Heretical Networks between East and West: The Case of the Fraticelli NICKIPHOROS I. TSOUGARAKIS Abstract: This article explores the links between the Franciscan heresy of the Fraticelli and the Latin territories of Greece, between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. It argues that the early involvement of Franciscan dissidents, like Angelo Clareno, with the lands of Latin Romania played an important role in the development of the Franciscan movement of dissent, on the one hand by allowing its enemies to associate them with the disobedient Greek Church and on the other by establishing safe havens where the dissidents were relatively safe from the persecution of the Inquisition and whence they were also able to send missionaries back to Italy to revive the movement there. In doing so, the article reviews all the known information about Fraticelli communities in Greece, and discovers two hitherto unknown references, proving that the sect continued to exist in Greece during the Ottoman period, thus outlasting the Fraticelli communities of Italy. BONAVENTURE AS MINISTER GENERAL Dominic V. Monti On 2 February 1257, at a chapter of the Order of Friars Minor held in Rome, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio was unanimously elected its minister general. This was at the suggestion of his predecessor, John of Parma. Bonaven- ture would then not hand over the reins of government until June 1274, at a chapter held in conjunction with the Second Council of Lyons. In the interim, he had presided over five other general chapters, which had endorsed his leadership and renewed his mandate. His seventeen-year term of office was far longer than any of his predecessors or any of his successors for more than a century. It was not simply the sheer length of Bonaventure’s tenure, however, that made it significant: it was the fact that it occurred at a critical juncture in Franciscan history, as the Lesser Brothers were struggling to formulate a clear self-understanding of their role in church and society.1 As minister general, Bonaventure played a truly singular role in this process: his policies and writings did much to define an identity for his brotherhood that would stamp it decisively for generations.2 1 For a general introduction to and translation of Bonaventure’s writings as general minister, see Dominic V. I spoke it out loud without shame because In such an encounter, Speaking our name, When I want to renounce it for Him, Is like speaking the name of God.1 Most female monastic rules include a description of a ceremony for taking the veil: "Receiving the Habit," "Offering the Habit," "Ceremony for Veiling and Profession" – the variety of descriptions emphasizes the solemnity of a celebration in which postulants enter into a new estate. This essay analyzes both the symbolic and material aspects of this moment in which identity is transformed. Taking the veil is a rite of passage whose every aspect, including both gesture and speech, has been carefully formalized. This essay focuses first on the ceremony's script, in which clothing draws together the postulant, her family and friends, and the monastic community that welcomes her. FROM THE CENTER 1 April 2020 A Newsletter for Friends and Benefactors of Saint Benedict Center across the Country Sister Pia-Marie, Novice Lent 2020 has been an unusual time for everyone, in the Church and in the world! The unprecedented situation created by the coronavirus crisis has touched all of our lives. But Holy Mother Church will always remain close to her children despite the closing of the churches. The lenten liturgy reminds us all to keep our eyes on the eternal goal. Just like a true mother, when anxiety is at its height, she provides us with beautiful thoughts to meditate on… this was the case on Laetare Sunday 2020, when Julia O’Leary was accepted as a Novice of the Sisters, Slaves of the Im- Left: Sister Pia- Marie cuts the cake in celebration as Sister Katherine Maria, Sister Superior, and Sister Christopher Margaret, Prioress stand by. Julia O’Leary receives the habit of a novice and her new name of Sister Pia-Marie! maculate Heart of Mary. Laetare! Rejoice! Even though all public Masses were cancelled, the MICM religious and the O’Leary family gathered in the small convent chapel, called “Gate of Heaven,” to witness this young woman ask for the habit of a novice. What a beautiful contrast to the worries of the world! Julia O’Leary, the third of Christa & Denis O’Leary’s five children, was raised in Texas. She and her sisters became acquainted with the Sisters through the Morn- ing Star Camp program, and travelled to attend for many years. -
Who Are the Secular Franciscans, and What Do They Do?
Who are the Secular Franciscans, and what do they do? The Secular Franciscan Order is a vocation, a Way of Life approved by the Church, for men and women, married or single, who are called to take an active part in the mission of Christ to bring "the good news of salvation" to the world. Secular Franciscans commit themselves to a life in Christ calling for a positive effort to promote Gospel attitudes among their contemporaries. They are united with each other in communities, through which they develop a sense of direction according to the Gospel spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi. FRANCIS, the saint known and loved the world over, was born at Assisi, central Italy, in the year 1181, the son of a wealthy merchant. He died there in 1226, after a life in Christ that earned him the title Poverelo (little poor man). As a youth, Francis had a series of powerful incidents of conversion, including a vision in which Jesus told him to "rebuild my church, for it is falling into ruin." He found Jesus in the poor and suffering, especially the lepers. He and his followers became visible exemplars of a literal Christian life. In the words of Pope Pius XI, "So lifelike and strikingly did the image of Jesus Christ and the Gospel manner of life shine forth in Francis, that he appeared to his contemporaries almost as though he were the Risen Christ." Saint Francis attained this marvelous ideal by making the holy Gospel, in every detail, the rule and standard of his life. -
