06 transfer // 2011 II MartÍ PEraN & GErarD VIlar Art and Aesthetics A conversation on Catalan aesthetic thought The history of aesthetic thought is one of the most glaring gaps in Catalan historiography. The fact that there is no strong tradition in this field makes things even harder. However, although our contribution clearly derives from other contexts, this does not stop one getting an idea of the kind of literature that has accompanied modern and contemporary artistic output. A great deal of data needs to be weighed in pursuing the subject. The following conversation is simply an informal way of raising various themes, which may be explored or altered later on. ➔ Martí Peran: Gerard, I suggest we conduct this interview-cum-conversation in a very informal way, without following any kind of order so that themes can be discussed as they crop up. With this in mind, before mentioning names and local traditions, perhaps it would be worth commenting on where aesthetic reflection is currently to be found. I believe that in addition to conventional essays (published books, etc.), contemporary aesthetic thought is waxing in fields such as artistic and literary criticism and indeed in all literatures. Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). The author Arthur Terry was born in York on February 17th, 1927. After studying French and Spanish at Cambridge, he spent a year in Barcelona and then took up an Assistant Lectureship in Spanish at the Queen's University of Belfast in 1950. He remained there until 1972, ascending by slow degrees to the Chair of Spanish, which he held from 1963. In his last ten years there, he was a member of a writing group which included Philip Hobsbaum, Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley, for which he produced his first serious translations of Spanish and Catalan poetry. In 1973, he went to the University of Essex as Professor of Literature, a post he held until his retirement in 1993. Since then, he has been Visiting Professor at the Universities of Nottingham and London (Queen Mary and Westfield College), and is now an Emeritus Professor. -

PARAL.LELISMES I DIVERGÈNCIES De noucentisme a NOVECENTISMO A l’inici del segle xx existeixen dintre del panorama cultural espanyol dues tendències que tenen el mateix nom en castellà i en català; em refereixo res- pectivament al novecentismo i al noucentisme. L’origen de la paraula és clara- ment català; tothom accepta que el primer a emprar-la va ser Eugeni d’Ors, re- ferint-se a la «generació noucentista» i al corrent estètic del «nou-cents» (és a dir, de l’època iniciada amb l’any 1901) en les seves gloses publicades a La Veu de Catalunya a partir de 1906. Després de quedar establerta aquesta designa- ció, D’Ors defineix i desenvolupa el concepte mitjançant el seu Glosari, i es converteix en el principal ideòleg del moviment. Més endavant el terme és uti- litzat en tots els àmbits de la cultura catalana, i la seva divulgació és tan consi- derable que els crítics l’accepten, els escriptors i artistes fins i tot exigeixen per a les seves obres el qualificatiu de «noucentistes». Explaining Variation in the Salience of Catalan Nationalism across the Spain/France Border Laia Balcells i Ventura Yale University (June 2009) 1. Introduction In 1659, the kingdoms of France and Spain signed a peace treaty by which a part of the Spanish territory inhabited by ethnic Catalans became part of France (the Treaty of Pyrenees). Since then, Catalan identity persisted on both sides of the France-Spain border. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this identity was politicised and was converted into the basis of a nationalist movement that aimed at the political sovereignty of the Catalan nation; in other words, a national identity was created. However, neither in its origins nor today is the salience of this Catalan national identity homogeneous across the boundary: while Catalan national identity is politically and socially relevant in Spanish Catalonia, it is almost non-existent in French Catalonia. In this paper I analyse the historical evolution of the Catalan identity in these two territories, focusing on the pattern of incorporation of this identity into a political ideology: nationalism. My aim is to use this comparison in order to provide new insights in the large debate about the factors explaining Catalan nationalism, which has involved historians, sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists during decades (e.g. Solé-Tura 1967, Vicen-Vives 1970, Linz 1973, Balcells 1991, Sahlins 1989, Termes 2000, Boix 2002), but where contributions can still be made. This is especially the case given recent theoretical developments in the study of nationalism. The main argument defended in this paper is that the variation in the salience of Catalan national identity in these two regions is explained by the characteristics of the historical processes of spread of mass literacy in France and Spain, namely by the characteristics of the ‘scholastic revolution’ (Darden 2007).
