THANK YOU EVERYBODY A big thanks to all who help with the Local News. Folk who send in material, who do the final distribution and help in other ways. This is a classic example of what “Community” is all about : everyone pulling together. And above all many thanks to Des Clarke who, having relinquished the helm as editor, nobly stepped in to help when I was temporally disabled.

Village History For the last few months several of us (Bill Buxton, Dan Mace, Richard Nutt and Bob Pawsey) have been burrowing about trying to understand the history of . In the first place this is for a walk organised by The Village Club on Wednesday, 12th August. The project proved to be so interesting that we have now decided to publish the authoritative guide to our village's history. It starts from the Saxon times when the Benedictine Monks of Glastonbury Abbey owned most of the land right up to the present day; including when Nathaniel Young sold the whole village including all the farm land in 1917 for nearly £30,000. This is a call out for anybody that might have any stories relating to life in the village or any photos or memorabilia hidden away in the odd sock drawer that could be used to illustrate things; if you have please contact me on [email protected]

The Tennis Tournament approaches! This year, Broad Hinton’s much enjoyed annual Tennis Tournament will be held on August Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st. Put it in your diaries now. As usual, everyone 10 and over is welcome to play. Nick and I will determine rankings, based on your last performance or on what you tell us (be careful what you say!), and we will put together pairs where, as far as possible, each pair is of roughly equal ability – not with one another, but with all the other pairs. The price for players will be £8 for adults and £5 for children. Gates open at 10, and play will start prompt at 10.30. The Bacon butties will be served for breakfast, along with coffee and tea, there will be a barbecue lunch and then cream teas in the afternoon; as usual, the bar will be open all day. Spectators always have enormous fun, and are very welcome indeed. If you want to sign up as a player, please ring Sally Cartwright on 731050, or email me at [email protected]. If you are suddenly struck by the thought that your tennis could do with a little improvement, don’t forget the Broad Hinton Tennis Club, and then you can use the Marlborough Lodge tennis court to practice. There’s a £10 annual ‘membership fee’ (£25 for a family of four), and after that it’s just £2 a head each time you play. All the profit goes towards the Village Hall. If you want to do this, just contact Sally as above. The Tennis Tournament is a village instution, and truly is fun for all ages (if the weather is right, then there’s swimming available in the afternoon under parental supervision). Come along and have a good time.

INTERVAL during which refreshments will be served

Suite in 3 Movements York Bowen Petite Suite Debussy Rhapsody in Blue Gershwin

The Cook & Stanley Piano Duet was formed in 1984, shortly after Berendina Cook and Matthew Stanley met whilst studying music at Royal Holloway College, University of London. The following year, they were invited to record the music for a new ballet by John Hine, entitled 'A Christmas Carol', which they arranged specifically for two pianos. They then went on to broadcast diverse musical programmes for BBC Radio 3, including the acclaimed broadcast 'The Four Handed Traveller' . As a result of that success, they were the subject of a programme on Classic FM, during which they talked about their work and played a wide range of music from Schubert to 1920's dance music.

In 1995, the Cook & Stanley Piano Duet were selected by the British Piano Duo Association to represent their country in the 3rd International Piano Duo Competition in Tokyo, where, in January 1996, they went on to win the First Prize, as well as the Kodama Prize and the Ongaku No Tomo Sponsor's Prize - the first British piano duet to have won this prestigious competition.

They have established themselves as one of Britain's leading specialists of the duet partnership, giving concerts throughout Britain and overseas, and have played at venues as varied as the South Bank, Windsor Castle and the Casals Hall in Tokyo. This recital is generously supported by

Drama in Broad Hinton Three performances by BHADS of ‘Allo ‘Allo! from 2-4 July were followed rapidly by The Watermill Theatre’s production of A Little History of the World on 8 July. BHADS welcomed newcomers Karolina Bailey (Helga), David Nichols (General von Schmelling), Jon Candy (German soldier and Hitler’s driver) and Will McLeod (French peasant) in a large cast of 22. Director Alex LaRoche’s clever use of two stages enabled to her to utilise all these actors and keep the action at top pace. Nick Moakes (René), on stage almost throughout, held the production together exceptionally well. Christine Lawrence (Edith, René’s wife) brought the house down with her cabaret turn. There were plenty of other attractive ladies (Alex LaRoche herself, Kate Marshall, Sarah Kromer, Jane Foster, Caroline Fleming, Libby New and Janine Jephson) to keep the attention of every man in the audience, particularly when raincoats parted to show flashes of basques and stocking tops. However, German officers Mark Miller and Paul Thomas and the Gestapo’s Ian Fleming (Herr Flick) managed to draw attention back from the ladies to themselves. Jerry Marshall manfully performed as Captain Bertorelli, an Italian officer, despite having broken a bone in his wrist. Mike Hill (Police Officer Crabtree) brought a voluntary handicap to his part – a dentist had fitted special false teeth as part of his costume but they made it difficult to say lines other than “Good Moaning”. The production was a deserved sell out every night, cramming in all the popular catch phrases from the TV series, and culminating with nine Hitlers and four Goerings on stage! By contrast, The Watermill Theatre performed A Little History of the World with a cast of just three. Ernst Gombrich’s book was first published in 1936, fruit of a hectic six weeks’ work, and promptly banned by Hitler. The play concentrated on Ernst’s growing relationship with Ilse (a piano pupil of his mother’s) and the pressure from Otto, the publisher’s representative, to get his book finished in time. Alasdair Buchan (Gombrich) vividly portrayed the strain of studying by day and then writing by night. Richard Ede (Otto) and Jess Mabel Jones (Ilse – we saw her as Scarlet and Betty in last year’s Hard Boiled) joined Alasdair in portraying an increasingly frenetic atmosphere. How they summon up such energy and deliver their lines with such speed (and humour) is astonishing. This was the most unusual play that The Watermill has brought us since “Gulliver’s Travels” but the audience’s reaction left the cast in no doubt that they had scored a hit. Demand for programmes was such that they were still selling in the interval and members of the audience actually queued to write compliments in The Watermill’s Comments Book. Some people have complained that the visit from The Watermill came too quickly on top of the BHADS Summer production. I will try to avoid that in future and I also noted that a Wednesday doesn’t suit everyone. However, until the Village Hall has paid off its £100,000 loan from the Charity Bank (now below £44,000 and on track to be paid off completely before end 2018), we simply can’t afford to book the more expensive weekend dates from The Watermill. But we do have a Saturday date on 12 December to welcome The Rude Mechanicals, who will present The Dressing Book. This play, set in the late 18th century, follows the social round of Mrs Maybelline Erstwhile, who records which dresses she wears for each event in her “dressing book”, the men she encounters while wearing them, and the disastrous Annual Pantiles Ball in Tunbridge Wells when another lady turns up in the very same gown! This promises to be a very funny evening – please support our initiative in bringing a new touring company to Broad Hinton! John Hutchings

RIDGEWAY LADIES

On Tuesday 7th July, 25 ladies and 1 (brave!) man travelled by coach to visit the gardens at Highgrove. Not at the express invitation of HRH but as a venue for our annual summer outing! Security was very tight; we had to produce identification, leave cameras and phones on the coach and could only enter the grounds at our allotted time, not a minute before. We were escorted around the gardens by our guide Cicely, after a (pre-recorded) welcome by Prince Charles. He bought the house and its very featureless grounds (his words not mine) in 1980. Over the next 20 years he set about transforming the landscape to provide the house with a more appropriate setting whilst adhering to organic and sustainable horticultural principles. The gardens surround the house on two sides in a series of enclosures and then spread out to include wild flower meadows, a kitchen garden and a woodland glade. On entering the first garden, you are struck by how “un-grand” it seems. There are the usual cottagey herbaceous plants and flowering shrubs, roses and masses of delphiniums, every single one staked. How I wished I had been so disciplined! There were several self seeders e.g. foxgloves which had been allowed to stay, so disciplined but undisciplined. Apparently HRH is one for saying “let it be” This was to be a recurring theme. A sinuous grass path lead you through into another area “The Sundial Garden”. This was also enclosed not by walls but a Yew hedge planted by Himself in 1982 to provide privacy but more importantly (to a gardener) shelter. This area has a more formal feel as each flower bed was enclosed by a Box hedge and the Southern side of the Yew hedge was pierced by two very ornate gates found in a reclamation yard and “done up” by local craftsmen. Recycling Royals! From this garden we walked past the front door of Highgrove completely wreathed in a rampant vine. Another example of the mantra “let it be”! I imagine there were a few fingers in the group longing to set to with a pair of secateurs. We then walked through the wild flower meadow which had almost gone over and was waiting for its annual mow which is carried out by two Suffolk Punches. No! not the lawn mowers beloved by those that like stripy lawns but the original horses that pull the mower. This is done in late July. We then found ourselves in the walled kitchen garden. Now this was a place to evoke envy. The layout was formal and every bed was immaculate, the sweet peas were trained up willow arches and every bed was lined with herbs and full of vegetables (it was very reassuring to see evidence of slug damage on the cabbages!) We then entered the woodland area, saw the tree house that Prince George had been playing in the previous weekend with his Grandad and marvelled at the famous Stumpery. Our tour ended in the Islamic Garden which was in total contrast to all of the preceding areas. The idea for this garden came from a Persian rug in one of the rooms in the house and is a horticultural representation of the patterns in the rug. It was entered and won a Silver Gilt medal at Chelsea so you could say it was pretty good! Although the garden is bigger than most it had an intimate feel and was not overtly grand and it certainly felt as though it has one careful, caring owner. Our day ended with a delicious lunch and despite heroic efforts I could not get the Chef to part with the recipe for those scrummy Brownies.

WHITE HORSE GARDEN CLUB On Wednesday 10th July we visited Lydiard Park Walled Garden. This is a rare example of an 18th century walled Garden and was first developed in the 1700’s. Unfortunately, after the early 1700’s the owners had fallen on hard times and by 1740 the gardens had fallen into disrepair and it was only after a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant and a lot of hard work that they were restored and opened to the public in 2007. All the planting represents plants that would have been in a garden pre 1740. Once again but only by a piece of good luck, the redoubtable John Ball was our guide He works in the Garden as a volunteer and his knowledge added considerably to the enjoyment of our tour. The garden looks surprisingly modern and was set out in 6 separate sections with a wide path between the 6 areas. All contained herbs and fruiting trees and are maintained by volunteers. The fruit trees are being trained into goblet shapes with the emphasis on less fruit but of higher quality. There were few roses other than the native dog rose that would have grown in the hedgerows but several of the herbaceous plants were recognizable forerunners of today’s garden plants. Two plants in particular Molinia longifolia and Galega aroused a lot of interest mainly because they were so pretty and relatively late flowering!! Everyone resolved to have them in their garden next year. After our tour of the gardens we planned to visit Lydiard Church. However, when we arrived we noticed that several bees were emerging from a tiny hole in the main church wall, and then the Queen bee emerged followed by a large swarm. We beat a hasty retreat and resolved to visit another day! Our next trip is to Derry Watkins nursery in Cold Ashton on Wednesday 5th August. Please feel free to come along.

CRIB EXHIBITION FOR ADVENT Many of you possess a little crib scene which comes out at Christmas and may well have an interesting tale to tell - where did it originate?, was it a gift from someone special?, is it a family keepsake?...... and so on. We would like to make an exhibition for three days during Advent in the church along with some details about your Crib and some floral decorations suitable for the season. The exhibition will be free entry and the church will be minded during those three days. Refreshments will be available (for a small charge!) If you would like to share your Crib with others please contact Jane O'Neill (731365) or Jenni Moseling (731629) and register your interest. The dates we have chosen are 11, 12 and 13 December 2015 after which you will need your Crib on display in your own homes. We look forward to hearing from you. TEAS FOR TOURISTS IN AVEBURY - AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER We are serving Teas for Tourists in St James , Avebury on the weekends of August 1 & 2 and September 19 & 20. If you are able to help in any way during those two weekends please let Sally Cartwright (731050) or Jenni Moseling (731629) know as soon as you can. We need helpers during the weekends who are prepared to serve teas and wash up and we also need volunteers to make sandwiches or cakes. The money raised goes towards the upkeep of our lovely church which needs lots of TLC as most ladies do on reaching a venerable old age!! Jenni Moseling and Sally Cartwright (CHURCH WARDENS)

Page 24 LOCAL NEWS August 2015 VIEW FROM THE RECTORY Dawn. August 6th 1945. Still, warm, and beautiful. Shimmering leaves, reflecting sunlight from a cloudless sky, made a pleasant contrast with shadows as the people of Hiroshima began a new day. A child looked up at the sound of an aeroplane engine. A sleepy air-raid warden, fresh from duty at a hospital sprawled in his shorts and shirt on a sofa. Suddenly, a strong flash of light - and then another- rend the air. The girl disappeared. The man was left naked and scorched. Through swirling dust those left alive could barely see what remained of their city. Those who survived remember pain, and shock but most of all a terrible thirst. From the embers of the fires that ravaged the city came a flame of hope and peace and forgiveness. Kindled from destruction by a bereaved grandmother, it became a symbol of hope and peace that has travelled all over the world. Some years ago a visiting Japanese Musician brought the flame to Glastonbury, where it lives beneath the Peace Dome, open and accessible by all who yearn and thirst for peace. This flame was welcomed into Avebury by over 100 people on Friday 19th of June – everyone involved behind the scenes and all who attended were deeply moved. The flame remains lit in St James Church and will remain lit for at least a year. Open to all, of all faith and of none, open to all who yearn for peace. If you haven’t visited – please do so. Hundreds of visitors to the events in church over that weekend placed their heart shaped prayers for peace in the life-size tree, beautifully crafted for us by Gordon Rimes. These have been added to in the weeks that followed, and to read them gives hope. It is wonderful that in the face of such violence and aggression between peoples of our planet so many people here yearn for and want to work for peace and pray for peace, in whatever way prayer takes shape and has meaning for them. We so desperately need peace in our world. But where does it begin? In taking that first small step to cross the road towards someone else who also takes a small step to cross a road – then together we walk to where God is leading us. Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill my heart, my world, my universe. Peace Peace Peace

– would you like to be part of the community of the hopeful ones who help keep the flame burning over the year ( or years) to come? If so see page..18

HARVEST SUPPER AND FESTIVAL 2015 - SAVE THE DATES This year Harvest Supper will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 3rd October, 2015. Tickets will be on sale at the Broad Hinton and Uffcott Fete in September and available from Jenni Moseling from the beginning of September. This event is for everyone in the villages not just church members. The food is homemade and plentiful. Ticket prices are VERY reasonable and families get special rates and are very welcome. We all celebrate the results of harvest - not just the ones from the fields and farms around us but also the ones we grow ourselves in our gardens and on allotments. Come along and share in a tasty supper with good company.
