We were able to provide over 16.1 million meals to 182,900 recipients through our network of food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, mobile pantry, after school and BackPack programs. Thanks to you, thousands of children, families and seniors experiencing hunger were able to receive nutritious food to meet their most basic human need. Thanks to you, these individuals were helped at times when they were facing pressing life challenges, including homelessness, unemployment, underemployment or poverty. In the following pages, you will find information that highlights the transformational impact of our programs and services during the last fiscal year, thanks to you. As we work together to fulfill our mission of “leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our community,” please know that you are the reason we are able to affect so many lives.     Tidewater Council welcomes Girls into Scouting The 365 days from February 2018 to 2019 were arguably the most significant span since Scouting came to the United States in 1910. The Boy Scouts of America made history on May 2 last year by unveiling the new “Scout Me In” campaign that features girls, as well as boys, ages 5-10 in our iconic Cub Scout program for the first time. This change allowed all families to participate in Cub Scouts, a program renowned for character-building fun and adventure. Through adven- tures big and small, Scouting embraces the outdoors and helping our communities through service projects, STEM development, and building confidence through our full range of activities. Locally, girls have been active since February 2018 as members of Cub Scout Pack 374 in Virginia Beach. As part of an early adopter program for Cub Scouts, Pack 374 established a Wolf (2nd grade) and Bear (3rd grade) Den for girls. Families can now choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts. Each Cub Scout den (usually 4 to 8 youth) is single gender — all boys or all girls. These dens make up Cub Scout packs, which can include any combination of all-boy or all-girl dens. This unique approach allows the organization to maintain the integrity of the single-gender model while also meeting the needs of today’s families. Girls must complete the same requirements as boys to advance through the Cub Scout ranks and are participating in the same events as the boys in Cub Scouting, including hikes, model rocket derby, carpentry, veterinarian for a day, camping and a host of other outdoor and civic service activities.

Yeager, Director of Research, Louisiana State University Associate Professor Marcus Keller Assistant Professor Alain Fresco Abstract This dissertation shows how Marguerite Triaire, Trinh Thuc Oanh, Ly Thu Ho and Linda Lê, four women writers of French expression, counter the Orientalist stereotypes propagated in colonial literature and media, and produce knowledge about the Vietnamese Other in their works. Their work is part of what is known today as Vietnamese Francophone literature (originally known as Vietnamese literature of French expression during the colonial period). My theoretical framework is necessarily hybrid, reflecting the syncretic nature of the Vietnamese Francophone literary production, Vietnamese and French. My work covers Edward Said’s Orientalism, the postcolonial feminism of Gayatri Spivak, Sara Suleri, Chandra Mohanty, and Rey Chow and the Western postcolonial theories of Frantz Fanon, Albert Memmi, Homi Bhabha, as well as specialists in the field such as Jack Yeager, Nathalie Nguyen, Leslie Barnes, Tess Do, Eugène Pujarniscle and Louis Malleret. I also rely mostly on primary sources for the early women writers given the scarcity of secondary sources on their works. In this dissertation Orientalism is deployed as a model in the study of Vietnam as the Other.
