System continuity at both a regional and local level was reviewed, including limited opportunities for east-west travel crossing the Wichita Valley Center Floodway commonly referred to as the “Big Ditch”. The system needs will take into account the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) existing and proposed roadway system, including the Northwest Bypass, potential transportation improvements to be defined through the on-going South Area Transportation Study as well as any improvements completed or proposed by City or County offices. Access to regionally significant land uses in the immediate vicinity were considered including Towne West Mall, Mid-Continent Airport, Dugan Business area and several aviation manufacturers. The MPO planning area, Sedgwick County, and the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area, each of which has a unique boundary, are referenced in the following sections of this report.
