Download date:23 Sep 2021 Al sinds het verschijnen van Pim Muliers klassieker Athletiek en Voetbal (1894) schrijft de vaderlandse (sport)geschiedeniscanon voor dat er voor het eerst gevoetbald werd in Haarlem (‘in den winter van 1879-80’), Amsterdam (1882-1883), Den Haag (1883) en Enschede (1885). Jan Luitzen Deze studie van Jan Luitzen corrigeert dat beeld drastisch, aan de hand van de geschiedenis van de protestants-christelijke kostschool Noorthey (1820-1882) voor elitejongens in Veur (Zuid- Holland). Luitzen biedt bewijs voor de start in Nederland van cricket en hockey vanaf 1845 en van association-football vanaf 1854, met een concrete bewijsbrief van een kostschoolleerling Jan Luitzen voor een partijtje voetbal op 3 oktober 1864, op de speelweide bij Noorthey. Een passage uit deze van een datum voorziene brief van de 13-jarige Jan Cornelis Gülcher luidt als volgt: ‘Nu zal ik U eens vertellen wat er op Maandag geschied is. Toen in het begin van het eerste speeluur kwam de Engelsche meester naar mij toe en zeide: “We play foot-ball today.” […] Dit spel is heel goed als het koud is, daar men een groote gommelestieke bal, die met leder omwonden is en bijna 3 palm middenlijn [= ongeveer 30 centimeter] heeft, moet voort- schoppen, doch bij het eerste spel brak de bal en nu moet hij naar Londen om gemaakt te worden. Intusschen spelen wij nu een ander spel, gandi [hockey] genaamd, dat bijna het- zelfde is maar waarbij men een gewone bal met stokken moet voortslaan.’ In zijn cultuurhistorische onderzoek ontzenuwt Luitzen meerdere hardnekkige mythes. Om er Vivat! Vivat Noorthey! maar één te noemen: de vermeende start van H.F.C. in 1879. David van Lennep en Pim Mulier begonnen in het voorjaar van 1881 met hun cricketclubje Rood en Zwart, schakelden in het late najaar van 1881 over van cricket op rugby en in 1882/1883 – omgedoopt tot Haarlemsche Football Club – op association-voetbal. Kortom: Vivat! Vivat Noorthey! is een sporthistorische must-read. Jan Luitzen is werkzaam bij de opleiding Sportkunde (HvA) – track Sport, Management & Ondernemen – in Amsterdam. Hij publiceer- de romans, sport(woorden)boeken en artikelen, onder meer in The International Journal of the History of Sport, De Moderne Tijd, Ex Tempore, Soccer & Society, Journal of Olympic History, Jaarboek van de Geschied- en Oudheidkundige Kring ‘De Oranjeboom’, Achilles, de SPORTWERELD, Hard gras en De Muur. Samen met Wim Zonneveld schreef hij de studies Kicksen en wickets. Van cricket naar voetbal in Nederland 1845-1888 (special Hard gras, 2017) en Hoe voetbal verscheen in Nederland. Rood en Wit, H.F.C., H.V.V. en hun kornuiten, 1880-1910 (special de SPORTWERELD, 2018). Op 23 november 2020 – zijn 60e verjaardag – promoveerde taalkundige Luitzen als historicus aan de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen op het proefschrift Engelsch moest het zijn. Een cultuurhistorische analyse van de introductie van cricket, voetbal en lawntennis in Nederland en de rol daarbij van jongenskostschool Noorthey en haar alumni, 1820-1886. However, it is safe to say that with my qualities such a career will always stay a dream. My interest in football is still very much present and therefore I am pleased to have gotten the possibility to combine football and economics. Sport and particularly football (in Europe) generates emotion. This emotion and high level of involvement triggers economists to investigate sport economics, as the real economic impact of sport is minimal. This level of attachment has also been my inspiration. The financial crisis and the mismanagement of many Dutch professional football teams have created substantial financial problems in Dutch professional football. This year FC Haarlem, VV Veendam went bankrupt, while Willem II, NAC Breda, Feyenoord, Fortuna Sittard, MVV and other were facing financial deficits. Those developments show the relevance and good timing of my research. Local governments are more frequently requested to financially support these football teams. As football teams do not contribute significantly in direct economic figures, intangible assets are often used by municipality leaders when explaining financial help paid by tax money.     Sports participation in the European Union: trends and differences The overall level of sports participation in the EU is amazingly high • Of all European Union citizens 60% takes part in sport or exercise every now and then (271 million people), with walking, cycling, swimming and fitness as most popular sports. • All over the EU, sport represents a flourishing club life, with 700,000 sport clubs and about 70 million club members. In this context, football, tennis, swimming, tennis, golf, gymnastics, basketball, and volleyball are practiced most of all sports. • The voluntary participation of citizens in the social sector is nowhere as extensive as in sports. • The fitness centre has become nearly as popular as the sport club. • This all adds to the social and health function of sport in the European Union. However, once the frequency norm is raised, sports participation drops considerably • 49% of all European citizens participate in sports at least once a month; 38% at least once a week; and 17% at least three times a week (which has been recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine to improve fitness). Moreover, there are structural differences and inequalities in sports participation. Both between the member states… • There are many differences in the nature and scope of sports participation between the member states of the European Union. • The highest proportion of the population takes part in exercise and sport in the Scandinavian member states, followed by the western and central European countries. There is a far lower level of sport participation in the southern European member states. • There is a difference of 62 (!) percentage points between the nations with the smallest (Finland) and biggest part (Portugal) of the population that never exercises or plays sport.
