The Way to the Tree of Life Jewish practice entails fulfilling many laws. Our diet is limited, our days to work are defined, and every aspect of life has governing directives. Is observance of all the laws easy? Is a perfectly righteous life close to our heart and near to our limbs? A righteous life seems to be an impossible goal! However, in the Torah, our great teacher Moshe, Moses, declared that perfect fulfillment of all religious law is very near and easy for each of us. Tuesday November 13th THANKSGIVING FEAST This demo always makes my case for me: delicious, seasonal and elegant never needs to be overwhelming or expensive or worse, heavy and rich. Dreidels. Judah the Maccabee. Judith the Heroine. The Chanukah Menorah. Blue cardboard boxes of all different colored candles. (As a kid did you try to create an interesting pattern each night?) Chocolate Chanukah coins. The song, Maoz Tzur. “I had a little dreidel...” Clay Menorahs made in Hebrew school. Chanukah is made of memories and for memories. Taste the latkas and jam doughnuts. See the candles burn brightly in the Menorah. Hear the singing of the blessings over the Menorah. Touch the letters engraved on the dreidel: nun, gimmel, hay, shin - “A Great Miracle Happened There.” Chanukah is a special time for family, friends and children. Chanukah is a Jewish holiday celebrating the victory of the weak (militarily) over the mighty, the few (in number) over the many. Chanukah is a celebration of the re-dedication of the Holy Temple after it had been defiled - but not destroyed - by the Greeks. For the Greeks did not wish to destroy the Holy Temple nor the Torah; they wished only to defile the mitzvot (commandments). The Greeks attempted to lessen their holiness, their uniqueness, their impact on our Jewish lives. “We too, have wisdom,” they declared. “We, too, have gods. We, too, have holidays. Know that your Temple is like our temples. The wisdom of your Divine Torah is like our man-made wisdom. There is nothing particularly holy about them.” So what do you say to a child who wants a “Chanukah bush,” or who wants a photograph with Santa? What do you do about the pressure of giving Chanukah presents instead of the Jewish custom of giving Chanukah gelt (money). -

Caine: The Liberal Agenda "The Liberal Agenda": Biblical Values and the First Amendment Burton Caine' At a recent conference of the National Jewish Law Students Association, a student expressed surprise and appreciation that one advocating the "liberal" point of view could quote the Bible in support of that position. The implication was that "real" or "knowledgeable" Jews - often mentioned interchangeably with "Orthodox," "pious," or even "observant" Jews, are all on the right. OILY GOODNESS Getting Ready for the Oily Fragrance and Tastes of Chanukah Sfenj (Moroccan Doughnuts) By Michael Solomonov Makes 8 to 10 Ingredients 1 tablespoon dry active yeast 3 tablespoons sugar 4 tablespoons plus 3/4 cup warm water 1 2 /2 cups plus 2 tablespoons flour Zest from 1 orange 1 /2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups canola oil 1 cup honey 1 /2 cup ground pistachios Directions 1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in a medium-sized bowl with the 4 tablespoons of warm water. Let the yeast starter stand for approximately 15 minutes until it is frothy and blooming, so the yeast starter doubles in size. 2. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl, then add the orange zest and salt. Make a small well in the middle of the flour and pour the yeast starter into the well. Incorporate the yeast mixture by making a swirling motion with your fingers in the middle of the well, while slowly streaming in the remaining ¾ cup of warm water. Knead the mixture inside of the bowl with palm of your hands for approximately 15 minutes until the dough is very smooth. Cover with a clean towel and set aside in a warm place to rise until it’s roughly double in size, approximately 1 hour. 3. When the dough has almost finished rising, fill a large pot with the canola oil and heat until it reaches 350ºF on a thermometer. With wet hands, lightly punch down the dough to deflate. Pull off a piece of donut batter that is approximately the size of a small egg.
