Select closest city and a list of dates, times, degrees, direction, max altitude and duration should show up. We always select a high elevation, long duration (4 mins?) and try to remember to run outside a minute before the said arrival time and watch in the direction from which it comes, e.g. NNE. About 40 will appear. Here's a good one for Seattle: Sat Jun 26/10:36 PM4mins 8316 above WSW16 above ENE

Rhonda Hargrove Personally, I'd probably be put in a rubber room if I had all their kids...but, they do seem to handle it well and be happy. Jade started watching their

show when it was only 14 kids...so, I've seen a fair bit of them. They are sweet Christian people who are happily married and have a LOT of kids. Today, 19:07:46 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R Barb Chris - Still in Olympia, WA

Jan (Bayonne, NJ) I come from a family of 8, Rhonda, and I'll tell you that when there are a lot of children in the family, something's gotta give - and that usually means quality time alone with a parent, something each individual child needs. Some children can do without that, but not all. The ratio is not good - 2 parents to 19 children. You can do the math. Having money helps a great deal, but it's not the answer. Today, 19:23:22 – Flag – Like – Reply

Barb Please be careful about assuming that everyone feels and reacts the same way you do to children.

I have a cousin with 10 children, 6 of whom are AIDS orphans adopted from Ethiopia. They do very well together as a family, my cousin is an elementary school principal and has always wanted a large family. Obviously not all large families are ideal but neither are plenty of small ones. Today, 19:18:54 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Chris - Still in Olympia, WA Jan (Bayonne, NJ)

Jan (Bayonne, NJ) I agree with you Barb, and I was just stating my opinion. As I said, some children can handle it and some can't. And of course I do have my own axe to grind - no secret there! But I've seen it happen in too many large families and it makes me sad. Today, 19:30:24 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Barb

Lynda C You all have very valid points. It was apparently their choice and as long as the childen are fed properly, have some discipline, are given good values, learn responsibility and are given the most important thing, LOVE it's all that really counts. I know there are teachers and child care givers here who have seen one and two child families that are very dysfunctional and the parents take little responsibility for their kids. I grew up in a family of 5 children, had an alcoholic father who often was out of a job, whose parents often argued (never abusive) and hand-me-downs was the norm. But, somehow we all learned to take responsibility for our own actions, to appreciate what we had and that there was no "free ride" - we learned that we had to work for everything we had Today, 19:47:42 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Jan (Bayonne, NJ) Barb

Big bright moon - now you must understand. We are close to Dulles Airport. We got lights flying in the sky all over the place, so I look near the moon. I locate it!!! I think I saw it. I am thrilled! Of course, since I was in the front yard at least 50 cars drove by and wanted to know why I was staring at the sky with my mouth wide open. Oh well - I saw it. I think. Jan (Bayonne, NJ) There are so many variables to contend with here, Owlo. We've had air quality alerts for the past 3 days - ozone - and that always does funky things to the atmosphere. Also, I live right across from Newark Bay, and there are many container-loading towers there. They have these huge lights all over the place and when a container ship comes into port, they light up the entire western sky. On cloudy nights, the reflected light brightens the entire sky. Hard to see many stars here on any night. Guess I should feel lucky to be able to see the moon! LOL Today, 19:03:32 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Lynda C

So I thought I would check them out. Great... just what I needed to see - so I can have another family or two of owls to watch. I think I like the Tel Aviv cam the best as the quality is good during their daylight hours. Anyway, just thought I would share these with you guys. Hope everyone is well and I can see that some of you have found great ways to keep yourselves entertained or the rest of us in the chat room entertained... Lady Kathleen and Christmas in June! Last night we decided to do one of those fridge cleanings where you take everything out and clean the shelves, then only put back the things you think you might actually eat. I hate to admit it, but yes there was something nasty lurking that was noticeable every time we opened the door. I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that I found things with expiration dates of Feb 2010. Mmmm... JH (Post Pondering) Thanks to some prodding from Bill and cj in fla, I was just playing with the sky calculators over at http://www.heavens-above.com and realized that I may be able to see the ISS tonight at around 9:40 pm local time, at least from my upstairs bedroom window. I have an alarm set and will report back if I am able to witness. I may set up the camera and try for a timed exposure to catch a streak. The big problem I have is tall pine trees, my little hole in the woods severely limits my view unless something is high enough in the sky to see it. I think 40 degrees altitude ought to put it above the treetops, at least momentarily.

Those of you in FL and all along the east coast should have a nice view, provided clouds don't obscure.

JH (Post Pondering) Elliott, thanks for the link to the Benchley essays. That is a wonderful new find for me, and one I am sure to enjoy. I also read the part on How to Understand Music. I had many of the exact same thoughts/comments about literature while in school. Never once was I satisfied that an "expert" could know what an author was thinking while writing. Same holds true for all artistic expression. My favorite passage was the end of that piece (attached below).

Oddly enough, one of my first thoughts upon seeing funny Google translations of some of your French Haiku was the book ' Me Talk Pretty One Day ' from a favorite satirist. David's dysfunctional family lived not far from me, in Raleigh, and he has a huge following around here. His audio books make great travel companions.

It's a lovely little book, about some children who wonder why the storks deserted their village and set about trying to bring them back. The entire village gets involved and they all learn a lot of life lessons (this being a book for children). It's still in print and still in the children's section of public libraries. Jan (Bayonne, NJ) My parents' bookcases alone kept me very busy for years, Molly! Our public library was teeny in the '50s and early '60s, but I was so wrapped-up in Constain's historical novels of England and Kenneth Robert's Revolutionary War novels that I didn't care! Roberts did excellent research for his novels, which of course I didn't really know the first time I read them.

Lynda C Sounds like the French meat pies (Tortiere) that we have here, Mary. Maine has several communities with a large French Canadian population - most families who settled here to work in the big shoe mills and paper mills tht used to be in Maine in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Of course, they brought with them their culture, traditions, festivals and some wonderful recipes. Tortiere is a two-crust) meat pie made with ground pork and beef (sometimes only pork), mashed potato, onion and seasonings, including sage or savory. They also used to use the same filling in a turnover or meat pastie that the workers could take in their dinner pails. I have no French heritage, but have friends that are and one alays gives me a Tortiere, made from an old family recipe, over the Christmas holidays Today, 09:37:44 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Jan (Bayonne, NJ)

I didn't think he would be doing anything in the near future with vacation plans, etc.; but why did he even bother to tell us of all the remodeling and new camera equipment ?? Don't get me wrong, because I think Carlos brought us an experience of a lifetime and I think it was done with honestly and sincerity, never expecting it would "snowball" like it did. I deeply appreciate all that he did and don't think any less of him right now. But, I think the side ventures of books, VCR, cafepress and all the Molly items "snowballed", too, and he has to keep our interest up in order for those things to sell. We are all hoping that eventually Molly and McGee will come back and start a new family that we can watch grow again. it probably won't happen again until early next year but I will always check and be on here until it happens again. Seems I am reading about so many storms in the country, hope you all stay safe. Could use some rain here in California but that is not likely to happen for many months. Heat isn't too bad yet but know it is on the way. Have a great day everyone and I will be checking back in again tonight. Barb Good morning, have my coffee in hand. Storms had petered out by the time they got to us. Good rain for the garden and should be a good day to pull weeds.

James and Bill in SD and other space peeps, in case you read back to the basement when you arrive, here is a short video about moving an Apollo CM from NASA-Glenn to the Great Lakes Science Center. NASA closed their visitors center and it's in process of being set up in the science museum. http://videos.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/2010/06/apollo_command_module_arrives.html

For those not from Cleveland who may visit, like Elliott , here's a link to the museum http://www.glsc.org/

Elliott Good morning, Barb. I am sad to say that I never heard of this institution, in all the years I have been visiting Cleveland! I thought I had seen everything there was to see there. No one ever told me about this Center. I will make sure I take it in on my next trip!

Thank you so much! Today, 06:25:01 – Flag – Like – Reply

Barb Elliott, it is right on the lake front in-between the football stadium and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Steamship Mather used to be East of there, nearer Burke Airport, as it's own museum and was moved and became part of GLSC a few years ago.

Have you ever visited the USS Cod Submarine? It's not open in the winter but it's right next door to Burke. Very easy to see the Cod and then walk next door and see the free exhibits of women in aviation in the airport. There is a wreath ceremony at the Cod on Dec 7 every year but that is the only winter event. The Cod is unique in that it is actually usable. They fire up the engines a couple times a year. It is not modified for anyone w/a handicap--we had a time of it when we first visited and I had a baby along. Not easy to carry her and use those ladders at the same time, also not easy to hand her down to someone. Today, 06:49:11 – Flag – Like – Reply

Elliott No, I haven't visited the submarine. My problem is that most of my trips to Cleveland are in in the morning and out in the evening. And even if I stay overnight, I'm always working a full day, and have dinner with colleagues in the evening. I'm virtually never there on a weekend. So I usually see the Office and Hopkins and the inside of a taxi in between! Today, 07:01:13 – Flag – Like – Reply

Barb Hmm, perhaps you should ask your colleagues to pack a sack lunch for once and go see the Cod. Could easily be done in an hour unless you are like my dad and have to stop and read and learn about every single thing. I won't tell you about when we went as a family way back when to see the King Tut Treasures! My mother and brother waited over an hour after they were finished looking at the exhibit for my dad and I to finish getting through there and my dad thought he was rushed! JH (Post Pondering) Thanks for the links, Barb. Not enough coffee yet for me this morning. My jaw dropped when I read "NASA closed their visitors center..." and I almost cried. Then I realized you were referring to the one in OH. Whew! I took a week long trip with the whole family to Disney a few years ago. I've kicked myself since for not spending part of my week over at Kennedy. I would have enjoyed that so much more than the manufactured world of make believe. It's been 30 years since I was in KSC. Today, 08:03:06 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Barb

Barb I don't think I have been to KSC in about as many years as you. Would LOVE it if they could get a bit rocket to display here.

My understanding is that the new Visitor's Center will be bigger and have more exhibits than the old one. With all the new security issues with NASA and the Airport next door I think the new center will also be much easier for people to visit. It's amazing that the GLSC has already passed the number of visitors that NASA would get in a year at the Glenn site. Today, 08:07:21 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by JH (Post Pondering)

He's super friendly to other cats and loves to play with any visitors, animal or human...even if they don't want to play with him. Gosh, that was fun! We went to an Australian Pub and Barbie for supper. They serve Australian meat pies and I wanted to try one. Chris - Still in Olympia, WA My daughter always wants the last word and if we have a disagreement she starts crying and making it into a thing like it is the end of the world. She has always been strong willed, but now it turns into this huge thing where she thinks she can't do anything right when all I wanted was for her not to talk back. It is very much a battle of the wills with hormones, but she insists that is not it. Both my husband and I see it but she doesn't. Sigh. She still gave me a hug good night, so I guess we survived another one. Yesterday, 22:11:51 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R Kelly Warren Melody

Melody Our neighbors found a baby robin in their drive today still alive. Very young, hardly had any feathers. We hated to just leave it as the mom and dad kept flying around but didn't want to disturb it much either. We got a bucket, put some pine needles in it for bedding and hung it on a branch in the tree. We didn't want to touch the baby so my Finace tipped the bucket over on it's side and used a piece of cardboard to help scoot it in. Not sure if it will make it but we at least wanted to give it a shot. Yesterday, 21:39:08 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R

lynn the rehabilitators usually care for them at their own homes, sometimes they will come and pick up the birds/animals, sometimes you have to take them to their house. I enjoy going, it is so fascinating. There are birds, owls, turkeys, squirrels, inside the shed, outside, in her house, everywhere. If you get a chance, it's fun and very interesting. Yesterday, 21:53:28 – Flag – Like – Reply

Lynda C It probably won't hurt a thing if you pick up the baby put it back in the nest (if you can easily reach the nest). The mother isn't very apt to abandon it just becaue it has been touched by a human. here have been several posts here in recent weeks of people finding a baby bird or a whole nest that has fallen to the ground and picked the bird or nest up and put it back. But, check with a wildlife person if you can't. One problem with a baby bird that small is that it needs the mother's warmth and frequent feeding in order to survive. Barb Polo (orionsstorm) Michelle, you didn't say what breed of puppy you have; so I can't be sure what might be causing the hives. Off the top of my head, short-haired dogs don't have a thick enough coat to hold in the dander from their skin. You could be allergic to his/her dander, or if you just got the dog, there is a chance that the breeder/rescue might have used a flea powder that your sensitive too. Let me know what breed and I would recommend you give the dog a good bath. I just remembered my husband will break out in a type of hive if the dog licks him on the inside of his arms or his neck. He just doesn't let them do that anymore. Yesterday, 21:01:47 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R

Jan (Bayonne, NJ) OK! Thats it! Tonight I am NOT gonna stay here and end up eating breadsticks for dinner! I'm outta here! Yes, I am going. I'm leaving very soon! Goodbye and good night! I'm gonna make me a REAL dinner, with cooking and everything! Set the table, yessir! Here I go - real plate instead of a paper plate! Yeah, and a napkin instead of a paper towel! And my iced tea in a real glass instead of a bottle . . . Kathryn R I wish I could jump into a bathtub full of Calamine lotion!!! The pollen is so bad here that you can see yellow pollen "poofing" out of the trees with wind gusts. I almost wish I had itchy eyes and sneezing this year, these hives are driving me up the wall!!!

OK, back to the regularly scheduled programming... Yesterday, 20:11:01 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Sheriff Web (Adam Curry) Colleen Christina Sigvertsen Podvin Jan (Bayonne, NJ) Rhonda Hargrove britt in southern cal Lynda C

Marla Woody Dillsaver why do you keep getting those hives????? can air borne allergies cause hives, rather than something you eat? My husband got hives when he was on some medication that had sulfa in it. Are you on any meds??? Yesterday, 20:15:16 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R

Kathryn R No, I'm not on any meds except I started taking Benadryl at night to relieve the itching. It's got me befuddled, but allergies are so hard to pin down I don't want to spend a ton of my HRA account to find out they don't know what the cause is. I've researched a lot on chronic hives on the interwebz, and basically it's an allergy to something... and in most cases they can't figure it out and you just relieve the symptoms. Sigh. Rhonda Hargrove I can relate....try oatmeal in your bath...seriously make a "bag" of it in a washcloth and secure with a rubber band. It is extremely soothing to the skin

and very gently. Also, Aveeno lotion is good too (they make a powered oatmeal to put directly in your bath water. Yesterday, 20:16:14 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R Lynda C

Christina Sigvertsen Podvin Yes, Rhonda! I agree. They do have an oatmeal bath. I have bought that for my son that has eczema. Yesterday, 20:19:09 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R

Lynda C They both have soothing properties. It won't "cure" the hives, but it helps relieve the discomfort. I also found a pure aloe gel very soothing when I had a "beastly" bout of shingles. Yesterday, 20:38:32 – Flag – Like – Reply Liked by Kathryn R
