Immaculate Heart of Mary / John Paul II and Missions Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 MEDITATION IHM / JP II February 17, 2019 † 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Office What an audience has in today’s Gospel! “A great crowd of his 353 South Pagosa Boulevard disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Pagosa Springs, CO 81147 and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.” Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All Office Hours: of these people had something in common. was someone to be bargained Mon.–Thurs. 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Friday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. “Woe to you who are rich? who are Phones: filled now? who laugh? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are Pope John Paul II (970) 731-5744 poor? you who are now hungry? when people hate you and when they Fax (970) 731-2151 exclude you and insult you.” Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as “woe” are states of life email: [email protected] we often strive for, and “blessed” are the states we work hard to avoid! www.popejohnpauliichurch.org Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the Father Kenny Udumka, Pastor typical structures of power and privilege. The word “now” appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well “now,” that’s beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal . If you’re struggling “now,” that’s not an indication that God has forgotten you or that –– in light of eternity –– you’re worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you’re enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, joy in the future. Pope John Paul II This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and 353 South Pagosa Blvd. thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His and grace?

4IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY / POPE JOHN PAUL II • PAGOSA SPRINGS, CO SAINT PARISH Feast Day: February 23 COUNCIL Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, of Saint Rev. Kenny Udumka, Pastor Deacon Pat McKenzie and friend of Saint Ignatius of Juanita Archuleta Antioch, was a revered Christian leader during Mary Jo Coulehan the first half of the second century. Chris Gallegos Saint Ignatius, on his way to to be Ron Halvorson martyred, visited Polycarp at Smyrna, and later Doug Purcell Bernie Schuchart at Troas wrote him a personal letter. The Asia Gene Tautges Minor Churches recognized Polycarp’s leadership by choosing him as a representative to discuss MISSION with the date of the Easter celebration in Rome—a major controversy in the MAYORDOMOS early Church. St. Francis Floriann Gallegos Only one of the many letters written by 970-883-2448 Polycarp has been preserved, the one he wrote to St. James the Church of Philippi in Macedonia. Ben and Lupita Gallegos 970-264-2319 At 86, Polycarp was led into the crowded Smyrna stadium to be burned alive. St. The flames did not harm him and he was finally killed by a dagger. The Carrie Espinosa centurion ordered the saint’s body burned. The “Acts” of Polycarp’s 946-3138 Chromo Mission Station martyrdom are the earliest preserved, fully reliable account of a Christian Sandy Bramwell martyr’s death. He died in 155. 970-264-5959 Polycarp was recognized as a Christian leader by all Asia Minor Christians—a strong fortress of faith and loyalty to Jesus Christ. His own strength emerged from his trust in God, even when events contradicted this trust. Living among pagans and under a government opposed to the new religion, he led and fed his flock. Like the Good Shepherd, he laid down his life for his sheep and kept them from more persecution in Smyrna. He summarized his trust in God just before he died: “Father… I bless Thee, for Food Pantry currently needs having made me worthy of the day and the hour…” (Acts of Martyrdom, pasta and pasta sauce. Chapter 14). Saint Polycarp is the of: Earaches and Dysentery Thank you for your continued generosity!
