All meetings are open to the public and guests are welcome. Commander’s Report Compatriots, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! It was nice taking a break from the hustle bustle of everyday life to spend some time with family. It was even better to contemplate the real reason we celebrate in the first place: God's gift of Jesus Christ. January will be a busy month for Belo camp. Our Lee-Jackson Supper will be Saturday, January 25th, at 7pm. Location is 3501 N. Jupiter, Richardson, TX, 75082. Tickets are $20. Supper and refreshments will be provided, and as always we welcome our members and guests to bring beverages of their choice. The special guest speaker will be our good buddy, Kirt Barnett. His topic will be The Faith of Lee and Jackson. I'm happy to have this topic and speaker for our Lee-Jackson celebration. It's also wonderful to offer tickets for only 20 dollars apiece, which I consider to be the best bargain in town. Our January meeting will be Thursday, January 2, at 7pm. It will be at La Madeleine. We will discuss the Camp Plan for 2014, the coming advertising plan, and any other business concerns that camp members have. It's a great pleasure serving as your Commander. I look forward to doing it one more time for the 2014 campaign. The foundation is built...now it's time to make sure the people of Dallas know exactly who we are! Recently, at a camp meeting, our Brigade Commander, who was there to present the program (and did a fine job I might add), suggested that someone should do a program on the great revival in the Confederate Army. I think when he said "someone" he meant me. So, I took it to heart and began to prepare. Of course, I already had a copy of our SCV Chaplain's Handbook, and also Chaplains in Gray by Charles F. Pitts. To these I added The Great Revival in the Southern Armies by W. W. Bennett and Christ in the Camp by J. William Jones, which I purchased at our last National reunion. I have just completed reading (they're quite lengthy) and conducting a preliminary study of these books, and can't help but be greatly impressed at the insight and perspective they present on the life of our brave men in Gray. These books contain hundreds of letters and reports describing the hardship, suffering, tenacity, and dedication of the officers and men of our Southern armies. They were mostly submitted by Confederate Chaplains of a number of different denominations who worked together to present the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Confederate chaplains, colporters, and missionaries were in the trenches, they were in the camps, they were on the long hard marches, and they were in the hospitals. They were there and give first-hand accounts of what our Confederate soldiers thought, said, and how they acted. Our Confederate forefathers were heroes all. They not only faced the enemy with brave determination, but their own death as well. Many a time a young soldier lying on the cold ground or crude hospital bed in severe pain, his body mangled by enemy shells, would say to the chaplain, "I am dying. Please write my mother and tell her all is well, and I will meet her in heaven." The Scripture says, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." (Rev. 14:13) We, as the Sons of Confederate Veterans, are charged to emulate their virtues, and perpetrate those ideals which made him glorious. It is our duty, our responsibility, and our honor to do so. So, let us be as faithful to our duty as they. Let us be as dedicated to our ideals as they. Let us be as committed to our Christian faith as they. And, let us be as they . heroes all. Bro. LEE Belo Camp 49 enjoyed another Christmas in the home of Stan Hudson and family following the ice storm of the previous week. It was a time of joy and celebration of a successful year of growth. We enjoyed dining on smoked turkey and dressing, country ham, casseroles, home cooking and wonderful desserts. Our gratitude goes to Dana Hudson and the ladies who made the event so special. Yet under the circumstances this should not be done, for it is due Jackson’s memory, as well as his admirers, that the facts, as far as known, of that part of his life be at least accurately if but briefly narrated. Thomas Jackson Arnold2 __________ Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson is one of the most iconic figures in American history. While most research has understandably focused on the Civil War, his early life in western Virginia, now West Virginia, has been the subject of some fascination. We are drawn to stories about someone who rises from humble circumstances to the pinnacle of success. A consensus narrative about his childhood evolved over time, an “oft told tale,” to be sure, but one that has gaps, errors, and even myths. An excerpt from the historical marker at Westlake Cemetery in Ansted, Fayette County, West Virginia, where Jackson’s mother Julia is buried, is a good example: On November 4, 1830, Julia Jackson married Blake G. Woodson, a man fifteen years her senior, who in 1831 became the court clerk of newly created Fayette County. Mired in poverty despite his position, he resented his stepchildren. When Julia Woodson’s health began to fail in 1831, she sent her children to live with relatives, and Thomas J. Jackson moved to Jackson’s Mill in Lewis County. He returned here once, in autumn 1831, to see his mother shortly before she died.

Glatthaar) The American Civil War destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives and tore asunder the fabric of northern and southern society. In order to understand the long-term consequences of this war, this dissertation examines the way in which death transformed the lives of one group of survivors, Confederate widows. These widows faced staggering emotional consequences because they not only lost a partner and a companion but also a sense of stability in their lives. As widows shouldered the responsibility for their families' survival, a rush of conflicting emotions threatened to overwhelm them. This emotional turmoil encouraged widows to cling to their identities as wives while their social position as widows determined the avenues available to them in the postwar period. No matter how widows felt, Southern communities' cultural prescriptions for grieving shaped the way in which widows expressed their grief. Through letters and ceremonies friends, family, and even strangers comforted widows by demonstrating that their husband had died a good death.

The following discussion largely passes over the general’s already well-analyzed military career, and explores other factors that contributed to his incredible rise in fame to the exalted position of southern hero. Topics include Jackson’s well-documented eccentricities, the manner of his death, the social climate of the post-war South, and his subsequent treatment by early biographers.

    Laura Arnold: Stonewall Jackson’s Unionist Sister Larry Spurgeon (2020)1 “I was a Union woman from the crown of my head to the soles of my feet.”2 Laura Arnold, circa 18653 Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson revealed his inner self to few people. One of them was his beloved younger sister Laura. Orphaned as children, they were extraordinarily close, yet according to lore, became estranged after the Civil War began because Laura supported the Union. Laura was indeed an ardent Unionist, revered and honored by veterans for nursing soldiers in Beverly, Virginia (now West Virginia). Some details about her life after the war can be found in Jackson biographies. Accused by her husband of conduct “unbecoming a prudent and faithful married woman,” with Union officers, a divorce case lingered for years, and she lived four decades in an Ohio sanitarium. Almost nothing has been published in her own words. She has been an enigma. My interest in Laura’s story was piqued by a letter to her from Jackson’s widow, Mary Anna (Anna). Dated September 21, 1864, 16 months after the general’s death, Anna bared her soul, detailing her husband’s last days, and expressing hope of visiting Laura soon. Why would Anna write such a letter late in the war, I wondered, if Thomas and Laura fell out years earlier? There are two possibilities; either Anna did not know of Laura’s Unionism, or, was aware of it, but did not care, in a sense, because of family connection. In either case, why is it assumed the relationship between Thomas and Laura was fractured? Does any direct evidence support it? I wanted to dig deep to understand the family dynamic.

Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, Samuel Cooper, Joseph E. Johnson, Robert E. Lee, James A. Seddon, E. Kirby Smith, Richard Taylor, and William H. Thomas, among other noted figures of the Civil War and the mid- to late-19th century. Correspondence of Varina Davis, Mary Randolph Custis Lee, and Mary Custis Lee, together with some photographs and other pieces of ephemera, can also be found in the collection. PROVENANCE OF THE COLLECTION This collection was begun by Sutton C. Richey (1837-1900). After studying Miami University in 1854 and 1855, Richey worked as a druggist in Oxford, Ohio from 1857 to 1891. Richey also served as treasurer of Miami University (1869-1900) and the Village of Oxford (1874-1900). 2 Admiration for Robert E. Lee as a leader, educator and gentleman inspired Sutton Richey’s son, Samuel W. Richey (1874-1973), to become interested in Jefferson Davis and collect documents relating to his career. An 1894 graduate of Miami University, Samuel Richey worked as a Cincinnati lumber broker. The majority of this collection was donated to Miami University in 1960; other items were acquired more recently as a result of an endowment that provides funds to purchase important items complementing the contents of the original collection.

    JAMES ALEXANDER, aka “JIM LEWIS” Larry Spurgeon1 (2020) ***** “… let us not forget that James Lewis, General Jackson’s faithful body servant, lies in a neglected grave in the Colored Cemetery at Lexington, without a Stone to record his deathless devotion to the General…. He was faithful among the faithless in his devotion to and care of General Jackson’ and deserves a monument at our hands.” Anonymous letter to Lexington Gazette (1875)2 A leading character in the wartime stories about General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson is his “body servant,” a black man known as Jim Lewis. Time has not dimmed his iconic status - he was featured in the book and movie about the Civil War, “Gods and Generals.”3 Though wartime anecdotes about him appeared in books and articles, almost nothing is known about his life. As Jackson’s preeminent biographer, James I. Robertson, Jr., put it, of the “people intimately associated with the general, less is known of this figure than any other person. Lewis was black and a Lexington resident. Beyond that the facts are few and confusing.”4 Some historians concluded he was a freedman,5 but Robertson thought “a good case can be made that Lewis was a slave whom Jackson hired from his owner.” That assumption was based upon entries in Jackson’s wartime account book for payments to William C. Lewis of Lexington, Virginia, for the “hire of Jim.”6 William Cook Lewis (1796-1868), was the Commissioner of the Rockbridge County Court of Chancery, and an elder at Lexington Presbyterian Church, where Jackson was a deacon.7 It was a common practice for slaveowners to “hire out” enslaved people, usually at a monthly rate, paid at the beginning of the year.
