Hope at Easter

“Jesus is risen; we are risen” is the message of the season of Easter. The swathes of golden daffodils, the white of blossom are nature’s reminder that, after all the gloom and wet of earlier months, at last there is a new life and a hope for all of us. Death is not the end but a gateway to a new life with God who made us.

Easter is the time we recall the Garden where Mary Magdalene saw the risen Lord but thought he was the gardener. But as soon as he called her by name she knew it was him.

Easter is when we hear of the Upper Room where the frightened disciples were behind locked doors. The Lord enters with the Easter greeting of Peace.

Easter is the time when two disciples are walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, pondering the events of the day just passed. Their eyes are closed as a stranger comes near and they begin to tell him of what has happened. It is time for a meal, they invite the stranger to say the grace. And as they see him break the bread they recognise that these are the hands of the Lord with whom they had shared bread at his last supper. He was known in the breaking of the bread.

Easter gives us hope that as the Lord has risen and as we have been baptised into his death into life with him so at the end of our days we shall be given access to his presence in heaven. He has indeed gone before to prepare a place for us. Easter gives us hope that we shall meet him as we travel along the road as a follower of him who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. At the Eucharist he has told us to break bread and pour wine in remembrance of him.

The Ukrainian church tells the story of Prince Vladimir of Kiev who on becoming a Christian in 988 sent out emissaries to Constantinople to discover the liturgy of his new faith. There they went to the Church of Santa Sophia, the grandest church of the East. 1

After experiencing the chant and the music, the icons – but above all the Presence – the emissaries sent word to the prince:

“We did not know whether we were in heaven or on earth. Never have we seen such beauty. We cannot describe it but this much we can say: there God dwells among mankind.”

May God bless our Eastertide as we praise God for the Lord’s Resurrection. Pray that we may be conscious of our continuing fellowship not only with our friends here on earth but also with all those who have gone before us, all those who have confessed the same faith as we have, who have worshipped like us, who have endeavoured to live through the power of Christ a risen life.

Together we offer the Lord the worship that is his due, together we are aware of his Presence among us.

Henry Stapleton New incumbent

The Installation and Induction of the Rev Liam Beadle by the Bishop of Wakefield will take place at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Honley on Wednesday 15th May at 7.30 pm.

Invitations have been sent to clergy, retired clergy and organisations in the area so that the congregation is truly representative of the deanery and life in the whole of the Parish. Members of the congregations at St Mary’s and St George’s will shortly be asked to indicate if they wish to attend so that we shall have a good idea of how may people we will need to accommodate. The service will not be Eucharistic.

On Wednesday 15th May there will be no 9.30 am Eucharist service at St Mary’s but on Thursday 16th May our new Vicar will say Morning Prayer at 9.00 am and celebrate Holy Communion at 9.30 am on his first full day as Vicar of our Parish.

Please pray for Liam as he prepares for his work here.

Quiet prayer

If you are looking for a quiet corner for prayer in church, there are two places in which you may find helpful. In the prayer corner, as well as praying, you can also write on a slip of paper to fasten to the prayer curtain any special prayer requests that you have. These will be prayed for at the monthly pastoral prayer meeting. In the Lady Chapel, you will find the candle holder and suggestions of prayers you may find helpful if you want to use them. There is no need to pay for the candles. 5 Jane Wardman

Report on the DCC meeting held on 19 February

There were 14 members of St Mary’s DCC present when Chairman Clive Waind opened the February meeting with a prayer. Minutes of the last meeting had been circulated and were accepted with no major matters arising.

Treasurer Clive Green presented the final figures for the General Fund for 2012. In view of a reduced assessment of our Common Fund payments for 2013 plus a reduction resulting from 11 months of interregnum during 2012, Graham Wardman proposed that an item under the heading ‘Ministry’ be placed in the budget for 2013 with a sum allocated for this purpose. It was agreed that this subject be placed on the agenda for the March meeting.

Reports from the Transitional Planning Groups included the following:

 A successful Burns Night Supper organised by the Community and Outreach Group.

 The decision by Finance and Property to apply for grant-aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund for repairs to the tower thereby delaying the work for a further 12 months was awaiting confirmation from our architect, Stuart Beaumont, that this would not lead to any danger resulting from the present condition of the tower.

 For the Worship Planning Group Jane Wardman gave details of a number of special services planned for the year.

 For the Pastoral Care Group Pat Green reported that Open Church would once again take place on Thursday mornings after Easter with a plea for volunteers to steward the openings. The possibility of relocating the Prayer Corner to the Lady Chapel - a quieter area of church - will be examined.

The publicising of the Book of Remembrance was discussed and a number of questions about this subject will await the arrival of the new incumbent.

7

It was agreed that John Dean and Lawrence Jones be licensed as Eucharistic Assistants

Concern was expressed about expensive repairs to the organ and the need to establish a succession of organists if we are to continue to pay to ensure that the instrument will continue to serve into the future.

Other items included: a donation of £700 from Honley Ladies Choir Christmas Concert was reported; no-one had yet come forward to assume responsibility for organising this year’s Christian Aid Week; the DCC confirmed the position of Charles Kaye as governor at Honley Infant and Nursery School.

In view of the late hour a number of items were held over to the next DCC meeting. Cliff Green, DCC Secretary Open Church

The Church will be open on Thursday mornings from 10.00 am to 12 noon, commencing Thursday 4th April. A volunteer is needed each week to act as a steward. There will be a sheet to fill in on the table at the back of Church. Thank you. Carol Hirst

Yorkshire Air Ambulance

As you will read elsewhere in this magazine under the Mothers’ Union report, Mrs. Cynthia Warrington from Pocklington is coming to talk to us on Wednesday, 3rd April at 7.30 pm in the Parish Room.

Cynthia will tell the story of how the idea of the bras we donate to Y.A.A. came about and where it is heading to now, and possibly give us an idea of future plans. It should be an interesting evening, so do come to hear what Cynthia has to say about the Y.A.A. and related possibilities. The meeting is open to everyone, a warm welcome awaits you. BROCKHOLES NEWS Brockholes History Weekend

Over the weekend of 2nd/3rd March there was a real ‘buzz’ in Brockholes.

Villagers and visitors were overwhelmed by the wealth of fascinating historical information, which had been gathered together under the roofs of the Village Hall and St George’s Church. There has been some delightful follow-up press coverage. Everyone involved in the presentations in any way must be congratulated and has earned a very sincere ‘thank you’.

During the event, in church, a DVD of many slides of St George’s played throughout the weekend. In addition there was a quiet background of hymn tunes and visitors all stopped to have a look.

Martin Dove has done a super job bringing photographic prominence to so many parts of the church – inside the building and outside in the churchyard. Martin has kindly agreed to produce copies on request at a cost of £5 per DVD. If you would like one please contact Martin or Kate.

Brockholes Village Trust, Brockholes School, Brockholes Methodist Church and St.George’s Church (150th Anniversary) A D

On a bitterly cold night perhaps it was not surprising that only 12 young people braved the elements to come up to church for the March AD meeting. Those who came had a fun night based on Red Nose Day – icing biscuits with red cherries on top; identifying various smells whilst blindfold; completing a collage of red noses. On a more serious side there was thought and discussion about the plight of many people around the world. The next meeting is Thursday 18th April 6.30pm in church. A D Leaders 10

Over the weekend of 18 - 19 May there will be a Flower Festival in St George’s Church, Brockholes. This is being held as part of the celebrations for the Church’s 150th Anniversary.

The overall theme is ‘Heaven Scent’ and the floral displays will represent the Seasons and the Rainbow. The church will be divided into 4 areas to show the 4 seasons and 6 windows will be decorated in rainbow colours.

It might be that you would like to sponsor an area or a window – perhaps to mark a special occasion or maybe in memory of someone who has died. Please contact Kate Drake to talk about this further. Tel: 663678 or email [email protected]

News from Brockholes School

As always, at Brockholes J & I School we have many exciting activities which the children are enjoying.

Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to do a 2 day ‘Bikeability’ course where they were learning essential road safety skills for when they are out on their bikes. Even though the weather was very cold, they still enjoyed the course and are proudly wearing their badges.

At school we all enjoyed the Brockholes History Weekend. Children in the ‘Quilting Club’ made an amazing quilt which shows a historical Brockholes. The children are very proud of their work and from the many comments we have received it went down very well. Thank you also to the school choir who sang so beautifully in Church on the Saturday. Many people have commented on how special it was with the ‘Future of Brockholes’ opening the ‘History of Brockholes’.

On World Book Day many children and staff dressed up as their favourite book character. Staff shared some of their favourite books and children were given the opportunity to take part in a special World Book Day Quiz.

On Red Nose Day the staff and children took part in a ‘Talent Show’. The children auditioned for a place in the show to be shown to the school on the day. There were also many comedy acts included from the adults in school.

Our Drama Group are very busy rehearsing their parts for the annual RSC Festival held at Honley High School, this year ‘Romeo and Juliet’ will be performed. Many local schools take part in this fabulous event and the performances are always of a very high quality – a treat for everyone who gets the opportunity to see it.

Years 1 and 2 are going on a visit to the Dewsbury Toy Museum as part of their ‘Toys’ topic. They are also having a Toy Making Day when parents will come into school and help make a variety of toys.

To finish this term all classes are busy preparing for their part in the Easter Church Services. Clare Thomas, Head Teacher 12

OTHER ITEMS The God who answers prayer

This poem was written as an encouragement for when life is difficult.

There is a God who answers prayer Who intercedes before the throne, The Son of God who ever cares, Do not believe you walk alone.

When life seems hard, no answers come He knows the path that you now tread Believe on Him though all seems lost He knows about the tears you shed.

Hold on to Him who is your strength, Although it seems there’s no way through, Though pain and heartache both are near, Who holds the world holds also you.

There is a day when all is clear A day when we all understand That all our lives but marked a way That led us to the Promised Land.

by Megan Carter, Parish Pump Put up some shelves?

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend is famous for the amount of accidents that people have while attempting the first DIY project of the year. It seems that many people struggle with even simple tasks these days, such as putting up shelves and hanging wallpaper or jump-starting the car. A report for the breakdown company GEM Motoring Assist found that more than one fifth of men in the twenties would rather call in their fathers to carry out work on the house, than attempt it on their own. Learn of God's grace and redemption

Watching the film “Les Miserables” is an ideal way to learn of God's grace, redemption and mercy, says the priest-in-charge of St Mary the Virgin, Ewelme, in Oxfordshire, where one of the film's most important scenes was filmed.

The Revd Jonathan Meyer recalls: "It was almost a year ago that I was approached and asked about filming part of Les Miserables in the church at Ewelme. Filming took place on 21st March, when the south porch was transformed into the residence of the Bishop of Digne. The convict Jean Valjean emerges from the door, singing the words 'and now let the story begin'.

“We saw this on a crisp March day, repeated over and over again with numerous cameras, film crews, lights, gantries and a churchyard full of sound technicians. On screen we saw the contorted face of Valjean rushing forward and the camera showing us our church digitised on to a promontory in Provence.

"Most important to me was that this is the nub of the film. The Bishop's act of kindness, like the grace of God, is poured out in such a way that Valjean's life is transformed and transforms others.” Parish Pump Flesh and blood

What if the Church saw blood and organ donation as part of its giving? The churches of several mainline denominations have come together in their commitment to an innovative two-year campaign mobilising church members to help increase the number of blood and organ donors in the UK and to see this as an aspect of their personal giving.

It is hoped that by people's involvement, churches can make a significant impact on many lives and also support the NHS in caring for our communities. Further information can be found at www.fleshandblood.org Parish Pump 15
