TSWFL Event Page 2 In October 2017 I took my 81 TR7 to the Tampa Bay Austin Healey Calendar, club’s Safety Harbor all British Car Show, which is about two hours Club Officers, north of us. It was entered into the TR7 & TR8 class. I had participated Treasure’s Report in this show in the past, but never with the TR7, just with the TR4A. This show has Preservation Judging for any car in all classes that are in Club Info Page 3 the show. The requirements for this judging are original paint, interior Member Bits Pages 4- 8 and engine, but the engine can have been rebuilt. Since that is what I have, I checked the box for the judging. The yellow TR7 and the Black Spider on either side of me had also selected the preservation box. The judges disqualified both of their About TSWF Membership cars, because they had been repainted. Of all the classes in the show, my TR7 took the only Trophy for Preservation Judging in the show. Members Bits: Ideal Classic Cars, Venice, FL

Author: Cynthia Mahoney, On Wednesday, March 21st, Dennis & I had our annual visit to Venice with my cousin Judy & her husband, Ken, who are snowbirds from Penn Yan, NY. They had discovered a ‘Classic Car Dealer’ called Ideal Classic Cars on US 41 (2224 S Tamiami Trl) in Venice.

The showroom holds about 50 “used” and/or restored cars for sale from the 50‘s through the 80’s. There are also a few pickup trucks from the 50’s. This is a climate-controlled showroom, not a garage. Great lighting makes the cars sparkle.

No prices are posted on the cars. If you are interested, the sales people at the information desk will provide the asking price for the car in which you are interested. We found only 2 British cars for sale:

1980 Spitfire w/OD, Asking Price $19,983

Many Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs and Thunderbirds were being displayed, plus some Cadillac with trunks the size of a child’s swimming pool!!

Author: Jan Linberg, Naples Depot Car Show March 2018

After not taking part for a couple of years in this show, I decided to participate with my TR6 this year. The show was smaller this time than normal as only 93 display spaces were available. This was due to the fact that AACA was no longer able to use the field adjacent to the Depot Museum property.

I left home at 8 am with the top down wearing an extra jacket and sweater against the fairly cold air. At the show the boy scouts were running around and showing the cars to their parking spaces. It worked very well.

After a quick last polish, I walked around to take some pictures before the crowds were to arrive, hence, the lack of visitors in several of my shots. By mid-day the show was fairly busy, but there were definitely less visitors than the previous years.

Apart from my TR6, there were only a few British sports cars in the show; a Sunbeam Tiger and three E-Types. Also, there were a few Rolls Royce’s and two Bentleys. Within the British cars two immaculate cars won prizes, a Sunbeam Tiger and a V12 E-Type.

www.tswfl.org Triumphs Live On 8

The Depot Show is always fairly American-dominated. My favorite car was an orange-red 1930 Cord L-29 that in the end won both its own class and the Popular Vote.

The Sixth Annual B.I.G. European Sports and Collector Car Show (British, Italian & German)

Author: Dennis McKinley, On Sunday morning, March 4th, Cynthia, Chris Thela and I left at 7:00 a.m.in our three vehicles full of Car Show items for Jaycee Park in Cape Coral, Florida. We were met at the park by the show volunteers that were setting up the show car entry points to the display field. They were also placing the class markers for each class within the British, Italian and German display areas.

The show was held in the south end of the park where shade trees protected us from the hot sun. Some of the cars were positioned along walking paths for spectator viewing. At the same time the St. Andrew’s Boy Scout Troop 34, who provide food for the show, were setting up their cooking area and making coffee for the early volunteers.

Boy Scouts saving us from thirst & starvation throughout the day

Show Comments from Various Clubs British Car Club The B.I.G. Car Show on March 4, 2018 seems to have been very successful. Having been involved with the British group, which was the largest in attendance, I heard no complaints from anyone. The British group was parked in the location with the most shade, which was good on the warm sunny day that we had.

Bill Newman BCCSWF President ------Alfa Romeo Club The B.I.G. Car Show certainly lived up to expectations this year as evidenced by the number of participants being more than 100 entries. In stark contrast to last year, the weather could not have been better being bright and sunny but without the excessive wind like last year. The public crowd was substantial with hundreds of families and children and also a number of pet visitors as well. Refreshments were available from the local Boy Scouts. They were busy all day.

The Italian entries, while less numerous than the British and German contingent were well represented. There were entries from all of the top four Italian manufacturers, Alfa Romeo, , Fiat and Maserati and spanned the years from the mid-60s to the current year models. The five judged classes were Alfa Romeo open cars and Alfa Romeo closed cars, Ferrari, Maserati, and other Italian cars this year represented by Fiat. Also present were examples of the newest Alfa Romeos from the local dealer.

Buddy Guynn Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Southwest Florida

I do want to thank you for your planning and dedication to furthering the interest in European sports cars. BIG is becoming one of the most notable car shows in the area. It has been an honor and pleasure to be involved as a representative for Alfa Romeo and the other fine Italian cars. All the best,

Bob Lombardo / President Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Southwest Florida ------BMW Car Club The Florida Suncoast BMW CCA is proud to be a supporter and participant of the B.I.G. Show. The 2018 event again drew over a dozen BMW’s and fielded some 30 top German entries. Thanks to Dennis McKinley’s vision, car club leaders from British, Italian and German brands collaborate to host one of the more fun and upcoming car shows. This year, with perfect weather at the perfect venue made the show that much more enjoyable. For the 2019 show, FSC BMW will be posting the event on the national BMW site to attract more attention and participation

Porsche Car Club Members of the Everglades Region Porsche Club once again enjoyed participating in the well planned British, Italian and German, (B.I.G.), car show. Mother Nature was kind to all the cars and their owners, bringing balmy weather and clear skies. This year, eleven Porsches were entered in the various Porsche categories under the German car class. Entrants included 911s, Caymans, Boxsters, and Front Engine models. Unfortunately, entrants in an earlier class G6, (air-cooled), were unable to attend this years’ event as originally planned. We hope next year they will make it. In addition to the highlight of viewing all of the beautiful cars displayed around the park, the Boy Scouts did a commendable job keeping the participants fed, hydrated and happy by selling burgers, hotdogs, and drinks. It was certainly a tough job for the judges, as all of the cars, regardless of make or class, were worthy of an award.

Author: Dennis McKinley, I was given tickets by one of the Southwest Florida Italian car clubs in March for the 66th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The ticket covered four days from March 14 – 17, 2018.

The actual 12 hour race was to be held on the Saturday, March 17th. I decided to go to the Track on Thursday when the cars were in practice mode before the race. The ticket was marked as Super Ticket, which was thought by the club that gave it to me to include the paddock, bleachers and the pits during the four days. After walking around in the paddock taking pictures I headed for the bleachers to sit out of the sun and to get some shots of the cars that were practicing.

I was stopped at the bottom of the stairs going up to the bleachers by track workers. They informed me that my supper ticket was only good for access to the paddock during the four days. Below are some pictures of cars that I took on my visit to the track on Thursday while I was in the paddock.

Background on the 12 Hour Event and the Sebring Track

This event is an annual motorsport endurance race for sports cars held at Sebring International Raceway. It is the toughest event on the racing calendar, not to mention the oldest continuously running race in the United States.

The Sebring opened its track in 1950 on the site of the former Hendricks Army Airfield World War II air base in Sebring, Florida. It is a road racing course styled after those used in European Grand Prix motor racing. The first race was the Sam Collier 6-Hour Memorial race on New Year's Eve 1950. The next race was held 14 months later as the first 12 Hours of Sebring. The race is famous for it’s "once around the clock" action, starting during the day and finishing at night. From 1953 to 1972 the 12 Hour was a round of the FIA’s premier sports car series which was contested under various names including the World Sportscar Championship and the International Championship for Makes.

The track’s reputation as a car buster comes from the concrete slabs that formed the runways and taxiways of Hendricks Field, a former World War II Air Force bomber base. It would be a walk in the park for a Baja 1000 Trophy Truck, but not for less robust sports cars with only a couple inches of suspension travel.

The current configuration (3.74 miles) of the track keeps its character and charm, even though less than a mile of the original concrete remains. As well, the layout doesn’t diminish the challenges to drivers, cars and crews.

Sebring’s track has been reconfigured several times, most recently by Don Panoz when he owned the facility, which is now part of IMSA Holdings, a NASCAR subsidiary. www.tswfl.org Triumphs Live On 22

1980 Spitfire for sale with overdrive, first $2500 cash Owns It

This 1980 Spitfire is a strong foundation for a restoration project. It comes with original bumpers that have been removed. The Engine runs good during idle, but I have not driven the car. I put synthetic oil and lead additive in the engine along with adding rust flushing coolant. Engine runs at 180 degrees on gauge. The car needs to be gone through to check all the rubber parts that I know have disintegrated. Steering rack feels perfect but boots need to be replaced. All moldings should be replaced.

It comes with the dealer optioned luggage rack, radio, original stripes, owner manual, map reading light, seat belts, storage tray, etc. It has the original 5 steel wheels, 1 original Britain Goodyear used spare , tool kit and tire cover. It comes with the top bows and original top, but needs a new top. It also has the original boot cover for over the folded top.

Doors close straight and glass roll good. Frame has no rust other than expected on unpainted areas like rear spring etc. Car needs new interior, but comes with all seat parts that need foam and rebuilding. I stripped the chevron inserts, which have long since rotted. This was a driving car before being stored in a garage for 15 years.

Hood has dents and looks repainted. There has been some body work done to left rear fender as I can see. Also parking lot dents all around. The tires and rims in the photos were bought in Dec. 2016, but have not had them on the road. The have new rotors/drums and parts but brakes still need bleeding and to be completed.

A car trailer and a couple hours at DMV and somebody will have a nice original project to take on. This Spitfire is located in Fort Myers with a clean Florida title. Contact Mark at 239-240-4368 or e- mail address of [email protected] with any questions or to see the car.
