Folk who send in material, who do the final distribution and help in other ways. This is a classic example of what “Community” is all about : everyone pulling together. And above all many thanks to Des Clarke who, having relinquished the helm as editor, nobly stepped in to help when I was temporally disabled. In the first place this is for a walk organised by The Village Club on Wednesday, 12th August. The project proved to be so interesting that we have now decided to publish the authoritative guide to our village's history. It starts from the Saxon times when the Benedictine Monks of Glastonbury Abbey owned most of the land right up to the present day; including when Nathaniel Young sold the whole village including all the farm land in 1917 for nearly £30,000. This is a call out for anybody that might have any stories relating to life in the village or any photos or memorabilia hidden away in the odd sock drawer that could be used to illustrate things; if you have please contact me on [email protected] NOTE THE DATE . BROAD HINTON & UFFCOTT VILLAGE FÊTE Saturday, 5th September, at The Old Vicarage (behind the Church) from Noon Same as last year . but MORE !! This year, Broad Hinton’s much enjoyed annual Tennis Tournament will be held on August Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st. Put it in your diaries now. As usual, everyone 10 and over is welcome to play. Nick and I will determine rankings, based on your last performance or on what you tell us (be careful what you say!), and we will put together pairs where, as far as possible, each pair is of roughly equal ability – not with one another, but with all the other pairs. The price for players will be £8 for adults and £5 for children. Gates open at 10, and play will start prompt at 10.30. The Bacon butties will be served for breakfast, along with coffee and tea, there will be a barbecue lunch and then cream teas in the afternoon; as usual, the bar will be open all day. Spectators always have enormous fun, and are very welcome indeed. If you want to sign up as a player, please ring Sally Cartwright on 731050, or email me at [email protected]. If you are suddenly struck by the thought that your tennis could do with a little improvement, don’t forget the Broad Hinton Tennis Club, and then you can use the Marlborough Lodge tennis court to practice.
