President 2010-11 – Julian Risso Newsletter – March 2011 Welcome to you all. Feed back is that February’s Newsletter was well received by Members – which is good to hear – so, if you have anything you wish to contribute, we are more than happy to include it, indeed as we have in this issue. Read on! Don’t forget our other information outlets, namely the Yahoo and the news websites that can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/RCofG & http://www.rotaryclubofgibraltar.org Club News After an awful lot of hard work and many, many committee meetings, the Club Membership has voted to accept the new By-Laws that were presented at the business meeting on 15 March 2011. The new By- Laws, together with any associated Guidelines and the new Constitution that was voted in last year, will soon be available to view on the Yahoo website. An announcement will be made when they are available. While on the subject of Club business, due to Nigel having to leave us later in the year and Jinson accepting the role of President for 2011-12, a new President Elect for the next Rotary year (who will be scheduled to take the Presidency in 2012-13) will be voted on during our next business meeting on 15 March 2011. Nominations from the proposer, with the candidate’s consent, and agreed by a seconder, should be sent to the Club Secretary. Everyone, please make an utmost effort to attend this meeting and cast your vote. You all remember Pam Drew, who left Gibraltar recently to return to the UK. While she is finding a UK Rotary Club to join, she has remained a member of our Club. You may also remember that Pam went to help pack ShelterBoxes after the Haiti earthquake. Typically of Pam, she now wants to help them some more, but this time as an on-site coordinator whenever a disaster strikes. To do this she has to complete, at her own expense, a fitness and basic survival course. We are pleased to report that the Club has decided to help Pam meet some of the costs of this course. Looks as if we’ll have an interesting speaker next time Pam comes to visit us. February’s social evening at La Parrilla was very enjoyable with 22 members and guests attending. A good turn out! Our next dining out evening will be 29 March and at the 55 Club in Main Street. Again all are welcome including partners and as many guests as you wish. A three-course meal for £22. Gordon is organising this event and he will be circulating the menu choices in the next few days, so to reserve your place please contact him on [email protected] or 0044 7802 396 397. Because Easter is late in April this year, April’s social night will be on 19 April. Thinks!! – Is it about time we had a curry? 1 Another fun event this month for Club members and their guests will be a French Themed Quiz Night on 31 March at The Cannon Bar. Tickets will be £10, which includes supper, (I have been reliably informed that it is Coq au Vin – what else!) and there will be a free drink for everybody who turns up wearing something French. Teams will be of between 4 to 6 people. Again numbers are limited to approximately 30 people so hurry and get you places reserved by contacting either Jane or Penny. (If Coq au Vin is not in your diet, say so at the time of booking!) In the pipeline and to whet your appetite – a ‘Murder Mystery’ evening is being organised, probably at the end of May or the beginning of June. Watch this space. As you can see from the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section, we are short of speakers. We have had some very interesting ones lately, especially the Captain of the Port and Mary Chiappe & Sam Benady, so get your thinking caps on, find a speaker and contact Kamlesh. Charity News The Club has recently donated funds to the Dyslexic Society and the Scouts Band. It was also agreed at a Club meeting to donate further funds in conjunction with GBC Open Day Funds to St Bernard’s House so they may complete the installation of air conditioning /heat units in all necessary rooms. Our fund raising committee are organising a Charity Concert at The Covent on 5th May. The theme will be ‘Musical Memories’ – a chance to recapture memorable moments from your life, so there will be something for everyone. Artists will include some well-known local soloists, the Gibraltar National Choir and members of the Royal Gibraltar Regimental Band. The concert commences at 8pm and tickets will cost £20 per head. Because of the size of the Convent ballroom, numbers are limited to 150 people, so to be sure that you will not be disappointed, you can pre-order your tickets now from either Jane or Penny. DO NOT delay in securing your seat(s). Rotary Foundation Heather, our Chairperson for the Foundation Committee has asked me to include the following in this month’s Newsletter. ROTARY FOUNDATION MAKES ROTARY'S WORK POSSIBLE. “The more Rotary is known for its good work, the more good work Rotary will be able to do. A Past Rotary President said, "We believe that the Rotary pin on our lapel sends a message. It says, 'You can rely on me. I am dependable, I am reliable, I give more than I take and I am available'." Because of The Rotary Foundation, people around the world know that they can depend on Rotary in their time of need. It is The Foundation that allows Rotarians to say yes to calls for help, when otherwise they might be forced to say, "There is nothing we can do." As Rotarians, we are here because we believe in Service Above Self. As Rotarians we know that we can have an impact beyond what we could ever hope to have as individuals. One person, no matter how great the talents and resources, is limited. Working alone there is only so much that can be done. 2 When we work together, when we pool our resources with those of 1.2 million other Rotarians around the world - and with the resources of our Rotary Foundation - we can make a difference that will be remembered for generations. It is up to all of us."] Written by Glenn Estess Sr. - RI Foundation Trustee Chairman. I echo this message and commend it to you all. Heather Butler-Rawlinson - Chairman of International/Foundation ‘Munching Around Town’ The following has been gratefully received from Penny, with help from Alf (it is hoped that this will become a regular feature in our Newsletter): I guess we have all been to the Waterfront restaurant at Queensway Quay and most of us know Tim the proprietor. On a whim with a roaring appetite for something “healthy”, Alf and I together with a lady friend were quite impressed. No doubt having seen the glint of ravenous hunger in my face we had hardly made any inroads to our glass of red Barbadillo when the food appeared. We skipped a starter and had the seared lambs liver with roasted garlic and rosemary mash, caramelised balsamic shallots with crispy pancetta (£13.90). To be recommended without doubt, although we all felt we should have ordered a side dish of vegetables of some kind and will remember in future. Having scraped our plates clean – or at least I did – the waiter asked if we were finished!!! Desert menu was extensive and hard to choose from. Both Alf and Joanna had the lemon meringue pie, which they declared hit the spot beautifully. I however in a moment of greed had the bread and butter pudding that is ok but not as tasty as ones own. Will give that a miss next time and stick to something more exciting. Some of you will recall the “Chicago” night dinner we had there a long time ago. I have been nagging Tim to do a repeat evening so we can book for the Club, as it was such fun.
