Research has confirmed that spending time in nature and parks helps prevent and treat anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Studies have shown that: • Time in the park and natural areas reduces the risk of being overweight and obese. • Viewing and spending time in green space such as parks and nature, lowers cortisol levels and blood pressure. • Living in or near green space reduces mortality. • Spending time in nature is linked to decreased anxiety. • Living in a neighborhood with more opportunities for physical activity is associated with lower risks for type 2 diabetes. • Walking in parks improves focus for children with attention deficits. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County (a nationally respected leader in our field for our top-quality services) is now collaborating with Park Rx and local healthcare providers in the Park Rx initiative, connecting providers and patients with our parks and services. The initiative aims to: • Help healthcare professionals prescribe nature to patients during routine delivery of health care. • Change patient behavior through increased time spent outdoors, subsequently preventing or reducing the effects of chronic disease. • Create the next generation of environmental and park stewards through outdoor exploration and experience.
