Costello, Emblow and White (eds), 2001 e/ongala lullien & Cal vet, 1903 MOLLUSCA gracilis M. Sal's, 1935 malsushi-mana Toriumi, 1951 Compiled by Philippe Bouchet, Jacques Le Renard and mlllabilis Toriumi, 1951 ramosa (Robertson, 1900) Serge Gofas The Mollusca part of ERMS is based on CLEMAM (Checklist of European Marine Molluscs), a database at the website http://www.mnhn.frlbase/malaco.html. The need to compile a check-list of the European marine molluscs was discussed during the 10th International Mal acological Congress (Ti.ibingen, 1989) and a resolution was passed to this effect by the General Assembly of Unitas Malacologica, and Anders Waren (Stockholm) and Philippe Bouchet (Paris) were asked to investigate into its fe asability. The acronym CLEMAM heck 1ist of the guropean MArine Molluscs) was chosen because of its similarity to CLOFNAM and CLOFETA, the very successful regional checklists of Fishes compiled under the umbrella of UNESCO. In 1994, an ad hoc meeting, funded by Unitas Malacologica, brought together in Paris malacologists representing several regional or national lists of marine molluscs: ( i) Riccardo Giannuzzi-Savelli, representing the Catalogo annotato dei molluschi marini del Mediterraneo, compiled by B. Sabelli, R. Giannuzzi-Savelli and D. Bedulli (1992) fo r Societa Italiana di Malacologia, and published by Libreria Naturalistica Bolognese, Bologna. (ii) Elizabeth Platts, representing the Checklist of British Marine Mo llusca, compiled by D. Heppell and S. Smith (1991), and published by the National Museums of Scotland. (iii) Jon-Arne Sneli, representing the Annotated check list of marine molluscs of the No rwegian coast and adjacent waters, compiled by T. Hoisaeter (1986) and published in Sarsia, 71: 73-145. In the fo llowing year, electronic versions of these three lists, in addition to a card catalogue of post- I 960 names, were merged by Serge Gofas into a single list in text fo rmat. The resulting list was then transformed into database fo rmat by Jacques Le Renard, and the first CLEMAM was presented at the 12th International Malacological Congress (Vigo, 1995). Considering the data added since 1995, CLEMAM currently contains ca. 15,000 names and over 3,300 valid species. New literature is permanently scanned for new material. Old literature is also being scanned fo r synonyms and gaps in taxonomical coverage. As of 1999, illustrations of type material of valid species and synonyms are being added to the backbone of taxonomical and nomenclatural information. All native species, benthic or planktonic, and introduced species that have become established are listed in CLEMAM. Old and/or unconfirmed records of non native species are excluded. CLEMAM records published information only and does not make new taxonomical decisions. When different state-of-the-art taxonomical opinions exist in the recent Iitterature, the taxonomic editor records what he thinks best reflects the needs of the users of the database.
