Burton ABSTRACT Founded as a quasi-utopian society by New England evangelists, Oberlin became the central hub of extreme social reform in Ohio’s Western Reserve. Scholars have looked at Oberlin from political and cultural perspectives, but have placed little emphasis on religion. That is to say, although religion is a major highlight of secondary scholarship, few have placed the community appropriately in the dynamic of the East and West social reform movement. Historians have often ignored, or glossed over this important element and how it represented the divergence between traditional orthodoxy in New England and Middle-Atlantic states, and the new religious hybrids found in the West. -
Charles Finney's Sanctification Model in Theological Context
CHARLES FINNEY’S SANCTIFICATION MODEL IN THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT Gerald L. Priest, Ph.D. Charles G. Finney—colorful and controversial nineteenth century “father of modern evangelism.” Most responses to Finney fall into one of two categories—the highly critical and the highly complimentary.1 Unfavorable works usually attack Finney’s unorthodox doctrine and methods; the favorable defend him as a godly soul winner who is misunderstood or unjustly vilified by those who disagree with his “successful” methods.2 My contention is that a critical evaluation of Finney’s own writings will reveal that he is in substantial disagreement with the cardinal doctrines of Christianity, and that his revivalist methodology, when examined in that context, is a defective paradigm for evangelism and revival. I would also suggest that Finney’s teachings and methods have generally been harmful to evangelical Christianity. Fundamentalism was born out of intense opposition to theological liberalism, and so it would appear a mega-contradiction to even suggest that fundamentalists could ever be “taken in” by rationalism in any form. Yet, interestingly, George Marsden has suggested that one of the formative features of early fundamentalism was Scottish Common Sense philosophy, a moralistic rationalism which contributed to the evidentialist epistemology of early fundamentalist apologetics.3 One version of Common Sense, rooted in Princeton, did play a significant role in fundamentalism, as Ernest Sandeen and later Mark Noll sought to prove.4 But Finney’s “new 1Some works sympathetic to Finney include L. Hainesport Community Baptist Church, the church that is the subject of this project, is a small church in southern New Jersey. The project relates specifically to stirring this local church to hunger for revival, but it is hoped that the principles are applicable to any local church and its pastor. Chapter one expresses the longing for revival that springs forth from the need for Hainesport Community Baptist Church to experience revival. The longing that has come to this pastor is a longing that is found in the lives of others in Scripture, in history, and In current times. Chapter one also further explains the goals and objectives of this project, along with the limitations that it entails. Chapter two develops the theology of revival that is foundational for this project. Revival is first of all defined according to scriptural terms, biblical passages, both from the Old and New Testaments, and the definitions of many III writers of revival literature. -
The Early Antislavery Agency System in Pennsylvania, 1833-1837
THE EARLY ANTISLAVERY AGENCY SYSTEM IN PENNSYLVANIA, 1833-1837 By JOHIN L. MYERS* I N THE years before 1830 a strikingly large number of the antislavery leaders of the United States, including Anthony Benezet, Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Rush, James Wilson, George Bourne, John Woolman, and Benjamin Lundy, lived in or near Philadelphia. Pennsylvania's influential Quakers were the first religious sect to repudiate the practice of purchasing and sell- ing slaves, while the nation's first abolition society was organized in the state in 1775.1 The first national organization to espouse the cause of the Negro, the American Convention for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery and Improving the Condition of the African Race, was founded and thereafter convened every one to three years until 1832 in Philadelphia, sustained in large measure by Pennsylvanians. The legislature in 1780 abolished slavery on a gradual plan and with later laws attempted to safeguard the movement of the Negro to a free status. Since all this was true, why was Pennsylvania one of the last of the free states to estab- lish a militart antislavery auxiliary affiliated with the American Anti-Slavery Society, and why did it contribute so little to the organized antislavery movement of the early 1830's? The contributions of Pennsylvanians to the abolition crusade of the nineteenth century were initially modest. Historians still disagree whether the national leadership of the militant anti- slavery movement of the 1830's emanated from the Garrisonians in Boston, the New York merchants, or Westerners, but few Pennsylvanians occupied vital positions. This secondary role is further demonstrated by the existence in the state of only six of the 221 auxiliaries of the national society in May, 1835. -

Roberts Office Hours: Mon. 3-5, Tues. 9-10, Office: 226 Bay State Road, Room 406 and by appointment 617-353-2557 (O); 781-209-0982 (H) [email protected] Course Description: Few concepts have proved more difficult to define than religion, but most students of the subject would agree that religious traditions commonly include rituals and other practices, aesthetic and emotional experiences, and a body of ideas typically expressed as beliefs. This course focuses on those beliefs during the course of American history from the first English colonial settlement to the present and on their interaction with the broader currents of American culture. Theology is the term often used to describe the systematic expression of religious doctrine. It is clearly possible, however, to discuss religious beliefs outside the context of formal theology, and it is at least arguable that some of the most influential beliefs in American history have received their most vivid and forceful expressions beyond the purview of theological discourse. Accordingly, while much of our attention in this course will focus on the works of theologians and clergy--the religious “professionals”--we shall also deal with religious strategies that a widely disparate group of other thinkers (e.g., scientists, artists, and other influential lay people) have deployed in attempting to account for the nature of the cosmos, the structure of the social order, and the dynamics of human experience. Most of the people whom we’ll be studying were committed proponents of Christianity or Judaism, but the course lectures and readings will also occasionally move outside of those traditions to include others. -

ABSTRACT In the mid-nineteenth century a compulsory education system was emerging that allowed all children to attend public schools in northern states. This dissertation investigates school attendance rates among African American children in New York State from 1850–1870 by examining household patterns and educational access for African American school-age children in three communities: Sandy Ground, Syracuse, and Watertown. These communities were selected because of their involvement in the Underground Railroad. I employed a combination of educational and social history methods, qualitative and quantitative. An analysis of federal census reports, state superintendent reports, city directories, area maps, and property records for the years 1820–1870 yielded comparative data on households, African American and European American, in which African American school-age children resided. The nature of schooling and the manner in which the household and community advocated for school attendance during this period are also described and compared. -

Charles Grandison Finney: Lectures on Revivals of Religion (1835) Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875) was the most celebrated revivalist of the Second Great Awakening. Born in Connecticut, he was raised in various frontier towns in central New York, an area known as the "Burned-Over District" for the revivals that had swept through it. In 1821 Finney experienced a soul-wrenching conversion during which God told him "to plead his cause" to others, so he abandoned his legal career and became a celebrated converter of souls in upstate New York and New England. A man of imposing height, forceful appearance, and vibrant rhetoric, he mesmerized the thousands who flocked to hear him preach his appealing theology of conversion and redemption. Although initially ordained as a Presbyterian minister, Finney was not a Calvinist; indeed, he contributed to the breakdown of Calvinism in American religion. He insisted that sin was a voluntary act rather than a foreordained certainty, and therefore people could choose to be saved and elect to embrace a life of holiness. This focus on the individual—a religious belief shared by most middle-class churchgoers—shows how Finney was both a product and representative of the Jacksonian era. So too did his belief in progress. According to Finney, revivalism and reform went hand in hand, and he inspired many people to take up such causes as abolition and temperance. DuBois, Chair Although devoted to insuring universal freedom and human rights for more than 60 years, Henry B. Stanton’s historical legacy and his many contributions to antebellum reform have been obscured and even vilified in the shadows of his famous wife, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and his oftentimes tactical opponent within abolition circles, William Lloyd Garrison. Frequently portrayed as the antagonist in his wife’s struggle for women’s rights, as a husband and a father Henry Stanton has become synonymous in the historical discourse with the very oppression his wife devoted her life to ending. Because of this, Elizabeth’s reformism is frequently depicted as having emerged from an imagined unhappy domestic life, rather than from an awareness of social and political inequalities. Elizabeth’s feminism is thus all too frequently explicitly or implicitly viewed as first a private and then a public rebellion. ii Through extensive primary source research, this dissertation seeks to redefine the pivotal moments in the Cady-Stanton marriage to better understand the many reasons, causes, and inspirations that led to Elizabeth Stanton’s leadership of the Seneca Falls Convention in particular and the woman suffrage movement in general.
