2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL A MESSAGE TO TECH SUPPORTERS This is a very exciting time for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. We look forward to a season that will bring in new faces and new challenges. It should be a season of excitement and of improvement. The thing I have noticed about this group through the summer and the preseason is their willingness to work. I stated often last season that I never had to coach effort and this season, that same spirit has been evident since day one. This group of players shows up ready to do their best, regardless of whether it’s on the court, in the weight room or in the classroom. They are always ready to take a step forward. During the last year, we have made very substantial strides in shaping this program into a group that makes this University proud. We have become more involved in campus and community projects and have comported ourselves in a manner expected of Virginia Tech students and student-athletes. We strive to make this team YOUR team. It has meant so much to the team and me that you stop us on the street, in restaurants and out in public and greet us all so warmly. I believe this partnership has gotten off to a wonderful start and will only grow stronger. The season will begin on Nov. 9 and we will need each and every one of you in Cassell Coliseum, supporting this team. -

Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch. -

Paranoid self-talk as dichotomous monologue to move the crowd. Part of this has to do with the deep cuts and scratches in my mind. Recorded and remixed across DNA double helixes. Structurally split. Generationally divided. A style and family history built on breaking down. Evidence of how ill I am. And then there’s the matter of skin. The material concerns of cultural cross-fertilization. Itching to plant seeds where the grass is always greener. Color collaborations and appropriations. Writing white/out with black art ink. Distinctions dangerously hidden behind backbeats or shamelessly displayed front and center for familiar-feeling consumption. -
Between Music and Sub-Culture: Analysis of Manea and Hip-Hop in Romania
BETWEEN MUSIC AND SUB-CULTURE: ANALYSIS OF MANEA AND HIP-HOP IN ROMANIA -Anca Cretu- Post-1989 Romania is increasingly defined by the search for cultural identity and the clash of cultures. The communist regime of 1944-1989 opposed extraneous invasive elements, whether political, economic, or even cultural. Thus, people became more attached to what they considered to be “their own,” particularly in the cultural sphere. This broad trend is reflected in terms of post- 1989 attitudes in recording music. Among the issues relevant to the cultural clashes is the way in which a post-communist popular culture overcomes important nationalistic boundaries. Nowadays, Romania searches for its cultural identity in a particular way, torn between developing nationalistic spirit and the need for western novelty. These two trends are the result of such transformations such as economic globalization, revolutions in technology, and the opening of markets i — one of the most accessible being the audiovisual market. It is simultaneously the most prominent forum for the expression of a cultural identity, shaping the image of life styles, a relatively new concept for the Romanian people. In the context of accession to the EU, there is a growing interest and focus on the audiovisual, as a way of battling Americanization. For many people of the former eastern bloc, this term connotes sexuality, violence, and the ruin of “Europeanness.” ii As with most European youth, Romanian teens are great media consumers, increasingly interested in keeping themselves updated with products from around the world. For them, music is an important way of expression in the search for personal identity. -

Hip-Hop in Romania (1992-2008)
Michaela PRAISLER ISSN 2029-4182 Daniela ŞORCARU GRUPĖS IR APLINKOS: 2010.2 Isabela MERILĂ Dunărea de Jos University of Galaţi Hip-Hop in Romania (1992-2008) Abstract The presented report includes an overview of the political and social situation of post-Communist Romania from the viewpoint of establishing the emergence and development of hip-hop as a ‘taste’ subculture. As there were very few detectable traces of the specific literature we needed in Romanian, our pioneering work started with adapting foreign literature in the field to the Romanian realities we faced. The results of our research are quantified, discussed and concluded complete with references and the state-of-the-art. Keywords: hip-hop, subculture, post-Communist Romania Introduction After 1989, in the post-Communist era, the academic research in Eastern Europe, Romania included, opened up to the new problems posed by the mechanisms of cultural change. Public recognition of decentring margins and of oppositional forces to mainstream culture gradually brought about an increased interest in subcultures (originated in terms of region, ethnicity, class, religion or ‘taste’). An analysis of such, it was felt, would contribute to a better understanding of the inner workings of the local and global state of affairs, despite the neuralgic points being tackled. ‘Taste’ subcultures were the last to gain visibility and to form a subject for scholarly investigation. This explains the scarcity of resources in the field and the necessity of giving more attention to this otherwise prominent phenomenon. The particular case of Romanian hip-hop and its novel discourse was made the object of our research within the Sixth Framework Project, Society and Lifestyles. -
