Accordingly, the legendary-biographical elements, the biblical elements, and the panegyrical elements which are found to be common in the hymns are effective techniques for the grouping of the hymns. Since the nineteenth century, with the revival of historical studies in connection with the original sources of medieval history, collections of hymns have appeared in edited form, but mainly for the service of the historian. Studies in the origins and the development of Catholic liturgy include references to the liturgical verse of the Church, as, for example, in the works of Dom Wilmart. There are studies of the hymns of individual writers, as those of the Henry Bradshaw Society for the hymns of St. Gregory the Great, and of Leon Gautier for the sequences of Adam of St. Victor. On a larger scale, sequences and hymns comprise Daniel's Thesaurus for the printed sources, and Mone's col­ lection, for the manuscript sources; Chevalier compiled his vast Repertorium of hymns, Julian has contributed a Dictionary of Hvmnology. and Britt, The Hymns of the Brevi­ ary and the Missal. For another phase, Wilhelm Meyer of Speyer has conducted research into the origin and principles of metrical verse. Raby's History of Christian Latin Poetry is an example of a work that follows the historical outline UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA SCHCC L OF C R ADL ATE STL DiE5 UNIVERSITE D'OTTAWA - ECOLE DES GRADUES INTRODUCTION ix for hymno&y. However, above all others, the largest and most systematic collection of Latin medieval hymns is that of Dreves and Blume, comprised in the fifty-five volumes of the Analecta Hvmnica. with its last addition in 1922. Although this monumental work is divided into main sections, with remarks on certain hymns and on their possible associa­ tions with others, the general arrangement of the hymns ac­ cording to chronological order does not provide a methodical and scientific approach to the hymns which is needed for any extensive analysis of the hymns. The pioneer attempts towards the classification of medieval hymns by a study of their internal subject matter has been made only recently, within the last ten years, by the renowned writer and authority on medieval hymnody, Dr. Joseph Szoverffy. The results have been published in the form of a thesis concerning the hymns of St. Christopher, 2 and in a series of monographs for the hymns of St. Peter and other saints. No extensive study of the Latin hymns of St. Clare of Assisi has been made to date within the knowledge of the writer. Vol. 10, 195^, P» 275-322. - - UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA - SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES UNIVERSITE D'OTTAWA -- ECOLE DES GRADUES INTRODUCTION x chronicles in commemoration of the seventh centenary of the Saint's death, in 1953, the Franciscan, Father Stephen Van Dijk, an authority on early Franciscan liturgy, draws a comparison between the breviary hymns of St. Clare and the breviary hymns of St. Francis as found in the early Offices 2 of the two saints, respectively. In the same brochure, another Franciscan, Padre Fausta Casolini, includes quota­ tions from the best known hymns of St. Clare in a discus­ sion of the literature written in honor of the saint. However, these two worthy contributions in the study of the hymns of St.

Francis's vocation of humility was constituted by a unique blend of subjection, self- sacrifice, inversion, and freedom from worldly constraints. The characteristics that these elements gave rise to included: living the Gospel and the Rule, seeking to be the Lesser Brother in every sense, loving and honouring all brothers equally, obedience, humility in deeds and words, and the exhibition of humility that could not be mistaken for lack of strength or determination. These elements and characteristics form a framework with which to analyse the subsequent early First Order vocation of humility and the vocation of humility under Bonaventure. Studying these three vocations highlights continuities and divergences in formation and complexion.

FRANCIS Lecture 1 INTRODUCTION The Sources for the life of St. Francis embrace the first two centuries of Franciscan history, from the death of St. Francis in 1226 to roughly the last decades of the 14th century. They are fundamental to understand not only the life of St. Francis, but also that of the movement of which he is the founder. Although secondary in importance to the writings of St. Francis, which remain the prime source for his life and ideals, the Sources provide an indispensable aid to situate Francis within the historical context of medieval Italy and within the social, political and ecclesiastical framework in which he lived. The Sources are primarily documents of spirituality, but they are also rich in historical content. Their aim is to be a mirror of the ideals and intentions which Francis lived and which he proposed to his followers. That is why the study of the Sources has to be accompanied by the analysis of the history of the Franciscan Order during the first two centuries of its existence. We are fortunate to live in a period when the majority of the Sources for the life of St. Francis have been critically edited in the original Latin, and when many of them are also translated into modern languages. We are witnessing soaring unemployment in many European countries, particularly in Spain, as well as the deep economic recession that has hit Greece, forcing bailouts to counter the danger of economic collapse in the Eurozone. The situation seems to be deteriorating, even though politicians from different spectrums try to convince us that everything is fine, or else that we are on the eve of doomsday. One of the persistent mistakes in the European Union has been that of forgetting the social and economic roots of Europe. It seems that we are also forgetting the values of the founding fathers of Europe. Forgetting one’s roots is dangerous Quarterly journal of and leads to a crisis of identity and a lack of direction. This gathers the best Latin text of Francis's medieval biographers, including Thomas of Celano, Julian of Speyer, Bonaventure, as well as the famous Legend of the Three Companions. David Grumett Abstract Francis of Assisi is often supposed to have been vegetarian by both modern commentators on his life and the people among whom he lived. In fact, texts show he ate meat on various occasions. As a guest, Francis would not refuse meat if offered it, and when he himself received guests normal dietary practices were sometimes disrupted. Sickness was a second reason for exemptions from normal dining practices, and Francis made personal use of these as part of a wider effort to oppose pressures within the order from brothers seeking to impose more rigorous discipline.

    CONVERSION IN THOMAS OF CELANO'S VITA PRIMA SANCTI FRANC/SCI; EXEMPLAR OF NARRATIVE THEOLOGY? John P. Bequette Saint Francis of Assisi is perhaps the most popular saint in the Christian tradition. In particular, the poverello ("little poor man") appeals to those who demonstrate in their lives a particular solicitude for the poor in conformity with modern Roman Catholic social teaching. Indeed, Francis' contempt for wealth is well known. What is not so well known is the dynamic of conversion that led to this contempt for wealth and identification with the poor. Thomas of Celano, the first biographer of Francis, was acutely aware of both the place of poverty in the identity of Francis and the role of personal conversion in shaping this identity. In the Vita prima Sancti Francisci, Thomas articulates his own understanding of Francis' conversion and how it made Francis into the embodiment of evangelical poverty. Thomas of Celano was commissioned by Pope Gregory IX to write Vita prima Sancti Francisci in 1228 and completed it in 1229 after Francis' canonization.' Thus began a long series of lives of the poor man from Assisi, lives written by several members of the Order of Friars Minor. Thomas himself followed the Vita prima with three other vitae of Francis: the Legenda ad usum chori in 1230, the Vita secunda in 1247, and, in 1254, the Tractatus de miracu/is B. Francisci (171).     The Offices for the Two Feasts of S ain t Dominic Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Patrick Michael Taylor Bergin Jr., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee: Charles Atkinson, Advisor David Clampitt Lois Rosow Copyright by Patrick Michael Taylor Bergin Jr. 2019 Abstract The foundation of the Order of Preachers in 1216 by Dominic of Osma (ca. 1173 - 1221, and the founder’s own meritorious life — exemplifying the virtues of a vir evangelicus for his spiritual descendants — represent a key moment in the religious history of the Middle Ages. Receiving its definitive form in the mid - 1250s, the Dominican Rite provided for the liturgical celebration and memorial of its founder with two feasts: the p rincipal feast, 5 August, held on the vigil of his death, and the translation, 24 May, celebrating the transfer of his relics on that date in 1233, during which a miraculous fragrance ( odor mirificus ) and many healings occurred, speeding along Dominic’s ca nonization, which occurred on 3 July 1234. The two offices for these feasts developed in stages similar to those of the liturgy of the Rite to which they belonged. In addition to a study of these developments, the present dissertation examines the proper chants of the offices and presents the results in commentaries on each item. This analysis reveals that the texts were carefully constructed, with attention to narrative continuity based on Dominic’s early vitae , allusion to biblical and patristic sources, and the creation of striking poetic effects.
