They have also played at various Vintagerocknrollretrosoul hot spots in London including Buzzsaw Joint, Passing Clouds, The Nitty Gritty and are regulars at DJ Andy Smith’s Jam up Twist night. On their travels they have also played at various festivals including Glastonbury, Bandada and Castlepalooza. sal p Salvatore Principato (Sal P.) is best known as the vocalist and per- cussionist of seminal NYC minimalist-funk band Liquid Liquid, but his over three-decade career actually spans a wide variety of genres. Liquid Liquid (Scott Hartley, Richard McGuire, Salvatore Principato, Dennis Young) recorded and released four EPs for 99 Records: Li- quid Liquid, Successive Reflexes (both 1981), and Optimo (1983). The group’s successes included club hits such as Cavern, Bellhead and Optimo, in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. Cavern became the basis of Grandmaster Flash’s rap classic, White Lines (Don’t Do It). The band released one final EP for 99 Records Dig We Must before both label and group disbanded in 1984. Immediately following, Principato along with Ken “Man” Caldei- ra formed the industrial-dub outfitFist of Facts, they toured Europe and released a 12-inch EP Fugitive Vesco in 1988 with Helvete Un- derground Records (Switzerland). Recently Claremont 56 (London) released a limited edition EP of formerly unreleased Fist Of Facts material. In the early 1990’s, Principato began producing words-and-music shows in downtown New York clubs and galleries, as well as an an- nual series of free outdoor shows on the piers on the Hudson River and a public access cable TV program called Voices/Vision based on these productions. He played drums with a rock band Liki Outhaus, collaborated with the late Zen Guitar author Phil Toshio Sudo in the experimental music project Avant Garbage, and also runs a downtown rehearsal studio collective. From the late 90’s to the mid-00’s, he produced many African and Caribbean music concerts under the “Univer-SAL” banner in New York City. Sal P.’s DJ efforts are as varied as his other musical projects and he has championed the turntables at venues in the U.S., Europe, South Africa and Brazil and is known for his blend of Afro-Latin, Rare Groove, and deep disco tracks. 2 Additionally, he has worked on remixes for various artists and labels around the world, and has collabo- rated with musicians and producers such as Dennis Young, Brennan Green, Dennis Citizen Kane, and the Neurotic Drum Band. He has also worked with Kaos, the Berlin-based DJ and producer, with Ectomorph’s BMG from Detroit and with Paul Murphy from Claremont 56 on his musical project, Bison. On May 19, 2008, Domino Records released a reissue of Liquid Liquid’s first three records along with previously unreleased bonus tracks in a newly designed package. Liquid Liquid occasionally reform to play a series of shows. From their initial reunion at The Knitting Fac- tory (Manhattan) in 2003, the band had appeared at Optimo (Glasgow), DEMF (Detroit), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Domino Records 10th Anniversary at The Barbican (London), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), with the latest series of shows sharing the stage with LCD Soundsystem at Terminal 5 and concluding at Madison Square Garden (New York City). His cultural concerns include vegan cooking (along with hosting dinners that instruct in vegan food preparation), photography, graphic design and all topics political in perspective. Salvatore Principato was born on October 6, 1957 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. After high school, he moved to San Francisco where he started playing music, making short films, and writing poetry. In 1979, Principato returned to the East Coast moving to New York City, where he reunited with friends Richard McGuire and Scott Hartley, joining the group Liquid Idiot. a voir aussi sal p (avec andy Votel) ve 13 sept 23h à la gravière inFOS PRATIQUes lieU central, Maison coMMUnale de Prix unique CHF 10 plainpalais billetterie Rue de Carouge 52 www.batie.ch - [email protected] 1205 Genève Dès le 21 août : Maison Communale de Plainpalais Rue de Carouge 52 1205 Genève sUr www.batie.ch contact presse photos, vidéos et autres informations en lien Sarah Margot Calame / Camille Dubois avec le spectacle [email protected] +4122 908 69 52 +4177 423 36 30 sUr www.batie.ch/presse des photos libres de droit, pour publication médias sont à télécharger sur www.batie.ch/presse 3.

  • Outside Mute? Ut, No Wave and Blast First
Mute Records Outside Mute? Ut, No Wave and Blast First 9 Outside Mute? Ut, No Wave and Blast First Ieuan Franklin Introduction: Margins This chapter focuses on the all-female no wave band Ut – founded in New York in 1978 by Jacqui Ham, Nina Canal and Sally Young and relocated to London in 1980 – and the similarly uncompromising British independent label Blast First (a sub-label of Mute), to which Ut were signed between 1986 and 1989. Firstly, a proviso – it does not promise to be a comprehensive biography or profile of either the band or label, although I hope to offer some new insights about both. I will not have much scope to discuss the band’s recorded output – here I defer to those fanzine writers and music critics, such as Elizabeth Johnson, who have brilliantly articulated the unusual nature of the band’s sound, both in concert and on record: For me, Ut represent one of the most intense musical experiences in the known universe. Are you ready to have your head trip with infinite velocity, sheer and primal ferocity? … To consider their music a random clang of guitars, erratic rhythms, and screamingly abstract vocals is to commit exorcism on their cohesive dark-sided collage. (‘50,000 Reasons’ n.d.) This chapter will instead seek to give a detailed sense of the marginality of Ut in the UK context of being caught between record label disinterest, and a weekly music press that was sometimes guilty of belittling or objectifying female musicians (Reddington 2012: 53). It will explore the relationships of Ut, the band’s own label Out Records and Blast First with their ‘parent’ labels Rough Trade and Mute.

  • The 10 Best Vinyl Reissues of 2016 So Far
The 10 best vinyl reissues of 2016 so far thevinylfactory.com /features/the-10-best-vinyl-reissues-of-2016-so-far/ By Amar Ediriwira 7/6/2016 A half-time scan of this year’s finest reissues. As much as we delight in the discovery of new music – look out for that roundup on Friday – the staggering amount of archival releases appearing on shelves is simply impossible to ignore. Whether it’s neglected, forgotten or misunderstood material, there’s a fleet of reissue labels and tireless collectors rewriting the history books on a weekly basis. So it’s only fair to give reissues their own mid-term list. We’ve worked though the stacks to pick ten of the best. With so much on offer, it wasn’t an easy task and as ever, we’ve had to leave out a few favourites to fit the brief. Some ground rules before we begin: included here are both compilations and retrospectives, as well as straight up reissues; and in choosing our ten we’ve spread ourselves across a broad range of genres and labels. 1/12 TCP TCP (Disco Halal) Listen / Buy Some reissues live and die by their rarity, others by their quality and a select few just have both. Originally released in 1984, Tony Cary Project’s self-titled LP has bubbled away on wantlists for years, an oddball outlier on the Balearic scene that’s far more ambitious than the numerous cosmic disco reissues appearing at the moment. Musically, TCP is a album of spacious, kraut-ish grooves with a dab of Eastern flair that will speak to fans of YMO and the early ‘80s soundtrack scene, and testament to young Berlin label Disco Halal, who can’t put a foot wrong right now.
