Background Seagrasses (Zostera spp) are marine flowering plants that develop on sands and muds in sheltered intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. Seagrass beds are important marine habitats but are vulnerable to a range of human induced pressures. Their vulnerability and importance to habitat creation and ecological functioning is recognised in their inclusion on the recommended Priority Marine Features list for Scotland’s seas. Prior to this study, there were few confirmed records of Zostera in Orkney waters. This study combined a predictive modelling approach with boat-based surveys to enhance under- standing of seagrass distribution in Orkney and inform conservation management. -

A new species of the subgenus Aspilaturbo Williams, 2008 was found on the remote islands of Saint Brandon (Cargados Cara- jos Islands). This species is described here as new and compared to the similar- looking species Turbo radiatus Gmelin, 1791 and Turbo tuberculosus Quoy & Gaimard, 1834 and to the two other species of the subgenus, Turbo jonathani Dekker, Moolenbeek & Dance, 1992 and Turbo marisrubri Kreipl & Alf, 2001. Manousis and Galinou-Mitsoudi Journal of Biological Research-Thessaloniki 2014, 21:20 http://www.jbiolres.com/content/21/1/20 RESEARCH Open Access New gastropod records for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and one new alien (Emarginula decorata Deshayes, 1863) for the Mediterranean Sea from NW Aegean Sea, Greece Thanasis Manousis1† and Sofia Galinou-Mitsoudi2*† Abstract Background: The NW Aegean Sea has a complex topography, high quality waters, oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions, is connected with estuaries and wetlands, is of high ecological interest, harbours all the types of human activities and yet few researchers work on its marine biodiversity. With this study, the contribution to the knowledge of the Hellenic and Eastern Mediterranean gastropod biodiversity of the studied families is continued, and an expansion of the search in other substrates and deeper waters of the NW Aegean Sea with emphasis on the minor in size species during the period from October 2008 to January 2014. Results: Thirty seven species belonging to seven families (Cerithiopsidae, Fissurellidae, Phasianellidae, Scissurellidae, Siliquariidae, Skeneidae, and Triphoridae) were identified and their biodiversity was compared with the current checklists of marine gastropod molluscs for the Hellenic Seas based on previous surveys. In this collection of gastropods, one species (Emarginula decorata Deshayes, 1863) is a new alien for the Mediterranean Sea, 14 species are new for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and 16 species are new for the Hellenic fauna (with the one above mentioned alien species included). The main identification characteristics and ecological information such as habitat, distribution, alien expansion paths to the NW Aegean Sea and origin of the species are given and discussed. -

After an exhaustive lit- erature review, the available information of two centuries of scientific contributions is summarized. Thus, almost 3,100 valid species are currently recognized as living in the Argentine Sea. Part of this dataset was uploaded to the OBIS database, as a product of the Census of Marine Life-NaGISA project. -
Systematic Position of Basilissopsis and Guttula, and a Discussion of the Phylogeny of the Seguenzioidea (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia)
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 49(1-2): 575-598, 1991 SYSTEMATIC POSITION OF BASILISSOPSIS AND GUTTULA, AND A DISCUSSION OF THE PHYLOGENY OF THE SEGUENZIOIDEA (GASTROPODA: PROSOBRANCHIA) James F. Quinn, Jr. ABSTRACT The systematic position of the genera Basilissopis Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1897, and Guttu/a Schepman, 1908, is discussed; both genera are confirmed to be members of the Seguenzioidea Verrill, 1884. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis of that superfamily, based principally on shell characters, is presented. The analysis suggests that two subfamilies (fam- ilies) may be warranted: the Seguenziinae(idae) S.S., and the Guttulinae(idae) Goryachev, 1987. Three recent, major classifications ofthe Seguenzioidea are examined, with particular attention paid to the explicit or implicit characters on which those classifications were based. Assignment of the Seguenzioidea to the caenogastropod orders Littorinimorpha and Strom- biformes is rejected, Placement of the superfamily, as a suborder, between the Vetigastropoda and Archaeotaenioglossa cannot be confirmed or rejected based on the available data. The pointed tip of the protoconch, presence of sensory micropapillae on cephalic and epipodial tentacles, and presence of a right subocular peduncle are suggested as potential synapomor- phies with the Vetigastropoda. A compromise classification is proposed that would allow use of the taxa Archaeogastropoda and Vetigastropoda until more explicit statements of rela- tionships among the included superfamilies can be made. Recent discoveries of new gastropod taxa from deep-sea hydrothermal vent habitats, as well as re-examination and re-evaluation of previously known deep- sea taxa, have sparked renewed interest in the systematics, relationships, and phylogenies of "archaeogastropod" prosobranchs. In addition to the new animal morphologies, new, more comprehensive data sets and more stringent method- ologies for estimating phylogenies are being used. -

Discovered from Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents in the Southern

A trochoid snail was recovered from 16 low diffuse flow venting sites of both E2 and E9 segments of the ESR. Taxonomic and 17 systematic investigations revealed it to be a species hitherto unknown to science in the 18 skeneid genus Bruceiella, which is apparently endemic to the chemosynthetic 19 ecosystems. The new species is characterised by a large size for the genus (up to 5 mm 20 shell width), a very broad central tooth with moderately raised horizontal basal ridge, 21 and inner marginal teeth with one single prominent protrusion on the shaft, and is 22 described herein as Bruceiella indurata sp. nov. Described members of the genus are 23 known from the Indian and Pacific oceans, drawing interest to the biogeographic origins 24 of the present new species. Closest relative of the present species is Bruceiella wareni 25 Okutani, Hashimoto & Sasaki, 2004 from Kairei vent field, Central Indian Ridge, 26 further indicating the close relationship between East Scotia Ridge and Indian Ocean 27 vent fauna as has been previously suggested.
