Album of the Week: Deerhoof's La Isla Bonita
Album Of The Week: Deerhoof’s La Isla Bonita Believe it or not, there are a few bands that have been around for a while that I have yet to take a dive into. One of those bands are San Francisco noise pop punk act Deerhoof, and their new album La Isla Bonita has shown me exactly what I’ve been missing. One of those bands that have managed to stick around since the mid-90s, the variety of sounds and dimensions in each track off of the album is jaw dropping. One moment it sounds like a psychedelic j- pop song and then unpredictably these crunchy rigid guitars come in and obliterate everything. So many influences and styles being showcased in one sound, Deerhoof’s new release is simply amazing with its stunning originality. The album was produced by former music journalist & ex-Mr. Dream drummer Nick Sylvester. For a band that has gained acclaim for being extremely DIY for self-producing their previous albums and self- managing, at first glance it could sound like a risk to make a departure from the norm with a different producer. Sylvester excels with excellent quality, and I also can’t get enough of Greg Saunier’s skills on drums. For all of this polish you might be thinking of, don’t fret. There are a good amount of ear- splitting riff rockers on La Isla Bonita as well. It’s November, which means it’s getting cold and one of your friends is already complaining about it. One thing you shouldn’t complain about are the top tracks off of my Album Of The Week. -

Living Labor: Marxism and Performance Studies Joshua Lubin-Levy* and Aliza Shvarts
Women & Performance: a journal of feminist theory, 2016 Vol. 26, Nos. 2–3, 115–121, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/0740770X.2016.1269504 Living Labor: Marxism and Performance Studies Joshua Lubin-Levy* and Aliza Shvarts New York University, New York, N.Y., USA Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks. – Karl Marx, Capital, Vol. 11 To live and to labor are the twinned imperatives to which we are always already given. Together, they animate a rhythm of material production and reproduction that extends over time. This special issue of Women & Performance examines how thinking about life and labor between Marxism and Performance Studies can help us attend to the world at hand. Living Labor began as a conference hosted by the department of Performance Studies at New York University, which took place 11–13 April 2014. It featured over 70 presentations, film screenings, artist presentations, and keynote addresses by Fred Moten and Sianne Ngai. The provocation of this conference was to ask what formal criteria could be articulated between aesthetic analysis and political economy. That is, how does performance analysis bring together the living body and the working body? How do Marxist and Marxist-inspired philosophies articulate and reimagine labor, value, and revo- lutionary struggle, particularly in relation to the social, aesthetic, and political dimensions of performance and performativity? How are theories of difference – which cut across the divisions of race, gender, sexuality, and disability – differently animated by the many his- tories of anti-capitalist critique? The collected essays, short texts, and artworks that com- prise this special issue include versions of the papers presented at the conference as well as new contributions from cultural producers and theorists. -

# 1/08 JAN|FEB KAPU ZINE EDITORIAL Salut! Was passiert ansonsten in der neuen KAPU-Saison? -

Adam Clark Victoria Malawey, Gender & Music The Riot Continues: The Problematic Westernization of Pussy Riot “We’re gonna take over the punk scene for feminists” -Kathleen Hanna Although they share feminist ideals, the Russian art collective Pussy Riot distinguishes themselves from the U.S.-based Riot Grrrl Movement, as exemplified by the band Bikini Kill, because of their location-specific protest work in Moscow. Understanding how Pussy Riot is both similar to and different from Riot Grrrl is important for contextualizing the way we think about diverse, transnational feminisms so that we may develop more inclusive and nuanced ways in conceptualizing these feminisms in the future. While Pussy Riot shares similar ideals championed by Bikini Kill in the Riot Grrrl movement, they have temporal and location-specific activisms and each group has their own ways of protesting injustices against women and achieving their unique goals. -
