Will Healy was announced as Austin Peay State University’s 19th head football coach, Dec. 20, before being introduced at a press conference two days later. He replaced Kirby Cannon and immediately became the second youngest coach (30 years old) at the Division I level behind Maine’s Joe Harsymiak (age 29). Healy came to Austin Peay after serving seven seasons as an assistant coach at Chattanooga. The personable young mentor worked under head coach Russ Huesman to help restore the former FCS power Mocs to their previous glory. After arriving in 2009, Healy was part of a staff that led the best turnaround in school history in 2009 (from 1-11 to 6-5) and only improved from that point on. The Mocs won or shared Championships in three consecutive seasons (2013-15), including FCS playoff appearances in 2014 and 2015. In fact, the Mocs finished 9-4 in 2015, including a narrow loss to FCS championship finalist Jacksonville State, with their FCS quarterfinal contest going into overtime. The Chattanooga native served as wide receivers coach, passing-game coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the Mocs. Healy’s work in the passing game helped mold Jacob Huesman into a three-time Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year. In his final season in the Scenic City, with Healy serving as passing game coordinator, Huesman threw for 2,117 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for another 1,244 yards and 13 more scores. As a result, Huesman was chosen STATS FCS Second-Team All-America. Healy’s quarterback development skills appeared early in his Chattanooga tenure. As Mocs’ quarterback coach in 2009 he tutored Tennessee transfer BJ Coleman, who passed for more than 2,300 yards, 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He became a seventh-round selection of the Green Bay Packers in the 2012 draft. After moving to receivers coach in 2010, Healy had equal success. Joel Bradford became an All-American in 2010, posting 81 catches for a school-record 1,284 yards. Tommy Hudson and Clarksville native C.J. Board also earned All-SoCon honors in 2014 under Healy’s tutelage. Along the way, Healy worked with two passing programs ranked in the FCS Top-10 in 2010 (eighth in yards) and 2014 (sixth in passer rating). Healy’s also was responsible for helping transform Chattanooga from a successful team into a well-respected program as recruiting coordinator. With Healy taking the lead in building relationships and the program utilizing Tennesseans for nearly half its roster, Chattanooga had top-rated recruiting classes in 2012-14, including the top-ranked FCS class in 2013 and 2014. He also served as the program’s NFL liaison during his Chattanooga tenure. Healy was introduced to football at a young age. His father Rob was a star at Georgia Tech and his uncle Chip was an All-America linebacker at Vanderbilt. As a prep quarterback star at Chattanooga’s Boyd-Buchanan, Healy earned all-state twice, all-state honorable mention two other years, and was a four-time all-region selection. A Tennessee “Mr. Football” finalist as a senior, Healy holds the Chattanooga area career passing record with more than 7,700 yards. That helped him land initially at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before heading to Richmond (Virginia). Healy was a team captain of Richmond’s 2008 FCS National Title team and saw action in 31 games in his collegiate career. He played in the Spiders’ win over Montana in the 2008 FCS Championship game, which was played at Chattanooga’s . Healy received his bachelor’s degree from Richmond in Rhetoric and Communication Studies in December 2008. He lit- erally went from the playing field to coaching, joining Huesman at Chattanooga as a young assistant in 2009 at Chattanooga. Healy married the former Emily Broyles in July, 2012. The couple has one son, Eli.

GAME 3 REVIEW: AT EIU | 09/24 GAME 4 REVIEW: VS. MURRAY ST. | 10/01 GOVS GO TOE-TO-TOE WITH NO. 16 EIU CHARLESTON, Ill. – Austin Peay State University’s football team showcased its offensive prowess against one of the nation’s top teams, but fell short on the road at No. 16 Eastern Illinois, 56-35, Saturday at O’Brien Field. TURNING POINT After an Austin Peay touchdown with 13:25 left in the fourth quarter that cut the EIU lead down to 35-28, the Govs dialed up a surprise onside kick and came away with the recov- ery. However, on the ensuing extra possession EIU tipped a pass at the line scrimmage and came away with an interception. The Panthers capitalized on the turnover three plays later with a 12-yard TD pass to take a 42-28 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE The Governors racked up 370 yards of offense in the contest, leading to the most points scored in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup since 2012 against Tennessee Tech. EIU entered the game allowing just 25.3 points per game which was 84th in the NCAA and Junior receiver Jared Beard had a career day, nearly breaking the single-game receptions record with 11 grabs for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Beard also became the first Aus- tin Peay player since Devin Stark in 2012 to catch 10 passes in a game. Beard’s 10 catch- es and 176 is an OVC high entering play this weekend. He becomes just the sixth player in APSU history to record over 175 receiving yards in game. For his career, Beard eclipsed the century receiving mark. He has hauled in 80 catches for 1,056 yards as a Gov. Junior return man Kyran Moore had a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown to begin the third quarter. It’s the first for the Govs since Enriques Perry did so against Southeast Missouri in 2013, which was the last game at the old Governors Stadium before renovations were made. It was also the longest play for the Govs since Perry’s 99 yard return. Moore’s TD was the first score of his career. Moore’s 98-yard return was the second longest play prior to the weekend in OVC play. Moore finished with 167 kick return yards, the highest total by a Gov since Terrence Holt had 189 yards against Murray State in 2010. Redshirt-sophomore linebacker Gunnar Scholato totaled a career-high 18 tackles in the contest, one off the school record held by Johnathan Shuler (vs. SEMO, 2012). Scholato also intercepted his first career pass as a Gov. With EIU driving late in the second quarter, Scholato pick off a pass in the end zone preventing the Panthers from scoring. Junior DeKeivis Perry and freshman Neonta Alexander also had career days with dou- ble-digit tackle totals with 11 and 10, respectively. Timarious Mitchell finished 15-of-22 for 211 yards and two TDs, while Tommy Hays com- pleted three of his six attempts for 43 yards and score. On the ground, Kendall Morris recorded his best game of the season running for 75 yards on 13 carries. Mitchell chipped in an extra 42 yards on nine carries.
