Per- haps this is true merely because of the impor~ance which the Romantic School places upon the genius of the subj~ct, for all schools of criti- cism recognize Shakespeare's ability at creating effective drama. A more accurate answer, however, probably lies in the fact that "romanti- cism" has a broad base and encompasses so very much. -

SYNOPSIS This thesis consists of an Introduction, followed by Part I (chapters 1-2) in which nineteenth- century criticism of the play is discussed, particular attention being paid to Helen Faucit's essay on Imogen, and its relationship to her playing of the role. In Part II the stags-history of Oymbcline in London is traced from 1785 to Irving's Lyceum production of 1896. Directions from promptbooks used by G-.P. Cooke, W.C. Macready, Helen Eaucit, and Samuel ±helps are transcribed and discussed, and in the last chapter the influence of Bernard Shaw on Ellen Terry's Imogen is considered in the light of their correspondence and the actress's rehearsal copies of the play. There are three appendices: a list of performances; transcriptions of two newspaper reviews (from 1843 and 1864) and one private diary (Gordon Crosse's notes on the Lyceum Gymbeline); and discussion of one of the promptbooks prepared for Charles Kean's projected production. -

B. Yeats thought of him as a mere 'horse of instruction'. Although he suggests that he was scandalously idle, a mere collector of moths and butterflies, a carrier of rats, there was some sneaking comfort in a master's rebuke, 'all the world knew that any Irish boy was cleverer than a whole class-room of English boys' (Autob., pp. 41-2). Yeats was to break the long line of forbears who had attended Trinity College, Dublin, as 'neither my classics nor my mathe• matics were good enough for any examination' (ibid., pp. 79-80), but later he accepted an Honorary degree there as well as at Oxford and Cambridge. -

It is there divided throughout into acts and scenes. I have found the text often difficult to ascertain, and have felt how much cause there is to regret that we possess no Quarto, by which to test the readings of the Folio and correct some of its errors. It has seemed best to be con- servative of the original text, where very strong reasons do not appear for departure from it. But I have accepted some alterations in punctuation suggested by Vaughan and others —alterations which in some instances affect the mean- ing of the passages. With respect to the collation of the Folios, for which I have used my own copies of F 2 and F 4, and the Cam- bridge edition and Mr. Craig's New Shakspere Society edition for F 3, I have noted what appears to me of im- portance and nothing more. It would have been easier to have asked the printers to set up Mr. Craig's complete collation, than to pick out the various readings which seem to me to deserve attention. "The first 5 years of the Arden Shakespeare: 8 plays, 1899-1903" by Gabriel Egan This paper arises from a project to examine the theory and practice of editing Shakespeare in the twentieth century. The New Bibliography that emerged in the first years of the century had by the 1930s clearly affected the way that editions of Shakespeare characterized and responded to the textual situation. My original plan was here to compare the first Arden series (1899-1924) to Cambridge University Press's The New Shakespeare (1921-66) in order to see how quickly and in what ways the new ideas began to shape editorial practice. This turned out to be more work than can be squeezed into an SAA paper, so I hope that seminarians will indulge my giving only the beginnings of the historical survey. I will consider just the 8 play editions that appeared almost at once (within a span of 5 years) at the start of the first Arden Shakespeare series. The Arden Shakespeare was to become the most successful mass readership Shakespeare edition in the twentieth century, articulating recondite textual matters to scholarly readers while also providing commentary and notes that the general reader, the student, and the theatre practitioner would find helpful in trying to understand drama from an historically distant culture. -

The New Shakspere Society, 1873-1894 Robert Sawyer, East Tennessee State University Abstract This essay traces the rise and fall of the New Shakspere Society (1873-1894). Its founder, F. J. Furnivall, promoted the newest scientific advances to apply to Shakespeare's plays in order to produce the correct order in which they had been written. Furnivall was joined in this enterprise by Frederick Gard Fleay, who took meter-measurement tests of Shakespeare to an illogical extreme. Offended by such pseudo-scientific speculation, Algernon Charles Swinburne publicly assaulted both the methods and the members of the Society, ultimately contributing to the demise of the group. Discredited and disgraced, Furnivall formally disbanded the Society in 1894. In 1873, F. J. Furnivall founded the New Shakspere Society,1 an important Shakespeare forum that lasted from its inception until 1894. While its prospectus encouraged papers on the conditions under which Shakespeare and his contemporaries wrote, they were mainly concerned with producing the correct order in which the plays had been written; this chronology, presumably, would shed light on the progress and development of Shakespeare's own mind. The Society also published the proceedings of their meetings, numerous reprints of the plays, and ancillary documents such as Phillip Stubbs's The Anatomy of Abuses. Although Furnivall began his career as a barrister, his enthusiasm for philological matters consumed most of his life. Educated at University College, London, as well as Trinity College, Cambridge, Furnivall founded the Early English Text Society in 1864, the Chaucer Society in 1868, the New Shakspere Society in 1873, the Browning Society in 1881, and the Shelley Society in 1886. -

It is now merely symptomatic of a larger social malaise and belongs in a history of sociology, advertising, or conspiracy theories, not literary scholarship. The history of this Oxfordian sub-movement, since it is primarily a story of concepts derived from obsessive literary metaphor and personal emotion, must be told through the lives of its progenitors, as it has no other real life. Oxfordian critics have always maintained that the life becomes the work. And the lives of the original Tudor Rose proponents, Capt. B. M. Ward (son of Col. B. R. Ward), Percy Allen, and Dorothy Ogbum, explain their work on Tudor Rose theory, though both their writings and their lives offer us many finer hours. As these hours are too frequentiy unrecorded, the present author places himself in the difficult position of suddenly interjecting as defense counsel, while indicting friends to whom he owes much. We are scholars here, hopefully, dealing with documentary evidence, but documents are only part of the story that we will never see completely. Anyone is free to reject the memorial portion of this article. They do not affect the thrust of the argument. Capt. Ward was a very brave man and his published work is of a high standard, while the Tudor Rose theory was merely a private Freudian abena- tion.
