CONTACTS 13 WWW.VISIT.BRUSSELS 1. A BIT OF HISTORY BETWEEN ART AND POLITICS Surrealism is an artistic movement born in the concrete context of the aftermath of the First World War. The war symbolised the failure of two ideals that had marked the societal debate before 1914: internationalism and positivism. Due to the commitment of the various socialist parties to a war of nations, the hope that the international workers’ movement would defeat nationalism evap- orated. The use of scientific knowledge for the purposes of the most atrocious war in history also dispelled the hope that a better world would emerge from the victory of knowledge over obscurantism (enlightenment over darkness, knowledge over superstition). Surrealism was born at the point where these two failures converged. Several Belgian protagonists of the movement joined various revolutionary socialist tendencies that arose in response to the «betrayal of social democracy» (Communists, Trotskyists, Mao- ists). Paul Nougé was one of the founders of the Belgian Communist Party. -

René Magritte by James Thrall Soby
René Magritte by James Thrall Soby Author Museum of Modern Art (New York, N.Y.) Date 1965 Publisher Distributed by Doubleday, Garden City, N.Y. Exhibition URL www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/1898 The Museum of Modern Art's exhibition history— from our founding in 1929 to the present—is available online. It includes exhibition catalogues, primary documents, installation views, and an index of participating artists. MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art 8o pages, 72 illustrations (75 in color) $6.95 RENE MAGRITTE by James Thrall Soby rene magritte, born in Belgium in 1898, has lived in Brussels all his adult life except for a few years in the late 1920s when he joined the surrealist group in Paris. Outwardly his life has been uneventful, but the interior world of imagination revealed in his art has been varied and extraordinarily inventive and has won him a leading place among the fantasists of our time. In this catalogue of The Museum of Modern Art exhibition of the work of Rene Magritte, Mr. Soby traces Magritte's career, describing its enigmatic development and throwing light on the abrupt changes of style, the recurring symbolic motifs, and the audacious spatial relationships. His analysis of individual paint ings—from the first surrealist pictures to his most recent works—reveals the sources of Magritte's imagery and provides new inter pretations for some of his major works. A brief chronology, an extensive bibliography, and a listing of many of his own published writings supplement the text. James Thrall Soby, Chairman of the Collec tion Committee of The Museum of Modern Art and also of its Department of Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions, is the author of many distinguished books on modern artists, among them Giorgio de Chirico, Yves Tanguy, and Balthus. -

On Saturday, April 23, 1927, Rene Magritte's first one-person exhibition opened in Brussels at the elegant, newly redesigned Galerie Le Centaure, located at 62, avenue Louise, one of the city's most fashionable streets.' The show featured forty-nine paintings and twelve papiers colles, all produced since January J926, around the time ,,,then the artist's contract with the gallerist and avant-garde impresario Paul-Gustave Van Hecke had begun: Although the local reviews were genera]]y unfavorable, the exhibition launched Magritte's career as Brussels's leading-in fact only-Surrealist painter, in the months prior to his departure for Paris in September 1927. The body of work iVIagritte created in anticip8tion of his Le Centaure exhibition and during the four months th8t followed was therefore pivotal. It was produced at a crucial moment of artistic self-definition for the artist, poised to move From the periphery of the Surrealist coterie to its center in Paris, in the circle of Andre Breton. To look closely at a series of key works from this foundational moment is to watch the twenty-eight-year-old JVJagritte reinventing himself as a ngurative painter whose evolving Surrealist project was one of severing the links between surfclCe and essence, representation and re<llity. -
