ISSUE 25 9 June 2017

On Sunday 4 June twenty girls and two members of staff successfully completed the Race for Life at Temple Newsam. The weather was perfect and we had lots of support from family and friends. All their hard work training weekly for the last 5 months has paid off. Each student that attended the event was running not only as part of the BBG Team, but also for their own personal reasons for taking part in the Race for Life. A great morning was had by all and preparations are being made ready for next year.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all those that attended to support us on the day and to those that have kindly sponsored our team. We have raised a staggering £2768.50 and the donations are still coming in. Congratulations girls on your hard work and commitment to a great cause. #ThisGirlCan

ISSUE 18 7th April 2017 You will recollect form our Easter edition that we have been nationally recognised for our 2016 outcomes. We were delighted to attend the Educational Outcomes Award Evening on Wednesday with other award winning schools in the North. The event enabled us to network with other high preforming schools and discuss some of the key issues we face in education.

The award that was presented placed BBG in the top 20% of schools nationally for progress. We were excited to share the evening with our Mothership Academy, Rodillian, who achieved an award for finishing in the top 10% for progress and top 20% for attainment nationally. It was lovely to invite Mr Walsh, who has been recently accepted on the prestigious SSAT Leadership Legacy Project, and Mr Bush, back from his current position at John Smeaton Academy, to accept the award

Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of the SSAT led the address and presentation.

. COMPUTER SCIENCE The Year 9 Computer Science Classes have recently undertaken a course in Javascript, a language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers.

The course involved learning the syntax, and then solving problems to gain points. The year as a whole did fantastically well – and many are now in a good position to create an attractive, professional website using HTML, CSS and Javascript.

The students shown in the tables below excelled in this area, and used complex commands and loops to create fantastic code. Their skills in this area will help them in the GCSE Computer Science course the majority of them are about to start.

One notable name missing from the three class list leader boards is Will Nield from 9DWH. There was little point in Will attempting the tasks – as his current skills are already beyond any course on the Khan Academy

. subject news MATHS PUZZLE OF THE MFL MATTERS WEEK Year 10 German Stars.

At the start of the year Mrs Deighton enrolled all the students studying German onto the GCSE course Memrise (an excellent online learning site) and set them a target of completing 1% each week. There are 1477 words in total that they could be tested on in the exams so it was important to make an early start on the learning. Mrs Deighton has been very impressed with their commitment to this so far and is delighted to say that five of the students have already completed the course a year in advance. Congratulations to Marcus Hanson, Nadya Three small equilateral triangles of the same size are cut Longstaff, Orla McAndrew, Georgia Harris and Mia from the corners of a larger equilateral triangle with sides Wilson. I highly recommend watching the TV adaptation, but (as usual) the book is always better and definitely worth adding to a summer reading list. thought for the week

During form time, Key Stage 3 students, Years 7,8 and 9 study and discuss ‘Thought for the Week’. This is a motivational idea which is used to re-enforce the Academy’s Growth Mindset philosophy. Students are being encouraged to work as hard as they can and advised with effort, huge progress can be made. Aside from the thought, students learn about key events that have happened during that week. In addition, students choose from three or four mottos that they are going to try and adhere to during that week.

Discussion Points: What did Albert Einstein mean by the above saying? Have you heard the famous saying ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’? Many people are defeatist, what does this term mean? Some people walk away from problems or new things that they find difficult. Einstein is suggesting that if you keep working at something, you will master it. This is very true, with practice you can get better at things https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQiNDOv-vnY

@BBGAcademy subject news DUKE OF EDINBURGH

I am Harriet, a BBG student in Year 9, and I have recently signed up to do the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. As part of my award I will be writing for the Bulletin each week to let you know what the group have been up to and how we’re getting on.

Matthew Dawson is in Year 9 and is also doing his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. I asked him a few questions about what he is doing for his skill, physical, volunteer and what he is looking forward to and what he feels he will struggle with.

Firstly, I asked him what he had chosen for his skill. “For my skill I am presenting a performance in the last resort to develop my skills in drama, I am looking forward to doing the show but a bit nervous about performing in front of so many people”.

Matthew has recently taken up fencing for his physical and has volunteered to coach Octopush (underwater hockey) to juniors on a Sunday night, which he led to the regional championships in Newport in February leaving with a gold medal. Matthew has become so good at Octopush he now plays for the adult’s team and played a tournament for the C team.

Matthew is looking forward to being able to share his knowledge and skills to others, helping them develop their skills further. His challenges are not knowing how to react to new situations and having people learn off him when potentially he could be doing it wrong. Also, he is looking forward to putting the tents up and camping. He is very experienced as a scout and goes camping very often with his group of scouts. RMAT News

I am delighted to introduce our new page which will share some of the exciting activities happening across the Rodillian Multi Academy Trust in both our sponsored Academies and those we work closely with. More exciting photographs from the Rodillian Multi Academy Trust International Resilience camp this week. Students have had some incredible experiences in Vallon-Pont-D'Arc in France. This week students from Brayton Academy and Rodillian Academy have enjoyed (amongst other adventures) a 36 km paddle down the Ardeche and through the Pont d’Arc. BBG students head out in the first of three weeks camp on Monday 26 June.

We would like to congratulate Lewis Judd in Year 7 on his recent success at a Karting event.

During the racing session Lewis achieved both the fastest practice and fastest qualifying time. He then went on to take 2nd position in the race, missing out on first to his 15 year old rival. Lewis displayed great resilience as he accomplished all this even after sustaining a slight injury following a heavy crash into a barrier during an earlier practice.

We are incredibly proud of Lewis’ success, and he has only just moved up in to the adult kart class for ages 12 to 16. With each training session and racing event Lewis is growing in confidence to better himself within the sport and we look forward to hearing more about his achievements. Well done Lewis.
