This liturgical calendar, together with these introductory notes, has been compiled in accordance with the Motu Proprio Rubricarum Instructum issued by Pope B John XXIII on 25th July 1960, the Roman Breviary of 1961 and the Roman Missal of 1962. For the universal calendar that to be found at the beginning of the Roman Breviary and Missal has been used. For the diocesan calendars no such straightforward procedure is possible. The decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites of 26th July 1960 at paragraph (6) required all diocesan calendars to conform with the new rubrics and be approved by that Congregation. The diocesan calendars in use on 1st January 1961 (the date set for the new rubrics to come into force) were substantially those previously in use but with varying adjustments and presumably as yet to re-approved. Indeed those calendars in use immediately prior to that date were by no means identical to those previously approved by the Congregation, since there had been various changes to the rubrics made by Pope Pius XII. Hence it is not a simple matter to ascertain in complete and exact detail the classifications and dates of all diocesan feasts as they were, or should have been, observed at 1st January 1961. -

Catacombs of Rome The Catacombs of Rome (Italian: Catacombe di Roma) are ancient catacombs, underground burial places under Rome, Italy, of which there are at least forty, some discovered only in recent decades. Though most famous for Christian burials, either in separate catacombs or mixed together, people of all the Roman religions are buried in them, beginning in the 2nd century AD,[1] mainly as a response to overcrowding and shortage of land. The Etruscans, like many other European peoples, used to bury their dead in underground chambers. The original Roman custom was cremation, after which the burnt remains were kept in a pot, ash-chest or urn, often in a columbarium. From about the 2nd century AD, inhumation (burial of unburnt remains) became more fashionable, in graves or sarcophagi, often elaborately carved, for those who could afford them. Christians also preferred burial to cremation because of their belief in bodily resurrection at the Second Coming. The Park of the Caffarella and Colli Albani (Rome Metro) are nearby. The Christian catacombs are extremely important for the art history of Early Christian art, as they contain the great majority of examples from before about 400 AD, in fresco and sculpture, as well as gold glass medallions (these, like most bodies, have been removed). The Jewish catacombs are similarly important for the study of Jewish culture at this period. Zur Erklärung der herkömmlichen Kalendernamen. (Nürnberg: Verlag von Gottfr. Löhe, 1868). Introduction. Loehe's Martyrologium of 1868 was not his first attempt at a Lutheran sanctoral calendar. Already in 1859, he had his Haus-, Schul- und Kirchenbuch für Christen des lutherischen Bekenntnisses printed, in which he included a sanctoral calendar which was different in many ways from his later, corrected version. The earlier calendar contained many more names, normally at least two names per day. Major feasts were labelled with their Latin names. But the earlier calendar also had errors. Many dates were marked with a question mark. A comparison of the two calendars shows that in the earlier calendar, Loehe had mistaken Cyprian the Sorcerer (Sept. 26) with Cyprian of Carthage. On the old calendar's April 13th, Hermenegild was a princess. In the new one, he's a prince. In the earlier calendar, Hildegard the Abbess (Sept. 17) was dated in the 300's. In the new one, she is dated 1179. In fact, in the later calendar, I would suppose that half of the dates have been changed. Loehe was conscious of the limitations of his calendar. He realized especially how difficult the selection of names was. His calendar contains the names of many Bavarian saints. This is to be expected, considering the fact that his parish, Neuendettelsau, is located in Bavaria. Loehe gave other reasons for the selection of names in his Martyrologium: "The booklet follows the old calendar names. -

The Church in Rome in the First Century Author(s): Edmundson, George (1849-1930) Publisher: Grand Rapids, MI: Christian Classics Ethereal Library Description: In 1913, George Edmundson gave the University of Oxford©s Bampton Lectures, an annual (now biennial) lecture series that concentrates on Christian theological topics. This book contains the collection of Edmundson©s lectures, all of which concern Christianity©s first two hundred years. The majority of the book©s content addresses the New Testament directly, while a couple of the later lectures concern later early church figures such as Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertul- lian. During his time, Edmundson©s work was largely ignored, as he was a clergyman rather than a New Testament scholar. Not only this, but his conclusions differed vastly from the scholarly consensus of his contemporaries. Today, readers can approach Edmundson©s work as one piece of the ongoing dialogue in literary/historical criticism of the Bible. Prassede, realizzato da Pasquale I (817-824) all’inizio del suo pontificato, conserva uno dei cicli affrescati più importante della città di Roma altomedievale, e che insieme all’architettura e ai mosaici di questa stessa basilica, concorrono a creare un monumento privilegiato per lo studio della produzione artistica di inizio IX secolo. In questa sede proponiamo un primo approccio allo studio di questi affreschi finora poco indagati e una revisione di quanto detto fino ad oggi su un altro complesso legato alla figura di Pasquale I, S. Cecilia in Trastevere, e più precisamente sulla decorazione del suo battistero. Questa ricerca fa parte di un progetto più ambizioso in cui si punta ad approfondire la Roma di Pasquale I in occasione del 12º centenario dell’insediamento del pontefice. Prassede, commissioned by Paschal I (817-824) at the beginning of his papacy, houses one of the most important frescoe cycles of early medieval Rome, which, together with the architecture and mosaics of this same basilica, turn it into a privileged monument for the study of the artistic production of the early ninth century.
