This study examines the extent and the manner of religion’s influence on the war effort and the minds and lives of Confederate generals. Letters, diaries, and memoirs are used in addition to war reports and secondary sources to understand the range and complexity of this topic. Based on the supposition that each person’s religion is a unique relationship between a human being and his or her Creator, this study analyses the uniqueness of the generals’ religious beliefs using biographical details. Religion had a variety of effects on these Southern military leaders. Some high- ranking generals, such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, embraced the virtues of faith, hope and charity as the basis of their religious behaviour. Others such as Jubal Early simply used religion to instill morality and discipline in their soldiers. Confederate generals possessed religious convictions about slavery that enabled them to support or ignore the peculiar institution. Their understanding of Providence gave them confidence in the power of their armies, and in their petitions to God. Many Confederate generals performed their duty not only through a sense of civil obligation but also religious mission. Pious generals led their men and fought the war according to Christian ethics. Many Confederate military leaders died fighting not only for their country, but for their God. Religious beliefs, specifically a belief in absolute Providence, encouraged some generals to be reckless with their lives and to believe death was not the end of their existence, but rather a new beginning. This study examines some of the manifold relationships between religion and warfare in the Civil War South and argues that an understanding of the religious faith and practices of generals needs to be taken into account when writing military history. By integrating and comparing the religion of different Confederate generals this study offers a greater awareness of how religion influenced the conduct of the generals and the Civil War as a whole. ii Keywords: American Civil War; Religion; Southern war effort; Confederate generals; Christianity; Robert E. Studies of various facets of religion, including the role of chaplains, churches, preachers, sermons, and revivals, on both the Northern and Southern home fronts and in their respective armies, exist. Individual generals are the subject of numerous biographies and monographs, in particular, Ulysses Grant, Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and numerous other well-known generals. Other lessor known generals forms the subject of one or more biographies. Seldom, however, have the subjects of religion and Civil War generals been combined. James McPherson and James Cooper believe that “...despite several good studies, the role of religion in the Union and the Confederacy needs more attention.”1 For the South, religion is of key importance because, as Drew Faust states, “The most fundamental source of legitimation for the Confederacy was Christianity.”2 In the case of the common soldiers, several recently published books do much to illuminate their religious beliefs and the role such beliefs played in the Civil War.3 For both Northern and Southern generals, numerous insights are presented in biographies of individual generals.4 However, to date no study of either Union or Confederate generals as a group deals with their religious views and how these beliefs influenced their conception and conduct of the Civil War. 1James M. A.: The Fighting Bishop (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1962). 2 The present work addresses how religion, specifically Christianity, influenced Confederate generals in their understanding of the war, and how their religious beliefs shaped their conduct of the war. I argue that religious motifs, themes and ideals contextualized their conception and conduct of the war, and that an understanding of these motifs, themes and ideals is essential to understanding their motivations and their perception of the outcome of the conflict. In other words, religion matters. It is not a topic that can be aptly dealt with in a chapter or two in a book on the Confederacy, or only discussed when an author is writing a biography of a chaplain. Instead, religious beliefs and practices were central in the lives of Confederate generals, whether they were pious, such as Stonewall Jackson, or impious, such as Jubal Anderson Early. Currently some scholars tend to marginalize religion, and downplay its importance in the past. Lewis O. Saum, a historian of the antebellum United States, writes that “Frequently, modern scholars show secular inclinations, and they show impatience with what they deem unallowable amounts of religious expression. Sometimes, for example, they edit diaries in such a way as to leave the wheat of political or economic content while removing the chaff of religious fancies.”5 The same tendency can be seen in regard to military biographies of Confederate generals. In many, religion seems peripheral to the generals’ concerns. However, by reading the unedited primary sources, a far different picture emerges, one that substantiates my thesis that an understanding of religious motifs, themes and ideals contextualized the generals’ understanding of the war. In essence, they acted as a lens through which the generals viewed the conflict, and this religious lens had a discernible impact on how they waged the war, how they perceived it, and how they reacted to their eventual defeat. This thesis will be demonstrated through an analysis of the most prominent religious themes that were found in the primary and secondary sources on the generals. These themes are faith, hope, charity, morality, slavery, Providence, prayer, duty, leadership, war and death. When I began my research I kept an open mind as to what I would find in the sources. I did not force my own perceived ideas on how to organize this study. These eleven themes were far and away the most important subjects that had religious significance in the writings and the lives of the 5Lewis O. Citing abuses of constitutional law, plans for the abolition of slavery, and a rigged 1860 presidential election, the state of South Carolina had dissolved its bonds with the Union less than two weeks before. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana left by the end of January, seizing a number of Federal arsenals as they went. Northerners were agog at the rapid turn of events. Abraham Lincoln refused to surrender Federal forts in Confederate territory, but their garrisons would starve without fresh provisions. The new president, only 60 days into his first term, sent the steamer Star of the West to resupply Fort Sumter in the Charleston, South Carolina harbor. Charleston’s cannons opened fire on the ship, turning it away at the mouth of the harbor. The brief salvo showed the depth of feeling in the Rebel states. Texas left the Union, even though Texas governor Sam Houston refused to take the secession oath, telling his citizens South Carolina seceded from the Union with that “you may, after a sacrifice of countless millions of treasures and hundreds of thousands great fanfare.     “Such a night is seldom experienced…” James Longstreet and the Retreat from Gettysburg Karlton Smith, Gettysburg NMP After the repulse of Lt. Gen. James Longstreet’s Assault on July 3, 1863, Gen. Robert E. Lee, commanding the Army of Northern Virginia, knew that the only option left for him at Gettysburg was to try to disengage from his lines and return with his army to Virginia. Longstreet, commander of the army’s First Corps and Lee’s chief lieutenant, would play a significant role in this retrograde movement. As a preliminary to the general withdrawal, Longstreet decided to pull his troops back from the forward positions gained during the fighting on July 2. Lt. Col. G. Moxley Sorrel, Longstreet’s adjutant general, delivered the necessary orders to Maj. Gen. Lafayette McLaws, commanding one of Longstreet’s divisions. Sorrel offered to carry the order to Brig. Gen. Evander M. Law, commanding John B. Hood’s division, on McLaws’s right. McLaws raised objections to this order. He felt that his advanced position was important and “had been won after a deadly struggle; that the order was given no doubt because of [George] Pickett’s repulse, but as there was no pursuit there was no necessity of it.” Sorrel interrupted saying: “General, there is no discretion allowed, the order is for you to retire at once.” Gen. James Longstreet, C.S.A. (LOC) As McLaws’s forward line was withdrawing to Warfield and Seminary ridges, the Federal batteries on Little Round Top opened fire, “but by quickening the pace the aim was so disturbed that no damage was done.” McLaws’s line was followed by “clouds of skirmishers” from the Federal Army of the Potomac; however, after reinforcing his own skirmish line they were driven back from the Peach Orchard area.

Pope immigrated to the United States with his parents, Moses and Lena Pope, in 1923 (they celebrated Earl’s third birthday aboard the trans-Atlantic ship). After growing up in Akron, Ohio, where he graduated from Garfield High School in 1939, he attended Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, earning an A.B. in Religion and an M.A. in Theology. He enrolled in Yale University Divinity School, where he was awarded a M.Div. degree in the History of Christianity. In 1948, while at Yale, he met Miriam (Mim) Nilsen, in Cromwell, Connecticut; they were married on September 9, 1950. For the next decade, The Rev. Earl A. Pope, ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, was the minister of churches in Floral Park, NY (1950-53), Cranston, RI (1954-57), and Rumford, RI (1957-60). While serving at the Rumford church, he also served for two years as a teaching fellow at Brown University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Religious Studies and American History. In 1960, Pope joined the Faculty of Lafayette College, where he taught in the Department of Religion for the next 30 years. While rising through the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor and eventually being named (in 1988) the Helen H. P. Manson Professor of Bible, he also served in several administrative positions, including Head of the Religion Department (1977-85) and Dean of Studies (1970-72). Popular and effective as a teacher, Pope taught courses in scripture, world religions, religious history, ecumenism, and interfaith relations.

    STONEWALL JACKSON in FAYETTE COUNTY Larry Spurgeon1 (2019) ***** … the history of Jackson’s boyhood has become “an oft told tale,” so much so that one’s natural inclination is to pass over this period in silence. Yet under the circumstances this should not be done, for it is due Jackson’s memory, as well as his admirers, that the facts, as far as known, of that part of his life be at least accurately if but briefly narrated. Thomas Jackson Arnold2 __________ Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson is one of the most iconic figures in American history. While most research has understandably focused on the Civil War, his early life in western Virginia, now West Virginia, has been the subject of some fascination. We are drawn to stories about someone who rises from humble circumstances to the pinnacle of success. A consensus narrative about his childhood evolved over time, an “oft told tale,” to be sure, but one that has gaps, errors, and even myths. An excerpt from the historical marker at Westlake Cemetery in Ansted, Fayette County, West Virginia, where Jackson’s mother Julia is buried, is a good example: On November 4, 1830, Julia Jackson married Blake G. Woodson, a man fifteen years her senior, who in 1831 became the court clerk of newly created Fayette County. Mired in poverty despite his position, he resented his stepchildren. When Julia Woodson’s health began to fail in 1831, she sent her children to live with relatives, and Thomas J. Jackson moved to Jackson’s Mill in Lewis County. He returned here once, in autumn 1831, to see his mother shortly before she died.
