Recommendations for a successful SES administration:

Schools with high response rates for surveys in past years engaged in a number of practices that could be helpful to your school as you administer these surveys. The following suggestions are based on these best practices:  Announce the Parent Survey at staff and parent meetings (e.g., ELAC) and write announcements in parent newsletters, bulletins, and on the school webpage.  Include a reminder about the survey when communicating to parents. Send a Connect-Ed message on the day surveys are sent home encouraging them to complete the survey.  Set a date for parents to return the survey to school. Follow up with another Connect-Ed call on the day before they are due reminding them about how important their voices are and urging them to complete and return their surveys.  Have your Parent Center and/or computer lab open for parents who wish to take the survey online during parent conferences.  Ensure that the front office staff is prepared to answer questions about the survey, especially from parents.  Offer incentives to students for returning parent surveys. If parents complete the survey online, they can print the thank you page displayed after they hit the submit button to verify completion.

It is our goal to support you in your effort to increase parent participation. Conversation with the Superintendent

Parents have an opportunity to dialogue directly with our very own Superintendent Cheryl Hildreth twice a semester during “Conversation with the Superintendent” forums. Many thanks to Dr. Ford and team at Mark Twain Middle School for hosting the September 12, 2018 meeting.

Superintendent Hildreth opened the meeting by sharing the LD West Instructional Priorities with over 60 parents. The presentation was followed by a Q&A regarding the potential work stoppage, which parents really appreciated. Engagement opportunities were shared with participants as well as an introduction to and time to speak with LD West directors and staff.

Please invite your parents to attend the next meeting on November 28, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Westchester HS. Thank you to Dr. Janet Mack and team for hosting! SSC Training of Officers

On Tuesday, September 18, three Local District West parents had an opportunity to share their thoughts to the LAUSD Board at the Committee of the Whole.

Local District West Superintendent, Cheryl Hildreth, welcomed and introduced the parents: Ms. Sam Starnes of Overland Avenue Elementary and Emerson Middle School, Ms. Jennifer McKay of Playa del Rey Elementary, and Ms. Jody Podolsky of LACES, Hamilton Senior High, and formerly Hancock Park Elementary.

Our passionate parents shared their experience as LAUSD families. They gave credit where credit is due and offered suggestions for making our district even better. Hats off to Principals of these dynamic parents: Anna Born (Overland), Dimone Watson (Emerson), Valencia Blue (Playa del Rey), Kimberly Lesure (LACES), Brenda Pensamiento (Hamilton), and Ashley Parker (Hancock Park). Choices Fair Thank you to Webster Middle School, Principal Marla Mason (10/6/18) and Baldwin Hills ES, Principal Dr. Letitia Davis (10/20/18) for hosting our LD West Fairs 2018. Over 60 Elementary and Secondary Magnet Schools, Dual Language Programs Schools, and Schools for Advance Studies had an opportunity to showcase the wonderful programs offered at their sites. Nearly 400 parents attended the fairs!

It was a one-stop venue for parents to preview and inquire about the various school programs. Many principals, coordinators, teachers, and students were in attendance; each ready and available to answer questions parents might have.

Webster MS student volunteers greeted parents at both fairs. Palms MS students provided a stellar showcase of violinists during the Baldwin Hills Fair (hats off to Dr. Derek Moriuchi).

District personnel from the Magnet, Dual Language, and Unified Enrollment offices were available to provide support. The Choices On-Time Application window has been extended to November 16, 2018.
