And what a feast it was! We really need to congratulate Moira, Stefan and the team for consistently producing such a rich and tasty buffet, which always tempts us to eat much more than we should. A special touch was added to the celebration through the accomplished background music provided by Wilfried – well done! We were especially pleased to be able to welcome Sister Françoise Dorothy to our table, whom we hadn’t seen for a very long time. I am sure that every one of our ladies had a wonderful time and it was at least mid-afternoon when we finally managed to tear ourselves away and make our way home, satisfied and happy. At the end of August we were back at the Club to help two amazing ladies, namely Dori Hirschi and Alice Blaser, celebrate their 92nd birthday – what an achievement! Looking at the two of them, one can hardly believe that they can truly have reached this age – congratulations again to both of you! At the same time we could also wish Gret Fässler, who had only just returned from our home country, a “ITALIAN TRADITION” produced in South Africa belated Happy Birthday. Thank you www.gastrofoods.com so much, dear ladies, for the great sandwiches and the elaborate cake you brought for us, they were delicious and much enjoyed! RAFFLE PRIZES Spring is here and it won’t be long before it is time again for our annual Christmas Sale and big Raffle in Jonkershoek. So we would like to appeal to you now: if you have anything you can spare that would be suitable as a raffle prize, for instance a bottle of wine, a household or toiletry item or even a food item for our hampers, please contact Therese Dennler on 082 775 5849 – it would be much appreciated! Privatization of public spaces and its impact on the socio-political and spatial landscapes of the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCCID) A dissertation submitted to the Department of Town and Regional Planning in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Town and Regional Planning BY: AGYEMANG FREDUA 2017 Declaration I declare that this research is my own work and has not been used previously in fulfillment of another degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal or elsewhere. Use of the work of others has been acknowledged in the text. Mchunu Page | i Acknowledgements I thank the Almighty God for making this work a dream come true. Also, my profound gratitude goes to my family, Mr. Kwame Kyeremateng, Madam Abena Dentaa and Eugene Owusu Agyemang for their encouragement and support. Again, my profound gratitude goes to my supervisor, Dr. K. Mchunu who through his constructive criticism saw me through this project. Lastly, I am highly indebted to the staff and management of the City of Cape Town and the Cape Town Central City Improvement Districts and the interviewees for their valued time and assistance. Page | ii Abstract Globalization and its antecedent neoliberalism have brought untold competition amongst global cities. As cities strive to bid for the highest order in terms of maintaining and attracting both local and foreign investments as well as tourists, it is imperative to build socially cohesive, environmentally friendly and economically competitive cities as these attributes have become key essential. However, not every city has the financial means to undertake such obligations so they often resort to the formation of public-private partnerships, a phenomenon often termed as Business Improvement Districts, for the attainment of such goals.
