
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Presents: The Nature of Music May, 2021 Dear Fellow Educators, As spring arrives each year, I am reminded of the powerful relationship between nature and music. Both start as a single seed (or note!) and go on to blossom into something beautiful. Each plant, like each piece of music, is both a continuation of what came before and the start of something new. With Earth Day just a few weeks before our May concert, we wanted to use this Youth Concert as a way to explore and honor our planet through the lens of classical music. During our program, The Nature of Music, you and your students will hear music inspired by rivers, wildflowers, birds, and a busy bumblebee! Musicians have often used the earth’s natural beauty as inspiration for their music, and they try to use musical sounds to paint a picture for our ears, much like an artist would use different colors to paint a picture for our eyes. Each lesson will help your students explore and experience this connection. This concert will be offered virtually (available May 16 – June 4) but we are also accepting reservations for in-person viewing! Our two back-to-back concerts will be on Wednesday, May 5 at 10am and 11:30am. Please contact me or email my colleague in sales, Sabrina Siggers (contact information below), to reserve your classes reservation. You can see up-to-date Meyerson safety protocol below. We humans have a responsibility to respect and care for animals, plants, and the earth’s natural resources.

  • Gewalt Und Alltag Im Besetzten Polen | Pol-Int
Pol-Int SAMMELBAND Gewalt und Alltag im besetzten Polen Beitrag vom: 12.10.2018 Rezension von Dr. Anselm Heinrich Redaktionell betreut von Dr. Mark Keck-Szajbel Dr. Andrzej Klimczuk This edited collection of essays is based on a conference organised by the German Historical Institute Warsaw in 2009. The goal for both the conference and the present volume was to synthesize two distinct approaches to writing the history of Poland during the Second World War. As the editors state in the introduction, German historians have tended to focus on the Nazi occupation in Poland, whereas Polish historians have by and large discussed the Soviet occupation of their country between 1939 and 1941. For the first time, this volume attempts to bring those two historiographical traditions together and produce an overview of everyday life in Poland in its entirety during World War II. In doing so, the volume presents new research and is divided into four major sections: new forms of occupation, new elites, ethnicity and everyday life, resistance and fight. Crucially, it aims to focus on the everyday experience of both the occupiers and the occupied. Mirroring recent trends in historiography, there are a number of illuminating micro-histories and contributions which use local studies to make arguments at the meso-level, "between the individual and the occupying power", as Timothy Snyder writes in his foreword (p. 11). The volume's first section looks at the new forms of control and power as established by the Soviets and the Germans after 1939 with a particular focus on legal questions, ethnic cleansing and "Germanisierung", policing, and mass murder.

  • 'Crime of the Century'
HIGH NOON BECKONS IN THE ARTWORLD’S ‘CRIME OF THE CENTURY’ GIULIANO RUFFINI has been in the headlines since 2016, when French authorities began investigating his onetime ownership of works by Cranach, Hals, Parmigianino and Gentileschi, among others. That investigation was prompted by a Poison-Pen Letter accusing Ruffini of selling not bona fide Old Masters, but Fakes... and, almost unbelievably, fakes good enough to fool the world’s top dealers, auctioneers, museum curators and private collectors – and sell for millions. That anonymous missive is here made public for the first time – with Giuliano Ruffini pointing the finger at man he believes wrote it: his ex-associate JEAN-CHARLES METHIAZ . The two former lady-killers, now in their mid-seventies, have spent the coronavirus lockdown in isolation at opposite ends of Italy: Ruffini with his son Mathieu in the rugged Apennine Hills south of Parma; Méthiaz with his dogs Oscar and Gaston amidst the olive groves of Apulia. Ruffini has been passing the time on home restoration, Méthiaz by posting lengthy diatribes on Facebook. His favourite targets: French President Emmanuel Macron (‘a demented manipulator’); his predecessor François Hollande (‘an incapable moron’); and ‘Al Capone’ – which is how Jean-Charles Méthiaz refers to Giuliano Ruffini. ‘The Head of Old Masters at a prestigious auction house told me that, if they know a painting comes from Ruffini, they don’t even want to look at it’ wrote Méthiaz in March 2020. ‘He even added that this man was the devil.’ When Ruffini and Méthiaz finally emerge blinking into the sunlight, it will be at High Noon – for a shoot-out in France’s Civil Court on 20 May 2021 over what, in another post, Méthiaz has dubbed ‘ l’escroquerie du siècle.
