They are inspired by/similar to those used by other adaptive sporting events and organizations including but not limited to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) or the Invictus Games Foundation; however, they are separate, distinct, and ARE NOT under the purview of/oversight of those organizations. They are governed by the US Services’ Wounded Warrior (W2) Program Directors, managed by the US Services’ W2 Adaptive Sports Program Leads and Warrior Games Classification Committee, and reviewed/published by the Warrior Games Sports Director. The DOD Warrior Games Sport Classifications are driven by the collected Uniformed Services athletes’ varied wounds, injuries, or illnesses they have incurred while in the service of this country. The DOD Warrior Games Classification Handbook has been created exclusively for use by the DOD Warrior Games Classification Committee (WGCC), the collected Service Teams’ Athlete Classification Personnel, and other members of the DOD Warrior Games Operational and Support Staff as an official companion reference to the DOD Warrior Games Rules and Regulations Handbook. - 1 - DOD Warrior Games Sport Classification Handbook ARCHERY CLASSIFICATION 1 OPEN Classification 1.1 Athletes may be classified into one of two categories; OPEN Compound or OPEN Recurve. 1.2 OPEN athletes may have some form of impairment in their arms, legs, or balance/stability challenges. 1.3 OPEN athletes shoot standing or resting on a stool as determined by their impairments. 1.4 OPEN athletes may use adaptive arrow release mechanisms to include but not limited to mouth tab or shoulder release systems. 1.5 OPEN athletes may be authorized an assistant. 2 SEATED Classification 2.1 Athletes may be classified into one of two categories; SEATED Compound or SEATED Recurve. 2.2 SEATED athletes have some form of impairment in their legs and/or spine and require a wheelchair or other assistive device as a primary means of mobility. 2.3 SEATED athletes shoot from a fixed/folding chair or a wheelchair as determined by their impairments. 2.4 SEATED athletes may use adaptive arrow release mechanisms to include but not limited to mouth tab or shoulder release systems. 2.5 SEATED athletes may be authorized an assistant. 3 VI Archery Classification 3.1 VI Archery athletes have a vision impairment. 3.2 VI Archery athletes must wear blindfolds or black-out glasses and use tactile sight systems. 3.3 VI Archery athletes will assume a standing or seated firing position based upon their functional capabilities and/or impairments found within the above Archery classifications and adhere to all authorizations and restrictions defined within them. 3.4 All VI Archery athletes (both Compound and VI Recurve) compete against one another; they do not compete against athletes in the OPEN and SEATED classifications. 3.5 VI Archery athletes may use adaptive arrow release mechanisms to include but not limited to mouth tab or shoulder release systems. 3.6 VI Archery athletes are authorized an assistant/loader.
