Patrick Lang's Column
Patrick Lang’s Column 11th December 2019 LA «SQUADRA ROSA» C’È! THE STRONG ITALIAN TEAM! The winners’ list of the numerous World Cup stages organized in Sestriere since 1967 – many part being of in the prestigious Arlberg-Kandahar “Classic” – really is impressive… Most of the stars and “Skiing Legends” from the 1960s until 2016 excelled on the various slopes of the Vialattea which also hosted thrilling medal events back in 1997 (FIS World Championships) and 2006 (Olympics), without forgetting the exciting World Cup Finals in 2004! Among the winners on the women’s tour one can find the name of two Italian aces - Giustina Demetz who enjoyed a memorable win in downhill in March 1967 (sharing first place with France’s exceptional Marielle Goitschel) while Maria Rosa Quario won a slalom later on in 1983! In January 2020, a group of specialists of the “Squadra Rosa” will surely be fighting hard to claim the first Italian victory in a World Cup giant slalom race on the challenging G. Agnelli course, 23 years after the gold medal triumphs of Deborah Compagnoni in both tech events of the FIS World Championships. Interestingly enough, there are several Italian candidates ready to strike as shown by the results of the first competitions held in Austria and North America, where four Italian champions celebrated a brilliant victory and several podium finishes in three different specialties – giant slalom, downhill and Super-G. At Killington, 23-year-old Marta Bassino enjoyed her maiden World Cup victory after two blistering runs. She beat all the -

ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2021 SPORTS 14 Pinturault wins giant slalom Goggia races to dominating win in World Cup downhill ADELBODEN, Switzerla- nd, Jan 9, (AP): Alexis Pinturault won a World Cup giant slalom for a sec- ond straight day on the sto- ried Adelboden hill on Saturday, topping his superb performance from Friday. Pinturault defied fast-fading light in the second run to post a huge winning margin of 1.26 sec- onds over Filip Zubcic, the runner- up on back-to-back days. First-run leader Loic Meillard could not give Switzerland its first win since 2008 in its classic giant slalom. A big error early in his run left him 1.65 back in third place. Pinturault’s third straight giant sla- lom victory was a 33rd career win in World Cup races, matching American great Bode Miller in ninth place on the men’s all-time list. Pinturault seized the lead in the sea- son-long giant slalom standings from home favorite Marco Odermatt, who placed fourth, 1.67 back. SKIIING The Frenchman also extended his lead in the World Cup overall points race ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the defending champion. Kilde’s results - fifth place, after fourth on Friday – were impressive for the speed race specialist. Pinturault’s wire-to-wire win Friday had also been by more than a second, though he noted the light was more challenging Saturday. At Adelboden, the slope darkens quickly after the sunshine slips behind the mountains around 2 pm when the leaders start their second run. -

Ledecká Takes First Alpine Skiing World Cup Victory
Ledecká takes first alpine skiing World Cup victory Czech snowboard specialist beats odds to win on skis in Lake Louise downhill. A shock Super-G Olympic champion in Pyeongchang in 2018, Ester Ledecká proved she's far more than a one-hit wonder when she dominated the first downhill of the 2019-2020 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Lake Louise, Canada on Friday. The Czech snowboard specialist made the best of the tricky weather conditions to win ahead of the last two world championship downhill silver medallists, Corinne Suter of Switzerland and Austria’s Stephanie Venier. Here is all you need to know: - Starting with bib 26, Ledecká won in 1:31.87, beating 2019 world championship runner-up Corinne Suter by 0.35s. Austria’s Stephanie Venier, second in the 2017 downhill worlds, was third, 0.45s behind. - Ledecká, winner of 16 snowboard World Cup races and twice a snowboard world champion, shocked the alpine skiing world at the 2018 Olympics when she won the Super-G gold medal ahead of all the favourites. She also won the snowboard parallel slalom Olympic title, becoming the first athlete crowned in both alpine ski and snowboard events. - The 24-year-old Prague native’s previous best alpine skiing World Cup result was seventh in a downhill on the same course two years ago. - Ledecká is also the first Czech skier to win a World Cup downhill. Czechoslovakia’s Jana Soltysova won a downhill in Altenmarkt in 1980, but she was born in Slovakia. - Winner of the Lake Louise downhill two years ago, American Mikaela Shiffrin was 10thand took her lead in the overall World Cup standings to 366 points, ahead of Switzerland’s Michelle Gisin on 160. -
