THE TERMS of this Institution are specially adapted to the case of Family Settlements, where it is important to secure a competent provision of definite amount from the first, at the smallest present outlay. It is the only Office in which the advantages of Mutual Assurance can be obtained in combination with Moderate Premiums. Instead of charging rates admittedly higher than are necessary, and afterwards returning the excess, or a portion of it, in the shape of periodical Bonuses, it gives, from the first, as large an assurance as the Premiums will with perfect safety bear, reserving the Whole Surplus for those Members who have lived long enough to secure the common Fund from loss on account of their individual assurances. A Pohcy for £1200 to £1250, with prospect of considerable addi- tions to those who come to share in the reserved Profits, may thus, at most ages, be had for the Premium elsewhere charged to assure £1000 only. Policies for £1000 have already been increased to £1400, £1600, and even to £1800. FINANCIAL PROGRESS AND POSITION. Yaluable information as to the Financial Progress and Position of the various Offices, may be obtained from the " Life Insurance Chart," compiled from official documents. On the facts there shown, no Office gives evidence of greater progress and stability than the Scottish Provident Institution. In regard to Accumulated Funds, which now exceed £1,850,000 the comparison is especially gratifying. Notwithstanding its low rates, no Office of equal age has so large a Fund, or shows so large an increase from year to year. The Publishers of the Post Office Kilmarnock Directory have to apologise to their Subscribers for the delay which has taken place in its pubHcation. This has chiefly arisen from the considerable amount of new information furnished, both for town and country. The Publishers hope that any inconvenience or annoyance caused by the delay, will be more than made up for by the extra information given, and that the result of their labours, on the whole, may meet the approval of their Subscribers, and the commercial public in general. They have also to express their thanks to the many friends who have kindly furnished them with information. The PubKshers would also beg to announce that it is their intention to publish the Directory every Two years in future, should they receive sufficient encouragement. As the Directory has now been wrought into form (after the model of the Glasgow Directory), the Publishers hope that their efforts to meet, by a regular publication of their book, a want long felt in Kilmarnock, will be rewarded by an increased number of Subscribers and Advertisers. Welsh pefr, „radiant, beautiful‟), also found at several other places in eastern Scotland as far south as the Peffer Burns and Peffermill in Lothian, as well as Peover in Cheshire.     The Trinitarian Ecclesiology of Thomas F. Torrance Kate Helen Dugdale Submitted to fulfil the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, November 2016. 1 2 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that rather than focusing on the Church as an institution, social grouping, or volunteer society, the study of ecclesiology must begin with a robust investigation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Utilising the work of Thomas F. Torrance, it proposes that the Church is to be understood as an empirical community in space and time that is primarily shaped by the perichoretic communion of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, revealed by the economic work of the Son and the Spirit. The Church’s historical existence is thus subordinate to the Church’s relation to the Triune God, which is why the doctrine of the Trinity is assigned a regulative influence in Torrance’s work. This does not exclude the essential nature of other doctrines, but gives pre-eminence to the doctrine of the Trinity as the foundational article for ecclesiology. The methodology of this thesis is one of constructive analysis, involving a critical and constructive appreciation of Torrance’s work, and then exploring how further dialogue with Torrance’s work can be fruitfully undertaken. Part A (Chapters 1-5) focuses on the theological architectonics of Torrance’s ecclesiology, emphasising that the doctrine of the Trinity has precedence over ecclesiology. While the doctrine of the Church is the immediate object of our consideration, we cannot begin by considering the Church as a spatiotemporal institution, but rather must look ‘through the Church’ to find its dimension of depth, which is the Holy Trinity.
