YEAR 7 GUIDE 2019-20 FOR SCHOLARS & FACULTY Nippon Foundation − POGO Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceano- graphy at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Welcome to the Nippon Foundation – POGO Center of Excellence in Observational Oceanography at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, based in the Biological Station Helgoland and in the Wadden Sea Station Germany. MOTTO: “Oceans know no boundaries” MISSION: We will provide world-class education and training courses in the field of observational oceanography. This training is outside world politics and cultural strife. The Nippon Foundation – Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans Center of Excellence (NF−POGO CofE) − is a unique platform which aims to provide world class education and training courses in the field of observational oceanography using the expertise and infrastructure of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Science (AWI) and building on existing POGO expertise and networked with international experts. Scholars are encouraged to be creative, communicative and questioning. Guide for Scholars & Faculty – Year 1, phase II 2018-2019 – NF-POGO Centre of Excellence First Edition − October 2018 Dear Scholars, during your first weeks at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), please contact Dr. Eva Brodte and Dr. Bärbel Wichmann with any questions or worries you might have. It might be helpful for you to know that the AWI has an International Office headed by Andrea Bleyer with a very extensive and informative website under: http://www2.awi.de/de/mitarbeiterbelange/personalentwicklung/international_office/ (This website is accessible from computers / laptops at the AWI, in the internal network) Please remember that all seminars/courses and talks of the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence programme and the BAH talks/Colloquium are strictly mandatory. In case you are ill or have serious reasons for which you cannot take part: Please inform your lecturer and Dr. Bärbel Wichmann or Dr. Eva Brodte. “Thursday Dinners” with the teachers Sometimes when people from different countries meet, they do not stop at learning each others' traditions, but together they find new customs. The first group of NF-POGO scholars invented a tradition of inviting their teachers for dinner. The scholars liked this event because it was an opportunity to get to know their teachers better in a relaxed atmosphere. The teachers were thankful for the chance to get to know the scholars and their traditions better. Most Germans are very interested in other cultures, and all are interested in food ;-). After the great success of those previous evenings, dinners with teachers are now officially included into the course programme. You are kindly asked to choose a Thursday evening once per course, so that everyone can feel at ease. It would be nice when also the teachers contribute to these dinners (by bringing the drinks or dessert/sweets or whatever you plan together). In Germany, a lot of people love to cook and eat together, so it will be also a possibility that scholars and teacher join to prepare the meal together. We hope you will enjoy it as much as the students (and teachers) before you did. … and don’t forget to add some recipes, preferably with pictures, to the POGO Cook Book 2 Guide for Scholars & Faculty – Year 1, phase II 2018-2019 – NF-POGO Centre of Excellence First Edition − October 2018 Index Welcome ................................................................................................................................................ 1 1. Introduction Ocean and shelf seas are pivotal to the future of humankind. Currently the oceans provide roughly 20% of the protein consumed by humans. Emerging countries, with a huge need for ocean resources, will play an increasing role in the near future, defining ocean governance and science. Education founded on a well-managed mix of interests and needs in the field of oceanography and marine science is imperative in order to secure Earth’s future ocean as a sustainable resource. The Nippon Foundation is highly successful in bringing together expertise from all over the world in educational programmes also specialized in marine issues. The Alfred Wegner Institute is Germany’s foremost Polar and Marine Research Institution with an excellent worldwide research and teaching reputation. Both institutions were very interested in developing their mutual expertise and could benefit from the experience of the Nippon Foundation-POGO Center of Excellence (CofE) which worked at Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) from 2008 to 2012. In 2013 we set up a new Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceanography (NF-POGO CofE) at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center of Polar and Marine Research. The NF-POGO CofE at AWI combines multi-disciplinary expertise to broaden international horizons in ocean education, increases the capacity and knowledge required for ocean observation in fragile shelf seas, provides new training programmes in emerging countries highlighting sustainable ocean needs with the help of an international team of experts, builds on the Nippon Foundation-POGO Expert and scholar teams to ensure ocean educational continuum, builds on international collaborations and networks for increased communication of vital ocean issues. 5 Guide for Scholars & Faculty – Year 1, phase II 2018-2019 – NF-POGO Centre of Excellence First Edition − October 2018 2. General information about the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE: The Alfred Wegener Institute carries out internationally renowned research in the high and mid latitude oceans and the Arctic and Antarctic. It runs the highly successful Helmholtz Association research programme on change in polar, marine and coastal systems. The AWI is home to experts in ocean observation, paleo experts, climate experts, marine biologists,
